At worst, I'm sure I could sell it for £100-odd as a complete unit with airbag to some A4 nut...

Any airbags for a 8eo 41909 1bc 73g lying around Ian?

I dont think you'll have airbag issues - As the Ebay listing says, it comes with the airbag wiring loom anyway, so that will probably match your existing loom as you dont have tiptronic on your existing wheel, and even if it doesnt, hooking it will work I'm sure, these things are very interchangeable....

As for the part number, I'm not sure its the right one? - 8E0 is a prefix for A8 D3 components, and all the A8 wheels have small round airbags, so I doubt very much that you have the correct part number there....

99% sure that is the right part number for the wheel- The wheel is stashed in the car at the moment so I can't check, but that was the number I passed to Audi...

Is this a standard Sport airbag? Looks like broadly the right vintage and I do like the silver ring but it looks a subtly different shape?!

carrotchomper 4th August 2009 08:47 AM

It's arrived!

I've got hold of a standard Sport airbag now. Not quite as nice as the one with the metal ring that I missed out on  but seems to have broadly the same loom as the wheel.

Assuming I disconnect the battery and follow the instructions, is this really a DIY job? Am a little concerned about the explosive element! :)

Anyone? Is it easy/safe to do?

CliveH 5th August 2009 09:59 PM

Easy job

Yes, it's very easy - just follow Ian's instructions above, although I used a 10mm splined socket for the big bolt which holds the steering wheel in place.

I would also take the precaution of disconnecting the battery, as Ian suggests.

Thanks! Just need to get myself down to Hellfrauds to pick up a suitable socket/Torx set.

CliveH 6th August 2009 11:35 AM

Tools

Halfords do complete sets of Torx and splined sockets. Not cheap, but good quality. They sell the Torx sockets separately (about £4 each), but I think the splined ones only come in sets, which are about £22. Might be worth shopping around.
