My Volvo has all that stuff, it gently shakes the steering wheel (feels as if driving over a mild rumble strip) and also nudges back into lane.
You have to consciously move the steering with a bit more firmness to cross a line it thinks is a lane marking, unless you are indicating of course when it turns off temporarily. But I'm pretty sure it has electric power steering so probably much easier to implement at a reasonable cost. I've never once tried the park assist, and we've had the car over 6 months! |
Agreed - if you have park assist and ACC you have the right components to change a stalk and re-code to enable active lane assist - but checking back through D4 brochures you could only get park assist/active lance assist from the face-lift onward (long after the A7).
It is definitely a marmite option, I love ACC but have active lane assist. The steering didn't feel natural or direct (probably as it deliberately isn't) and it was disconcerting on the motorway in my eyes. If you are serious about an expensive retrofit I'd suggest you try a car with it installed first and make your own opinion +++ |
Don't you have dynamic steering as well ?... That does make things feel weird.
I've never had an issue with Active lane assist - Have you tried a car with ALA, but not dynamic steering ? |
I do have dynamic steering, that i can adapt to as it changes the steering rate fairly progressively. The lane assist would seemingly get confused by erroneous road markings, often turn off if the white lines were not clear, struggled in roadworks and narrow lanes and as stated above try to keep you in lane even if you wanted to change if you didn't indicate, annoying when returning to an inside lane!
As you know I have had a virtual fleet of A8s, A7s and A6s the last couple of years - lots of variation, I always turned ALA off as soon as I got into a car fitted with it! Including my dad's new Volvo +++ |
I do tend to suffer with undiagnosed narcolepsy so I was hoping it would be as easy as changing the steering column and coding as I have lane assist and acc and all the other toys to go with it. .. not to mention the fact you can (cough cough) adjust the steering input timings on vcds.. ie you can code it to stay on for miles on end without the need for touching the wheel every 10 seconds ... of course this is a driving aid not a form of Audi piloted driving, but certainly must form part of the foundation for it
So bottom line is I can't do it unless I change the steering rack? |

Also given your suggestion of tweaking I'd worry about liability and insurance also! |
All theoretical of course, I'm sadly not the person to do the doing anymore it's far beyond my scope. I just wanted to assess the complexity of the task :)
Thanks for your help.. Is there any quick wins to be had with vcds in the D4? I have enabled green menu and added WiFi along with Bluetooth media and ripping of media ect .. I have yet to update the system but have the sd card and will attempt over the weekend, as I find it odd that the menu in the mmi was missing the online connectivity logo yet had all the functions of it via the info button ie fuel prices and weather and so on. . I also have 2017 maps to install and the last ones I did took nearly 2 hours ! |
Your car was running 770 and recent maps anyway, and had online traffic enabled from memory. It had been updated by a dealer, so no shock they hadn't changed the coding to add new features!
Lot's of small things you can code, boot closure from the remote, change the temperature of the heated wheel, change the default distance on the ACC, needle sweep on start, seat belt chime etc. I have some link's to threads on other forums, not sure if I am allowed to cross post but if any of this is of interest send me a PM for now +++ |
