I've bought a salvaged full linkage and motor anyway, but would be great to refurbish...

If you’re careful, you can do this without removing the bonnet strut. I’ve done it both ways - the time I removed the strut, I knocked the broom handle that was propping the bonnet up and the bonnet fell on my head! Aluminium didn’t seem so light at the time :(
