Yes, the Audi free MOT deal is exactly that, its been running for ages now - Obviously the money they make on a few repairs they find, far outweighs the cost to them of doing a few for nothing. I seem to recall you're not obliged to have any remedial work done by them either, which is a bonus...
Theres a few 'MOT insurance' type schemes around now, and to be honest reading the small print is a joke. Basically, your can has to be fully serviced, and at every service you have to fix everything. Then, providing a non wear and tear item like your chassis is found faulty, they might fix it, up to a rather low pay-out threshold.... Save your money and put it in a 'just in case tin' instead... or buy beer, which is an equally good solution :)
