Looks like a Toyota.

Very nice +++ Presumably not your belated "coming-of-age" celebration Andrew? ;)

This morning that same valet parking area was full of boring, aggressive-looking, fast modern cars with no actual "style". :-(

That's what I find quite humorous. These are sub-10K cars (sometimes sub-5k even), yet a brand new S8 would likely get less attention. I can pull into a car park full of nearly new cars and frequently someone will stop to admire the car, or take photos even. Strange thing is, this has become a much more common occurrence in the last year or so. It's like the D2 S8 has, well, 'come-of-age' :D, gaining people's respect instead of envy.

Afraid so, I've even had to get one of those new-fangled plastic credit-card driving licences that only last 3 years. :tuttut:

Ah, that coming of age. Congratulations! :) I figured you probably didn't mean 18.

I'm still clinging on to my old paper licence too. I guess it's only a matter of time before I'm forced to replace it. :(

Going rather off-topic, but mine was almost 40 years old when it was replaced (we haven't moved house in all that time!); a very tatty original all-green one from the 1970s that replaced a little book!
It really did confuse car hire companies abroad in recent years, they had at best only seen the pink/green paper ones.

It was even more confusing as the old one had a slightly different postcode (due to changes by Royal Mail since it was issued) so didn't match anything for checking. The new one was however updated automagically by DVLA without any input from me.

I remember the all-green ones. Mine's the slightly newer (about 31 years old) pink/green type, complete with a nice hand-written history of my spent speeding offences :D

Afraid I have to renew mine every year because of my bus licence.
But, being a naughty boy, I still have Gwen's green one issued in 1977 endorsement free in replacement of her red book.
I also still have my 1958 issued Army BAOR Licence.

Straying totally off the original topic now I know, but I was just reading with interest about BOAR, or rather 'BFG' (not to be confused with Big Friendly Giant :) ) ...

Firstly, I didn't realise the British armed forced were still so actively present in Germany and, interestingly, it seems that this year is the final year of 'permanent deployment':

Under the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, permanent deployment will end by 2019, although some training will still be undertaken with regards to NATO capability.

Back on topic, this was posted on another Audi forum:

Having driven several new A6's and A8's with the interior gloss black touch screen, I really don't like them. One journey, and it's full of fingerprints which really detract from the appearance its trying to portray. I'd rather hoped the new RS6 would have had a satin or matt finish to try to resolve the fingerprint issue.

My other dislike is the gear lever - I prefer a definite gear lever position. When I want reverse, I like to move it into the R position, and I want to engage park, I 'd like to move it into the P position, not pressing a P button. I don't like it reverting to its default position after each gear selection. Its fiddly to use, in my opinion.

I also hope the engine Start / Stop button is 'in easy reach' - latterly some models need a great stretch to press it...…

Like (#another poster), I prefer knobs to touch screens, a 'proper' speedo and rev counter rather than the digital virtual dash - perhaps the dinosaur coming out of me, but I still have my B8 RS4, and still wouldn't consider changing it for the B9 for very similar reasons (the V8 was a big part as well).

I've always been a great admirer of the C7, and at the moment, will be for the foreseeable future. The C8 has no doubt got a lot of superb attributes, but.....

I was in Bielefeld last week and did my usual tour of my old haunts.
1 Corps HQ used to be in the barracks nearest to town and the second barracks now houses the current HQ Germany.
All the married quarters at the rear of the first barracks are still occupied by UK military. All the facilities in the first barracks including the NAAFI family shop are no more, and the rear part has had new houses built for the local population. Rather strange because where my electrical workshop was is now somebody's garden. The main entrance/guardroom is now a school, again for the locals.
