Hi Brian
Would you mind letting me know the details as my son is 17 early next year and we face the same issue.
I do feel for them. I would have been lost without the freedom of a car at 17-18. I bought my first motor at 14 and spent the next 3 years restoring it ready for me to drive :)
Where we live he is stuck asking us for lift to get anywhere, and I've been told the cheapest car to insure for him is a classic VW Beetle! Now there's a pleasure :p
Cheers

The problem with classic cars for younger drivers these days is that they can only get cover on a 'standard car' basis, as no classic insurer will cover a 17 yr old as the main driver. By going standard policy they'll basically class the car as scrap if it has a prang on age grounds and write it off - they won't do agreed value.

It is worth exploring - my 1st car was a Mk2 Cortina 1300 Deluxe when I was 19 and the car was 24!

When I've looked at this for friends it's quite often the case that larger cars are better value to insure. Worth plugging different cars into something like confused.com as a comparator. Anything young drivers would generally avoid means it ought to be a little cheaper to insure.

It was a company called Quinn direct, dont know much about them and they would only offer TPF&T, also not sure what happens when he passes his test and becomes the main driver without me there, guess they might bump up the premiums at that point, need to do a bit more research methinks

cheers

I'm going to be paying £3,500 or thereabouts on the RS 6 on a 5k mile a year policy as a second car in a good postcode, with tracker and the car securly hidden away behind gates. Currently paying £1,500 on the BMW, comp with legal cover... I may exceed the agreed mileage too so it will go up to £2k. The joys of youff. Took myself off the RS policy and left my dad and it was £400ish.
