Sounds vaguely indecent.

But the good news is that the stealers have crawled all over it and say they are uncertain where the oil is coming from. I dug out my old AA Continental Motoring book which has exploded diagrams of the car and translations into 8 languages [although nothing from the estimate] and it seems that as they aren't really certain, they suspect either a head gasket, or a rocker cover gasket or a seal round an oil pump(?). In any event I am reassured that nothing horrid has happened and can continue as before, dripping gently onto the grass.

Sounds like they basically quoted you to go on an extensive fault finding explore to find the source, hence all the remove and replace rather than just renew ie they just don't know so quoted based on an investigative strip down....

Defo worth doing at much cheaper labour rates!!

My boys in Abingdon will probably take off under skirt, engine cover etc and steam clean everything they can find. Then I'll drive it around for a few days and we shall see what we shall see.....They'll probably do a pre-MOT as well so I can make an informed(?) decision about the next twelve months

The labour rates aren't too bad. €55 per hour here and £55 in Abingdon, but they can only have a main dealer approach, not a more pragmatic one for an elderly car.

Fitzharris Motors. (01235 532551) The older guys(!) left Audi in Kidlington in the mid 90's and so have experience of the older models. They kept our 1989 90Q going for over 200,000 over 15 years. My 8 has been dealt with by them and a local garage in France for over three years.
