I never used one of those foamy things so I cant comment on them.
In my previous car (volvo) I had a blow out in Devon, and it was a real pain poolding at 50mph for 100 miles. Since that time I always carry a full size spare.
I also had a blow out with the same Volvo on the Spanish border (I reversed into the toll gate curb, dont ask). It was such a relief to have a full size spare.
Also with the S8 I had damaged tyre in Lyon (bulging sidewall) and again such a relief to have a full size spare and worry free journey back to the UK.

Well mine was bent when I got the car, I have bought a replacement from a8parts and hope I will never have to use it as it looks so flimsy. I also got a can of repair stuff in car as well just in case


I had a remould winter tyre in summer that decided to demould itself in Germany in hot middle of summer on Passat around 2001-2002 and let the air out so I fitted one of those space saver things that are supposed to be good up to 80kph(50mph). I started off with 120kph(75mph), seemed ok, so I upped to 160kph(100mph), did about 800km(500mi), tyre were smoking at the end and there was no tread left. I was about 12 at the time:)

You went 100mph on one of those skinny spares! :)
Thats very brave, I took one look at the thing and decided to strictly obey the 50mph limit.

Did you see I said I was about 12 at the time??????(just kidding I was 18-19)

But based of previous expierence I would probably not hesitate to do it again.

I would like to fit 4 of them and see what it's like.

I've got something similar in the wheels of my Harley, but having only 2 wheels, I'd sooner throw a tyre away than end up in the scenery, this stuff's meant to seal a hole/ split of up to 1 inch (2.54 cm in modernspeak), never tried it in a car though...

I used mine in a layby, youngest in the back asleep, pishing with rain, spare out the boot with tools, cracked the wheel nuts, jacked up the car, took flat off, picked up the spare offered it on and the bolt holes don't line up :Confused: jacked up a touch more and now i realise that the jack is bending and the car dropping. I battled with it for about half an hour trying to get it to lift but just ended up soaked, cold and extreamly angry, at that point i just wanted the guy who designed it to turn up.

I ordered one from A8 Parts too but when it arrived it too was bent, a quick call and with no problems another was sent out, this one is still in the boot (although bent now because i've used it) along with a steel one i found in the shed from something.

They may well be ok on a workshop floor or similar but i definatly wouldn't be putting anything under the car i wouldn't be happy getting crushed
