If they put the same effort into engineering their cars to be more balanced and not under steer 24/7, they would have overtaken BMW as global number one car brand years ago...

Take a B8 S4 out for a proper spin with a sport diff - When you're gunning it, it feels rear wheel drive and I've even slid the back end out by mistake... :D

It does make every other Audi Ive driven feel a bit numb in comparison.

That B8 of yours is a beauty, Ian. If you think that handles well though, apparently it is nothing on the B7 RS 4. According to Doug at MRC who has both a B8 S4 and B7 RS 4. When are you getting it mapped? Stage two is 480 BHP. +++

I know, but crucially (and a little bit boringly I know) its switchable from a lunacy inducing mad max go kart to a calm motorway cruiser at the touch of a button, and back again :)

The Dynamic steering/diff/ecu/damper control stuff really does work.... Shame it was optional really.

It actually alters the steering ratio which boggles my mind. It must mean it doesnt have a regular rack and pinion under there, so in dynamic mode the steering becomes way more race car like with only small turns needed etc.

I really fancied an RS4, but Fuel economy / theft risk / DRC concerns mean I'm not overly disspointed at the moment that I've gone for 2nd best, as 2nd best aint alf bad :D

I'm a big fan of the B8 S4. It is quicker than the B7 RS 4, more modern. You made the right choice IMO. +++

I'm not sure whether I'd trade those, enjoyable as they were, for my freebie.
Basically a car of my choice for a year..............
First (for practical reasons) an A6 Avant. But then it needed a service after 3 or 4 months.
So I had an A8 4.0 TDi for the next 6 months or more.

I did have to pay for the fuel though. :-(

On the mapping front of the newest audis, be aware I've heard of a rejected warranty claim with Audi for a failed mechanical component. Apparently they now look at torque values applied to the running gear and will reject anything out of hand that's managed (before software removal) to produce more torque than the standard car can develop

Rather a worrying thought when buying a used car if its previously been mapped, but probably only an issue if bought with an Audi warranty rather than an independent one

Singh 19th October 2012 11:01 AM

I don't think Ian's has a warranty, if it did - yeah, I'd think twice.

Adrian E 19th October 2012 12:04 PM

What I just remembered as well is Audi will black-list a car for future warranty claims too, so may be yet another aspect of researching a used car to check it hasn't already been added to that list.
