Appreciate all the thoughts.
Rang the garage this morning, no information, they wil ring me back later when they have spoken to the owner's son who is dealing with it
In the meantime this morning I had problems with the hydraulic lift on the bus, but that only took 40 minutes including the return journey to fix.
I'll update as soon as I hear.

In the wonderful words of the mechanic:-
"It's your ECU Mate. It is all frazzled inside"

Phoned our sponsor, the answer was:-
"Sorry, we don't have that, they never go wrong. D3s are bullet proof"

Managed to find three with exact part number on fleebay, two in Lithuania, one in UK. All of a muchness price wise. Bought the UK one at £279. Should be with me by Thursday. I phoned them and they said they would do their best to get it on it's way to arrive Wednesday.
If the A8 had been available I would of driven down and collected it. Duh!! Catch 22 again.
When it arrives (three month warranty) it will take minutes to fit, but then it will have to be reprogrammed. Hopefully that should only be a matter of minutes.

How did it become fried would be my question?

If it is indeed cooked you need too make sure the wiring and wot not feeding it is not goosed too as it may well cook the replacement.

I really hope it's an easy fix for you though

Well, my attempt at a humorous thread quickly turned sour, didn't it?

Sorry to hear of your woes fella, hope it's soon sorted satisfactorily

You will need to retrieve the SKC security code from the original ECU or VDO in order to pair the donor for IMMO reasons. Some specialists have that equipment and failing that its a Gekko dial up job with the dealer. Sure you mechanic knows that but i would also enquire how he arrived at that conclusion - presumably he has removed the rear lid and seen the circuit board is black and discoloured for instance but let him answer that part..

I have just realised that I am duplicating this in:-

So that I do not hijack this thread with my tales of woe I wil continue the saga on the above thread.
Hope that makes sense.

So back on topic.....

You've had you're car a whole year ?

Sheesh. I think the last car I had past 12 months was a company lease car, and even then I managed to bum it off onto a new starter .... :D
