Rnse install so far

Well it's been a few weeks since I last updated the thread so thought I d quickly mention what's been happening...

The first thing that was the real stumbling block was the fact that rns e and hence peripherals such as bluetooth and digital tv expect a can bus signal to work...problem pf a8 doesnt have canbus!!!!

Plan A was to update the instrument cluster...which turned out to be a very boring and unfruitful task...which provided its own difficulty....main issue wit trying upgrade...which I believe is impossible unless u r familiar with can bus programming and can program microprocessors is that the rev counter...gear selection works with from messages via canbus to the drivetrain high and low connections...

I didn't realise this until I was almost there with the change...but along the way I blew a random...which caused its own problems....so all in all not a good plan!!!!!!

Plan b. which thankfully has worked...leave instrument cluster alone and get canbus emulator from kufatec....this lets the rns e know when car is switched on and when lights are on also....very usefull and provides the signal fro Bluetooth to work tooo....thank god this worked....

Following on I am now installing the Bluetooth module...which isn't too bad until u get to the vagcom coding bit...will explain in more detail later....

Things left to do now are

1. Wire in reverse feed, gala speed signal, alarm ground wire
2.fitgps antenna in boot as wont get passed double glazing

Long term worry is the time signal which usually
Comes from instrument cluster...but I am hoping the rns e picks this up automatically via gps

Following the above bits I might be home and dry...but I am tempted by reverse camera and iPhone docking station....

Awesome work there, Ranj. It'll be worth the hassle when you're all done. +++

I've described what I did to fit an aftermarket replacement for my failed boot-lid original.
Cable routed into boot under the rubber lip seal - dead easy as long as you go sideways.
Here's a picture showing "dead" original and it's excellent near-invisible replacement:

Is that like the Tom Tom 'extension' outside antenna?

I've also noticed that you're PF has a different type of heated rear screen to mine...

HPsauce 10th December 2011 08:09 PM

What's different about the rear screen?
I'm not sure if it incorporates the radio aerial.
I also have the usual complex vertical wire aerial on the boot.
With 4 signals to deal with - radio, TV, phone & GPS - the only one I know for sure is the GPS.

The GPS antenna is just one I bought on eBay - powered type with a long lead.
It has a common type of connector which is inevitably different to the one Audi use (rare/unavailable) so a bit of wiring and soldering was involved.

RanjS8 11th December 2011 12:05 AM

gps antenna

I actually found that when I put the antenna in the boot, I was still picking up 3 or 4 satellites....also another member believes that cos the rear windscreen is different to the front it is possible to place the antenna under the rear parcel shelf also...(I haven't tried this, but will see...as I going to remove the rear parcel to feed the wires through for the bluetooth kit....)

Any D2 with factory TV will have a single pane rear screen which should work a lot better with the GPS aerial....

Without factory TV and it will be twin pane like the front. +++

rnse in and working.....!!!!!!...almost

3 Attachment(s)
Well I finally got the rns e in and working today...felt good going to work...felt like the inside of a different car....lol

At present I have the rns e working in so much as it plays music from the sd cards, the sat nav works and the screen lights up with the lights and starts when I turn the ignition.

I don't have DIS working, but to be honest I m not missing it as much as I thought I would.....but thats would be a big project in itself...maybe one day....

I still have to integrate the bluetooth....stuck on the vag com coding at present...as it isnt quite integrating fully as yet.

I am half happy at present, but once I have the bluetooth working then I will be very happy indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shown below are pics of the rns e, and also I included a picture of where the mirror memory control module lives as this where I got the reverse wire feed from....pin 3 red/blue wire.....this was easier than connecting to the reverse light wire at the back of the car....

Singh 13th December 2011 10:36 PM

Nice one Ranj, why have you got Bruno Mars on your SD card? Going to delete that next time I get in the car.

Is the OEM GPS aerial housing hollow? Or if not, you could take it apart, hollow it out and fit your aftermarket receiver in it. So the GPS receiver houses the aftermarket item.

Just looks more OEM.

First thing I thought of doing, but having taken it off and dismantled it, it soon became obvious that wasn't practical.
I can't recall now exactly why as it was some years ago (I'm on my 2nd replacement aerial now), but basically Audi designed something that really was virtually impossible to hack about.

I'm not unhappy about the solution, in reality you just don't notice it.

RanjS8 14th December 2011 02:03 PM

finally got the bluetooth working...but no contacts for now

Well I finally got everything back together today. This hasnt been the case since I have owned the car, which well over a year and half.

I had a good look online last night at how to code the bluetooth module....and i came up with the following bits of code::

module 77 0000522

adaptation values 133 - 1, 134 - 0, 135 - 1234

128 - 3
129 - 0
131 - 4

Module 37 0509753

9 told the rns e I had bose
7 eu module

I cant remember the logic behind the other values, but will post more information on these soon.

After doing the above, I came out of vagcom.

Turned off the engine.
Restarted the engine.
When the rns e came on went to the telephone screen...which told me telephone not connected.
Then promptly reset the rns e by holding down the radio and setup keys down for about 10 seconds until the screen went blank and came back on again.

Now when ever I start the car the phone connect with the rns e via bluetooth.

Contacts havent download as yet...but this is a software issue which I will deal with later....

Now this was working I went on to position the microphone.

Luckily the the microphone wire was long enough to feed from the boot of the car. where the bluetooth module sits, to the front of the car. I placed the microphone next to the sunroof switch behind the plastic cover for sunroof motor...as there were some vent type holes which seemed perfect.

I fed the microphone wire along the passenger side, up the B Pillar, Under the headlining and fed it through to this position. I have included some pics below of this process of how i got the headlining bits off.

The main points are:

1. Screw out coat hook
2. Remove door handle and top on passenger side
3.Now headlining can be pull away as it is only held in by clips
4.Remove cover for lights on the sunroof motor cover
5.Undo the two philips holding the cover in place and slide it forward and down to release

Top notch work there, this car must be a keeper then, if the gearbox etc goes you will have to replace it consdering how much you've spent. Must be the most pampered no expense spared pre facelift around even if it has got the odd battlescar on the bodywork but consdering you do 40k miles a year in it that isn't a surprise. +++

PsYcHe 14th December 2011 04:06 PM

Lookin good... Is that a carbon wrap, or carbon interior?

Architex_mA8tey 14th December 2011 04:36 PM

Great Job Ranj, and nicely documented - I shall dub thee with the order of the sticky shortly. . . . arise sir RanjA8 :D

Singh 14th December 2011 04:56 PM

You ain't nobody on this forum 'till you get stickied :D

RanjS8 14th December 2011 07:05 PM

thanks guys

thanks guys....

It hasnt been easy....however i was contacted by another member today who informed me that there may be able communicate signals between the rns e and dis of the pf instrument cluster....

if this is the case then this mod is a definite...

The carbon effect is wrap....wasnt too difficult to apply and i thought it would go better with the rns e

If this is the case, he will become the RNS-E GOD!!!! For years people across the globe (literally!!!) have been trying to do exactly that.

Lovin' the install, what did you use to fill the gap between the nave unit & the tapered edges of the hole?

A8_Tony 14th December 2011 09:37 PM

Ignore my question about gaps, just seen the 1st pic again!!! doh!!

RanjS8 14th December 2011 11:06 PM

the gap between rns e and hole of double din fascia

When I compared the rns e to the rns c...it turned out the units were the same shape...just the faceplate of the rns e was different.

So all i did was cut the faceplate down to the rns c shape behind it.

Ideally I would have liked to taken the faceplate off...however I was unsure of how to disconnect the ribbon cable from the screen and didnt really want to rip it...so just went gung ho insitu...which was probably a better strategy as I could use the rns c shape behind the faceplate as a guide.

So my strategy was hacksaw the sides down and then use a electric sander to get the sides flush. I could have been neater with the finish, however I dont really have the patience or a good hand for these sort of things....but i was fairly happy with the result.

Singh 16th December 2011 11:12 PM

This looks bloody amazing, as if it were factory fitted. Wasn't sure about the carbon fibre in the pictures but in the flesh it is awesome. Really good job, Ranj, check out the meets section and take the car over on the 30th, it deserves to be shown off.

thebluewhale 22nd December 2011 06:38 PM

Hugely impressive install and thread.

:respekt:

Is this the first RNS-c to e install?

jayzee 22nd December 2011 07:21 PM

Beautiful job
