Thanks for that. I've bitten the bullet and bought the correct light unit, the combination of cracked glass and wrong connections made it a no-brainer really.

Counting the leveller unit my lights have 3 connectors. I presume the change in '97 was to the single (plus leveller) plug.

Car now back together and running. Still some cosmetic work needed to the bonnet dent and bumper cracks but it's working and brought me to work this morning.

Its really nice to see one of the early D2's being preserved and used as a daily driver, there really can't be many in that position now +++

Thanks. :) It's an "every other day" daily driver as duties are shared with my equally ancient C4 A6 Avant, which in 2.5 TDI form goes twice as far on a litre of fuel.

I do know someone else locally who runs an even older A8 4.2 QS as his daily driver, and in his case it's his "economy car" as it's on LPG and his other vehicles are 60's Americana whose drinking problems are in a different league!
