The switch itself is an arse to get to though, as its behind the downpipe and gearbox mount. You need to lift the gearbox slightly and take the mount off to get to one of the bolts, and the downpipe obscures the other one. Probably a good hour's work to change it on a lift.

Symptoms are identical to what mine was doing. I hope I'm right thinking it was user error, and not the switch failing on mine. How much are they new at the mo?

Thats good. I'll check out the connector. The Audiforum guide is very clear about the "difficult" torx bolt behind the down pipe. Basically the guy doing it ground down a torx bit so was shorter and could be fitted behind. The price of a 2nd hand one from our sponsors is c £105. Havent found out yet what a new one is - will check tomorrow but HP reckons its not a lot more.

IIRC about £150 for new - but I bought mine 6 yrs ago!

The part is listed as £174 + VAT on my recent Mackie's bill

Not much different now, my garage looked it up. Though probably need to add VAT to that.

Looked on ETKA this morning and the RRP is now £183.71 incl VAT so you should be able to get a new one for under £150 from TPS or local dealer. Part number is 01L 919 821B.

It lists the 10 pin plug for gearbox codes FUM, FUU, FSG, FBE, FBG. Mine's the last of those.

Rather worryingly for anyone requiring the 8 pin version, it's jumped in price to £350......

Thanks for that Adrian +++
Makes the sponsors 8 pin price seem not too bad! Fortunately mine, as you say, is most probably the 10 pin as its FBG. I'll verify the connector though when I can get under the car. Thanks for the part no as our sponsors list them without as they say that they cant ever find it on the removed part.

Yours is the same age as mine, and gearbox code, so doubt it's anything other than 10 pin.

Well, got underneath the car today and examined the (10pin rectangular) plug. Clean as a whistle and no corrosion. I had hoped that there might be some obvious cause of poor signal or whatever. Any way, gave it a few squirts of contact cleaner and out it back together and when I backed off the ramps - no PRNDS. Manoeuvered about the driveway and all seems OK so far. Not counting my chickens but.......

At least if it comes back again you've confirmed it as a likely cause if it stops it for a few weeks.

I had similar with a front ABS sensor that I was convinced couldn't be faulty, as it's the only one I've previously had cause to change! Sure enough after 5 years and some copious fiddling I had to accept it was getting worse. New sensor and been perfect since!

Exactly. Just driven into town to pick the Mrs up and it behaved smoothly in S and D and was OK going into Reverse. +++

My indy garage priced the switches from TPS and the 10 pin version was £175+VAT whilst the 8 pin was around £235 + VAT(but N/A).
