I love my 4.2 Tdi, I've done about 4000 miles in it now, and it is the perfect engine. It's also virtually the perfect spec, but I've given this some thought and here's my niggles list:
1) When I lock the car, just close the windows and sunroof completely so I dont have to stand there wasting 15 seconds holding the dam button down 2) I want to see MPG/Range/Av MPG all at once. My DIS is huge, why do I have to choose only one ? 3) Why is ventilated seats only available on comfort seats. I dont like comfort seats, and love sports seats, but would have liked ventilated also. 4) Why cant you get 3 spoke sport heated steering wheel.... 5) The MFSW needs a simple 'next track', 'previous track' instead of the stupid thumbwheel that lets me navigate menus and other stuff. Seriously? I'm driving, if I'm going to start messing to that extent I'll use the MMI which is not too far away 6) The interior light pack has some fantastic lighting, but its not configurable in a way that is pleasing at all. 3 of the 4 insist on putting on overhead lighting which is bloody awful. 7) Why, when I'm on the phone, does both the DIS and the MMI screen have to show me I'm on the phone? If I've got Sat Nav on, then why suddenly make me blind to where the hell I'm going just because somebody decided to call me at the entrance to a 6 way intersection ? 8) When I have a diesel, and I'm cold starting with the start button - Have the intelligence to use the glow plugs for a few seconds before spending 10 seconds chewing away at the battery trying to start it cold 9) If I engage Sports mode on the gearshift, engage dynamic suspension too. 10) Sat Nav missing postcode entry. Really dissapointing when the D3 never got that feature 11) When the fuel light comes on, why the heck cant the Sat Nav understand that and helpfully point out whether there are any stations on route, or whether you really need to make a course correction 12) If you have a single failed PDC sensor on the front for example, at least still use the rear ones instead of crapping out altogether. 13) If I'm low on screenwash, remind me the second I open the door to climb into the car, not as i'm just driving off for the 8th time having forgotten repeatedly 14) Fold through rear seats would have been a real bonus on occasion for many 8 owners I'm sure 15) Armrests. What the heck were they thinking when they did the D3. The D2 FL armrests are huge, you can put small children in there, yet on the D3 they became utterly useless 16) Heated seats. Why cant I adjust the heated seat temperature, without it turning on the bloody climate, that I then have to turn off. Sometimes I like to drive with sunroof open, heated seat on, climate off. But every time you adjust the heated seat buttons the whole climate springs back into life again.... 17) Radar cruise should work from 0-20mph, i.e. be able to crawl in bad motorway traffic. I think newer Audis can do this.... 18) Autolights should come on at motorway speeds irrespective of light levels, and should come on when auto-wipers are wiping fast in bad rain.... I think thats it. It probably sounds like I'm moaning, but actually they are all very little things and overall I love it, it is the best car I've ever had.... I'm bowled over by the economy and performance, and to have radar cruise and B&O back has been utterly awesome. Making daily use of the fridge too +++ |

I always wanted to automatically mute stereo when reversing is engaged since I wanted to concentrate and listen to parking sensors when I do maneuvering.
I have solved that problem by feeding ground to mute pin of my RNS-E when the LED on Parktronic button is on. When LED turns off I remove ground from mute pin and RNS-E continues playing where is was paused. This is very convenient. Just engage reverse and it's going mute immediately. When maneuvering is finished and car speed is growing the parktronic LED turns off automatically and this moment RNS-E continues to play music. This was done with a simple optoisolator and I think I documented this mod here. |
Id like twin turbos and a V10 some :)
Oh as for the d3 interior mood pack you can have it on with out the interior light by double pressing the 0 button on the interior light swich and the a single press of the on button will light up the rear and a second press will bring on the front aswell :) +++ |

18) Autolights should come on at motorway speeds irrespective of light levels, and should come on when auto-wipers are wiping fast in bad rain.... [quote] I'm not sure if you were just testing us with this one.... The D3 does both of these things. 'Highway' lighting is configurable in the MMI I'm sure, which gives you dipped beam at motorway speeds, and Headlights on with wipers is also selectable, but that is either in the hidden menu or perhaps VAGCOM I cant recall. If you need any help with these features feel free to make an appointment for a consultation.... |
"18) Autolights should come on at motorway speeds irrespective of light levels, and should come on when auto-wipers are wiping fast in bad rain...."
Mine does exactly this, not sure of the exact logic and I observe that the speed required may be >80mph, but there are so many versions of the front lighting over the years and specs. that I can see how some may and some may not. |
I'd quite like my D3 to have a sat nav that doesn't stop working just as I really need to know which way to go, or randomly decide I'm suddenly off road. :tuttut:
I'd quite like the date and time to have some correlation with reality instead of resetting itself not only every day but now almost every journey. On the plus side I'm often back at home 2 or 3 days before I left work. :p It might be reaching for the stars, but I'd be so happy if the DIS would stop randomly telling me one or more of my rear lights has stopped working when everything is fine. :( It would also have been good for my blood pressure if the orange engine light hadn't recently popped on for 36 hours before deciding it's work was done and returned to splendid hibernation. :( That said I'm still very glad its my car and if I only had TV my youngest would be even more impressed than I am. |
It seems quite clever that the instrument lighting dims itself as the outside light level falls - to warn you it is time to put your headlights on.
But wait a minute, I always have my lights set to "Auto" which means they come on when outside light levels fall. Was it beyond their abilities to synchronise the two features - it annoys me that the car knows it is dark enough to warn me to put the lights on yet still doesn't actually switch them on until it gets a bit darker (even when set to auto). So glad I don't have anything serious to complain about or desire. Some would say the standard sound system is pants - but so is my hearing. Regards, John |

David has promised me he will enlighten me as to where i'm being stupid, so I will hopefully be enjoying these benefits soon. After all, the basic principal of having my xenons blazing at 'motorway speeds' is to make sure every fecker hogging my high speed lane knows I'm coming and to relocate swiftly to one of the peasant lanes......or is that just me ?... :p |
