it's pretty clear that the basic design of the box is not what is needed
it's the code !

eg I had a look at the different 5HP19FLA 's that appeared in the USA list

the choice is
EMP/FAQ/FEJ/CJZ

so , at a guess , a different range of bits in the same casing , and my box is coded ECH extrapolating from david's sticker
so what is EUT ?
if anyone has the list of part numbers maybe they can get confirmation from the following number , which is the one on the invoice from audi for the [ presumably ] rebuilt transmission

A01V 30030430KX

seems our hosts have got it right selling by the code rather than the basic box number !

If yours (MY 2000) is EUT and mine (2001?) is EUU is it a manufacturing code as suggested by Ainars in that EUU would be the next in a alphabetic series ?

There are many different gearbox codes, but only a handful of different ZF gearbox designs in use.

The main difference with all the Audi codes is the final drive ratio for the output on the front axle that is built in. Ideally it wants to match like for like, but worst case you need to change the rear final drive too (in quattros) or its gonna get messy...

I have seen D2's 'repaired' with the wrong gearbox before now, but probably not recommended.

On front wheel drive cars you have only a gearbox code, which includes the final drive ratio for the front wheels in the box.

On quattros you have 2 codes, one for the box, and one for the rear diff.

Get the right gearbox code and all will be well...

bullseye ! it is stated elsewhere as a manufacturing code , just got it the wrong way around !

unfortunately the gearbox I quoted ex the hosts turns out to be FWD

I said that I think EUT is rear diff code not the box, and it seems I was right

so is it engine , diff, box or engine ,box ,diff ?

HPsauce 8th June 2015 02:12 PM

Ours sponsors would probably know. ;)
Mine is AVP EUU FBG which based on the above suggests EUU is the rear diff.
(AVP is definitely the engine)

e.g. see this listing of an FBG gearbox on eBay by our sponsors: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audi-S8-D2-5...-/171662557797

have to admit I have learned a lot from this thread
only look at the code
ignore our sponsors list of car's it's suitable for , just look at the code they state
if you by something not precise in the same casing , match the diff to it !

Just looked at the Service Manual for O1L boxes in the Tech Dump sticky (RTFM)! and it lists all transmissions and their codes. Whilst there is no "ECH" there IS an "ECX" which, giving the computer type face used for the build stickers could have been misread, perhaps? The ECX has a manufacture "from" date of 04.97 but no "to" date.

My old (PF) S8 which was built in 1998 had an ECX box.

Yes, unfortunately the Ebay compatibility system leaves a lot to be desired. Their genius plan is that every Ebay seller will sit there for hours clicking a million buttons to get the perfect listing with 100% accurate compatibility, however the choices they give are ambiguous to start with, meaning its impossible.... That's why we, and everyone else who list more than 10 items make do with an approximation, and the place where they are least accurate are around engine specific items....

If in doubt, contact a8parts direct with your reg or vin as they have all the tools to confirm 100% if a part will fit your car +++
