Hi There,
Well this morning has been interesting. The belt timing is fine. However the chain timing appears to be off by two teeth, causing the inlet valves to be out and due to no compresion on cylinders 1, 2 and 4 we are guessing bent inlet valves. 3 Reads about 25 rather than the 130 on one of the other banks cylinder (7 iirc). We did manage to knock the chain back one tooth using a variator tool, but this made no difference. Unless someone has a bright idea it's either A8 Parts or Ebay Spares or Repairs I guess ??? Unless someone wants a 4 cylinder S8 ? Lee |
Hi there,
Having a play with a usb bore scope camera with my net top (£12 off ebay, adjustable light, 10mm diameter, basic but....) http://flic.kr/p/hkS987 http://flic.kr/p/hkTbhc http://flic.kr/p/hkREG4 http://flic.kr/p/hkRETg http://flic.kr/p/hkTbuB Not quite what I expected to find, ie 3 half rings per piston from the inlet valves, but there seems to be damage. The pistons also don't seem to be a perfect flat surface, almost like they are ridged. Engine is AVP. Guess the engine is dead now and the car not worth it (i have a few other electrical and other niggling issues). Lee |
Sorry to hear the damage was that bad. Are the cylinder walls scored?
I have a couple off-the-wall ideas as usual. If you have the tools to install an engine yourself, you could buy a spare engine from A8 parts. Maybe you could even install the earlier 32V engine, then no more problems with variators. Only tricky bit could be getting it to talk to the later transmission ECU which might be expecting a fly-by-wire throttle (not sure could be wrong). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-4-2-V...item27d3835b13 Or, mad idea no.2, make it a project car, get a TDI 01E manual box for around £200, get the above 32V engine for £900, and talk with Mike who has found a machinist who is going to make a LHD manual pedal box. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A6-C5...item2c760155a8 The D2 S8 is a fantastic platform to build a amazing car on, its light, its rigid, it doesnt rust, it can be 4wd or 2wd, very nice interior, proper suspension none of that air suspension stuff that can fail. What it really needs is a more powerful engine like this, then you have a budget supercar. http://www.ebay.de/itm/Mercedes-SL-6...item3a86d484d4 |

Goran - No idea on the walls....the images show marks on the pistons that i assume are the valves. I could take it all apart, but I doubt i'd achive much apart from grubbiness!
The cars are really not worth messing about with. Looking arround you can get a D2 FL A8 fully working for silly money depending on specs. £2-4K depending on miles and engine spec. There is a tempting 2.8L one near me at the lower end of that which i'm wondering how much i'd miss the S8 suspension/engine and even LPG. I am wondering how much trouble it would be to transfer the manifold and LPG system to another 40V..... Alternativly maybe a D3 some of those are dangerously cheap. A 3L TDI may give similar MPG ??? Thats true you can get a really cheap working S8 (D2) these days. Neil's suggestion is spot on.
I was just thinking from the perspective of people who do engine swaps. They swap engines into all sorts of cars, some of which are bordering on rust bucket junk. A D2 is a really nice platform and (in my opinion) much more deserving of an engine swap than some other cars that people spend time and money on. |
As in the PM, I'm interested in the engine complete and the LPG system if available.
