Very interesting about the fuel gauge - one to remember. Glad it all seems to be behaving again +++

I wonder if part of the conditioning circuit does have a link with the VSS so that it slows the response time of the gauge when the car is moving? Perhaps if it is stationary the circuit is disabled so that you get a quick response when filling with fuel, and so with the VSS broken its just showing the fuel sloshing around.

It'll be very interesting to see how it behaves with a new one +++

VW's do this starting with mk3s.

Well here is an interesting one, everything was working well but now the fuel gauge had died, just does not ever move off the peg.

The car has fuel in and drives fine +++

Looking at VAGCOM I can see from the instruments measuring block its telling me I have 25l in the tank and the sender reading for Ohms is working also and both getting data from the fuel pump.

Drove for a while and checked again and was reading 20l and the Ohms had increased so all seemed to be working OK there.

I wonder if through all of this fun the actual dash gauge has died due to acting like a VU meter when the speedo sender was playing up!

There is an option in VCDS to test the instrument cluster, and in particular all the needles. It's similar to the needle sweep on the newer cars but much s-l-o-w-e-r. Worth giving that a try.

You are spot on, cheers +++

Went to 17 Instruments and did the output tests and all the needles moved including the fuel gauge so that was working.

Fuel gauge/ sender is channel 30 so went to adaptation.

That had a value of 128 in and the gauge then moved to just over a 1/4 of a tank which makes sense as it was telling me I have 20l in there. Ran the Test and it came back OK.

Saved it and I now have a working fuel gauge.

It must have lost itself without the speed sender and did not know where is was hence needed to be adapted back.

All working +++
