Not sure how much to trust but he did start the car and sounded pretty smooth. Plus had under 80k on clock that matches with MOT history. Oh it also had expired MOT. Would you say 1.6fsi is better?

The 1.6 Fsi is 110 bhp and drives really well to keep up with traffic and overtake etc, still seems to do 40 mpg around town and up to 55 on a longer run :D
The only downside is car tax which is dearer than the diesels at £165/Yr +++

The 1.4's are terrible for generic issues and limp mode. The 1.6's are terrible for carbon build up.

They're both terrible for tax disc cost - but - the 1.6 is allegedly great fun to drive. (I've never has one that worked properly!)

The 1.4 Tdi is really the one to have, engine will outlast the body, which being ally, is saying something, and cheap tax disc to boot. The Tdi is 3 cylinder as well, makes a funny little noise, reminds me of an old Subaru Justy. Being turbo, it has a tiny bit of potential for a remap. The later ones came with more bhp from the factory too.

I reckon a 1.8T swap is the solution for all of those problems :D

Ironically, after chatting to Neil about the A2, I made some enquiries with my insurance company to see how much it would cost to insure a 1.4tdi (I gave them the reg of one for sale on eBay), and it came in at £10.....

That's to say, £10 more than my insurance for the A8, and that includes a 10% for multiple policies! And there was me thinking of picking up a cheap car with cheap tax and cheap running expenses.

Got any links to that please? I've found a couple of 1.8T swaps but not found anyone who has got quattro in one yet.

Also found a 1.9 PD swap which must have a few traction issues

Eee, we're talking some time back here, when I used to trawl the A2 forums in some geeky detail, so, no - no links saved. It sticks in my mind as unlike every other Audi of that era, the A2 was never built with quattro (one alleged reason it was canned) so to retrofit, is not a trivial task at all.

I imagine you'd need an S1 or A3 with quattro and then transplant the floorpan/make the body fit over the original? It's quite popular with the old school Ford scene if you want to Cosworth your Mk2 Escort etc.....
