Squeaking

Have just noticed a squeaking noise under hard acceleration. Seems to happen at gear change only. Any ideas? And should i be worried? :-(

PsYcHe 22nd May 2011 07:35 PM

Is the wife in the car at the time? Have you checked to make sure you're not making any involuntary noises?

Though, where does the noise sound like it's coming from? Could be the gearbox needing serviced.

Snaga 22nd May 2011 07:47 PM

just heard it when i put my foot down and gearbox dropped down a gear. Really sounds like a squeak, short sharp like a door hinge.

Conan_the_Librarian 22nd May 2011 08:46 PM

Could it be a door hinge!

No

:(:(

is it more of a 'whoop' kind of noise? mine has done that once or twice, usually when dropping to second.

Yeah, i suppose you could describe it as a whoop...

Just_Ben 23rd May 2011 09:48 AM

Perhaps it's excited!

Seriosuly thongh, needs looking at but could be something as simple as an air leak on the inlet/vacuum system. As the throttle opens quickly the rush of air can make a funny noise if it's leaking somewhere.

Should be simple enough to find. I'd be suprised if it was the gearbox - not impossible but if it was bad enough to make a nosie I'd expect some kind of driving symptoms too.

Just_Ben 23rd May 2011 09:51 AM

The Suction-Jet-Pump near the throttle body rubber boot is a common one for making dodgy noises.

It is a ventrui based devise that increases vacuum supplied to the braking system. If the car is equipped with an electric brake vacuum booster pump also then these can fail, putting toto much strain on the Suction Jet Pump and cause noise also.

I may be a mile off but without actually hearing it this is my best guess

PsYcHe 23rd May 2011 10:03 AM

On mine if definitely sounds like some kind of cavitation noise.. almost like blowing over a near empty bottle. I'll take a look at the throttle body if it ever stops raining :)

Thanks for the input guys. If the service book is correct the ATF was changed at just over 40k by Audi, so shouldnt need doing again.

Will need it doing again mate. That's the honking noise.

And to be honest go to an independant and they will do it properly. Audi suck the oil out with a special tool. Always better dropping the pan, changing the filter and letting it drain overnight..

Snaga 6th June 2011 12:56 PM

So should i be worrying if i dont get it done straight away?

Snaga 7th June 2011 06:59 AM

How much should this gearbox oil change cost me?

ainarssems 7th June 2011 02:13 PM

£200 ish

Snaga 7th June 2011 05:14 PM

thanks. So £355 is well above the odds then?

PsYcHe 7th June 2011 06:22 PM

355 isn't horrendous.. I'd expect about 300 or so for the full job with fluid, filters, etc.

ainarssems 7th June 2011 07:05 PM

11-12l of oil @ around £8 per liter, £30 for the filter an rest for the job.

A8 Doc 19th September 2011 07:17 AM

Audi charged me £200 I remember. Basically cost of the oil!

They won't change the filter though, go to an independant if I were you.

My Honking now sorted!

Hello

This is my first post and what a great site!

Today I've just had an independent garage change my 4.0l 2005 A8's (its just done 80K Miles) transmission fluid after reading about it on here.

The "honking" got progressively worse and can now report its completely fixed no honking and silky smooth.

Just wanted to say thanks for a great resource

Where abouts are you in the country James? And how much did you pay?

jamestoo 26th September 2011 09:23 PM

Hi I'm English and so is the car however both in Bucharest, Romania it was about 300 Quid all in and the majority of that was fluids :-( however well worth it for piece of mind that the gear box isn't about to pack up.

Welcome! :)

So the car is finally in for its gearbox oil change. Im also having the OS inlet manifold taken off so an independant assessor can see it and hopefully pay out for a new one, new fuel filter, oil change and maybe some new brakes. fingers crossed for the manifold.
