Racing Sim build

Despite my insatiable fascination with the Nurburgring, the universe in general continues to thwart my attempts to actually drive on the damn thing. So, I will drive it from my living room instead :p

No fancy super-expensive sim cockpits here. I have plywood...

Painted it Audi R18 colours :D This is v1, hooked up to the TV:

Obligatory S8 seat, and a super-rare Nardi steering wheel from an Audi 80 Sport, on a custom adapter to fit the Logitech wheel base

I remounted the pedals from floor-hinged to top-hinged and matched the angles & spacing to the S8. Unfortunately Gizmo felt he was the more important element of this picture

The TV didn't work - I need my peripheral vision to also be moving to get a sense of speed, so I added triple 32" screens to it. Cable management is a challenge!

Tidied up and cat-proofed, otherwise they will get nibbled

Ta-dah!

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1693931292

I put a smaller and lighter steering wheel on it as the Nardi wasn't very responsive. This is still more car-size than the toy that came with the wheel base though.

and also an Audi V8 DTM

This thing is immense fun, and amazingly immersive with the screens like this. We're now experimenting with a few different games to find which one we like the most as they all have good and bad points. Since Saturday we've both got in 30-40 laps of the 'ring without having to leave the house :D We're getting pretty familiar with it now and can do clean 7:30 laps.

Other tracks are available of course - almost all of them in fact, so I'll be using this to learn them before we go on track days. I'm not intending to race with it - I've done competitive motorsport and tbh track days are a lot more fun.

That is bonkers brilliant. I love it. I am jealous. And my current PC setup is not a million miles away from this, hmmmmm

tintin 7th September 2023 12:20 PM

Lovely -and has to be a red seat, of course +++. When do you start taking bookings ? :D (Truro is nearer than Germany, and I can, err..., drop Herman off for his favourite type of holiday at the same time ;)...)

RICKY D 7th September 2023 12:43 PM

That looks epic MJ. I’d lose weeks of my life at a time on that :D

"I'll just do a couple of laps after tea"
"oh, its midnight" :eek2:

Of course lapping the 'ring isn't quite the same as a couple of laps of Spa

Just brilliant! +++

I think bonkers brilliant as TonUpKid says is the right description! But be careful, the men in white coats may be paying you a visit soon....

Spanker 30th September 2023 08:40 AM

You've driven past the exhibition hall plenty of times....

I've been in much less good ship simulators........but dont you lose out on the G force feeling when braking and cornering and road feedback??? I'm sure a hydraulic platform to mount it all on isnt beyond you ;)

You must be joking! They hadnt invented them then! Besides we had sufficient ships to play with you didnt need one.

Yes, but if you get the visuals right your brain just fills in the rest. There's a thing called Field of Vision (FOV) which is critical to get right so you get a proper sense of speed. Its taken a while for me to get that right, and tbh I still need the monitors closer, but with a proper sense of speed, muscle memory takes over for braking & steering. Cutting out external stimuli helps with immersion too so I tend to run with the lights off so that the monitors are the primary focus.

Yes, you can do better. Full motion rigs that can simulate g forces are available, but far more complex and expensive than I want to get involved in :)

Looking great way of relaxation..
Enjoy..
Maybe we should arrange a A8 trip to the 'ring?

2024 anyone?

MikkiJayne 4th October 2023 06:51 PM

We always make a thread when we're planning a trip but its only ever Mike and I that are able to go. You're welcome to join us in '24 though +++

I'm going again next weekend but I guess thats slightly too short notice :D

donp38 24th October 2023 07:27 PM

Next week!
I only just read the post.
The S8 needs some fettling first!

But yes, I am in...... 2024...

MikkiJayne 26th October 2023 08:07 AM

They always do :D

Oil leaks,
Brakes,
Cooling system

Everything else is a bonus.

We'll make a thread when we know dates +++

sarg 26th October 2023 01:08 PM

When you've finished with this one and build another, can I call dibs on the first project please?
