Hybrid TV Tuner

Thanks to IT, big cheer Ian. I now have a working TV in the car.

Everyone says 10 minutes to swap the analogue for a digital tuner - - - well not for me. Took two and a half hours of back bent leaning into the boot.
Took out the navigation DVD player and the Parking Aid Module.
Realised the complete audio rack would have to come out because the TV Tuner was on the rear of the rack.
Disconnected the battery for safety reasons.
Removed the fuse holder.
Unplugged and removed the electronic thingy box from the front of the audio rack.
Unfastened the audio rack, twisted and manouvered the bloooooodie thing all over the place without success.
Removed all the side trim, plastic and compressed fibre.
Swore loudly, woke the neighbours baby, and twisted and manouvered the rack until it finally came out.
Found the TV tuner was mounted with screws on the side so this other electronic box thingy had to be removed.
Finally undid the four screws and removed the analogue TV box.

Now for part two. I had to do it all again but in the reverse order.
Wish I could remember what fitted where!!!!
Took an uneducated guess and blomin' 'eck it all went back together and I only had one nut leftover. Found where the nut belonged, tried to fit it and the ruddy nut did what nuts do and ran away behind the audio rack.
Well it can stay there, no way is that sodding thing coming out again, certainly not in my lifetime!!!!

Closed the boot and went indoors for a cuppa.

Back to the car and the boot would not open. Panic.
Used the key and managed to open the boot.
After the battery was reconnected I had to reset the time clock and the car was apparently back to working order.
But the TV did not work. MMI, Radio, AMI, Navigation and CD player were working.
After panicking again I PM'd IT Ian, but he put me right. Basically, have patience, have a little drive and see what happens.
As it said at the start of this boring missive, IT WORKS.
Took management to ASDA and while SWMBO did the shopping I watched the ITV news.
I love it.

Glad is sorted, I had every confidence it would be fine. Sorry we seemed to run out of time to do it in Wales, but on reflection the DVB-T reception at the George would probably have been lousey too lol +++

Enjoy the sense of satisfaction having done it yourself, and job well done +++

Haha I feel your pain, after struggling for sometime with various projects that heart sinking feeling of finding something to be not right really knocks the wind out of your sails.

Then only to find later that its all OK

Glad its all working for you now though Ray +++

Johnmed 6th June 2015 08:45 AM

Excellent work.

Wel jel.

Nice one Ray +++

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who struggled for an hour or two getting that damn media rack out. I nearly posted on here asking for clues, but was too shy for what seemed like a 10 minute beginners job

Aw shucks guys, you make me feel so good.
Today I took a 57 seater full of Para retirees to Bedworth for a day out. Had a good day but back home and knackered.
The good bit was dropping the coach at the garage, jumping in the 8 and listening to the news on the TV. Made all the hard work so very worthwhile.

BUT, ten minutes, wow!! someone has a very slow running watch.
If, very BIG IF, I had to do it again I could knock maybe about thirty minutes off the job. :D

IT 7th June 2015 09:15 AM

It is defo a 10 job, maybe I'm a little practised on it....

Never mind that though, just clocked Mattys brolly holder in his boot photo, and I love it.... +++

tc4332 7th June 2015 09:27 AM

There was a thread about that type of brolly holder last year.
I went with the Audi one that fits on the D3 toolbox, and managed to sweet talk an Audi black brolly out of Inchcape at Warrington.
Lovely couple of helpful guys in the stores there. Always good for a phone chat.

tc4332 7th June 2015 07:27 PM

I want to know how they do it.
I collected the hybrid TV tuner at the meet, sneaked it to the car and hid it.
Somehow SWMBO spotted it but did not say anything for a couple of hours. Then out of the blue management asked about it. Not being known for quick thinking I muttered something about trying something new with the strange parking aid occurences. Nothing more was said or asked about it.
After I demonstrated the working TV Gwen informed me that it was not a surprise 'cos she had guessed in Wales what I was up to.
How do they do that?????

mattylondon 8th June 2015 12:02 PM

How do they do it, Ray?? Who knows?? I told my SHMBO that I simply installed a new aerial and it magically worked

Ian, the brolly is looped through the carry bag straps and it works a treat +++
I thought these were standard equipment?

A8parts have some in stock.

Ray, I love all technical terms in your original post!

...P.S. What is it about A8 owners' obsession with brolly holders?!?! I can't wait to get one, then maybe I'll get it!

Good job!

Wait till you turn up at a Goodwood Breakfast Meet and park in a soggy field in the pouring rain near your mates.
Then you pop the boot lid, run round, grab the massive strong brolly and in seconds you're in the dry again.

Meanwhile they are rummaging around (with soaked backs) in all the rubbish in their boots for waterproofs or a little folding brolly that immediately blows inside out! :tuttut:

tc4332 21st June 2015 07:06 PM

Tony, Thank you, I was trying to make light of a very time consuming, back aching job. OK, I now know how (that was a tongue twister) to do it really easily, con my son into doing it. :D

As for the brolly thing, I did it 'cos I had blagged a brolly from my local Audi stealer. And yes it is easy to deploy, even when SWMBO has filled the boot with shopping.

Just ordered my DVD-T tuner to replace the analogue one.
It's on it's way from Poland for ~£160 *touch wood*
Thanks for the info. I will take lots of photos and allow extra time+++

tc4332 25th August 2015 10:28 PM

On another thread I have told my woes (sorry, errors) whilst fitting a DAB tuner.
End result was by changing the aerial amplifier I resolved my weak DAB signal problem but have also vastly improved the TV signal. I had video in motion earlier tonight in places where yesterday I had no reception at all.
Good luck with the job. +++

Finally upgraded to Freeview and have TV again after a three year gap.
Thanks again to this great forum.
Had to recode from Audi A4/Central EU to A8/UK, this enabled all four antennas - the A4 must have only three.

Address 57: TV Tuner Labels: None
Part No SW: 4E0 910 148 E HW: 4E0 919 148
Component: R78 TVHybridDVB 0470
Revision: R0H06000 Serial number: 76300801681001
Coding: 0000101 <---had to recode to 0000003

0000(0)000 = A8 D3
0000000(3) = UK/EIRE

It took about 10 mins to get the media rack forward enough to plug into the new one to test and another 20 to swap them over.
Tools needed are stumpy phillips screwdriver.
Small flat-blade screwdriver for plug clips.
10mm 1/4" drive socket (preferably with ratchetless wrench due to lack of swing).
I left everything in the rack and undid the 10mm nuts and bolts holding it in and two for the fuse panel to allow more movement. Rocked forward and unplugged everything from old TV, undid 4 side philips screws holding it in and slid out and new one in. The new one is a little lighter in weight and smaller.

The reception is pretty patchy though as where I live is hilly and has lots of signal blackspots. I also seem to be missing many channels (e.g. all the adult channels) despite driving to the Kimberley transmitter on the way to IKEA. I'll print out this list of multiplexes and see if any are not being received...

Well done.
Puts my effort to shame.
Nice work resolving the aerial 4 problem. +++

tc4332 29th August 2015 09:55 AM

Snap,
Found that mine was 0000303
I've changed it to 0000003
It is still working.
I have no idea what vehicle it originated from, suppose the first 3 means something like an A1:ROFL:

That is what I used. 3 = A6 estate.

Witchfinder 4th September 2015 10:53 AM

Which part is the DVB receiver? I'm getting intermittent sound cut-out in motion, so I want to check all the connectors.

mannyo 4th September 2015 06:28 PM

The sound is sent over the fibre optics, if there was an issue with that the whole MMI would reboot.

The usual cause is weak signal rather than a dodgy connection.
