Guess the Audi price...

Put my car in for one of Audi's general health check things. Got a mate who is a workshop tech in one of the Essex dealers so he was taking live pictures of anything unusual which was good while I was having a coffee

-Headlamp washer hose leaking (fair enough, I bodged it myself with hosepipe)
-Left drive shaft worn
-Right drive shaft worn
-both sides suspension bushes/controls arms worn
-both sides lower arm bushes worn
-front suspension arms and bushes (wishbones), all 4 worn
-rear axle bushes worn
-n/s/r brake caliper slight leak
-brake fluid change required
-cambelt (done late last year but obviously not on their records, so this wouldn't be required)

So... guess the price! ;)

£__,_____

mattylondon 10th August 2015 06:06 PM

£3.5k

Conquistador 10th August 2015 06:16 PM

More

mattylondon 10th August 2015 07:11 PM

What?!? Another £1000 on top?

Delboy 10th August 2015 08:07 PM

So the burning question is will you be getting the work done at Audi?

Conquistador 10th August 2015 08:31 PM

At almost 9 grand, would you?!

A garage I use a lot will do all the arms and bushes for around £550 for a start.

Delboy 10th August 2015 09:20 PM

Holy ****, thats way more than i thought it would be.

:tuttut:

Architex_mA8tey 10th August 2015 09:33 PM

Geez! I've just almost choked on my coffee and biscuits !!!

Adrian E 10th August 2015 09:44 PM

I was adding that up at an average of £1k per job - wouldn't have been surprised at £10k tbh

tintin 10th August 2015 10:08 PM

…which is why Audi need to price their products/services more "realistically" for older models. 9k for maintenance exceeds the value of nearly all of the cars on here.

Conquistador 10th August 2015 10:23 PM

The breakdown is what I find strange.

£800 for the cambelt, but
£1200 per drive shaft, hmm OK, pricey but justifiable.
£1800 for the wishbones though
£1000 for each set of control arms!

Adrian E 11th August 2015 07:23 AM

£800 for the belt won't include any rollers or tensioners, and probably no water pump or thermostat either. You can easily double that price to do a 'proper job' at Audi rates.

You say that Adrian but Swindon Audi quoted me £864+vat to do the whole lot prior to giving me the whole lot for £100 (supported by Audi UK to make up for issues I'd had on my A7) +++

Witchfinder 11th August 2015 10:44 AM

OUCH! Another couple of hundred quid and...

Here's the cambelt section of the estimate...

That's actually not that bad for the belt then! I might get mine done at the main dealer next year.

I just looked back at the history on mine and it was £881 incl VAT at a specialist, but excluding a water pump and thermostat

ETA - I had a quote back in April for getting mine done without replacing the rollers and tensioners. I've included the prices paid when it was done in 2010, but updated the parts prices where possible from the April quote. A full job could potentially be £1100 at these sorts of rates :o

Not doing the rollers and tensioners (since they've all only done 20k miles roughly) would make it £650ish

Goran 11th August 2015 01:59 PM

Wow!!! that is some serious cash!
If it makes you feel any better my S8 needed a ton of stuff done when I got it too.
For a very similar amount of money I had all this done (parts and labour):
- new front subframe
- all-round new Audi shocks and springs
- new rear ARB & arms
- cam belt, all rollers, water pump, thermostat, even eccentric idler
- aux belt and tensioner
- new power steering pump
- gearbox refurb, all new synchros and 1st + 2nd collars
- lower 6th gear
- clutch slave cylinder
- front discs, pads, used calipers bought and refurbed
- some coolant hoses
- SAI coded out and removed, rear lambdas coded out
- new brake fluid
- chain tensioner rail guides replaced
- cam cover gaskets replaced

Audis fixed price servicing for the A8 shows the cambelt and water pump price as 799 too

Their brake prices are cheaper than what my indie charged me for the same job.

Is the S Tronic gearbox oil change applicable to the D2?

Adrian E 11th August 2015 03:26 PM

S-tronic is the newer 7 speed flappy paddle box - which our S5 has - so not comparable. They're set up for frequent oil and filter changes and it's no more difficult than doing the engine oils, hence the cheap-ish price for doing it.

Singh 12th August 2015 06:50 PM

There are still D2s having mega work done through Audi dealers. I know of a PF 3.7, and a FL S8. Both one owner cars. You can get Audi to price match an indie quote anyway, so they're always going to be just as cheap.

Goran 15th August 2015 08:54 AM

Hi Amar, long time no see, good to hear from you.
I didn't know Audi will match independent quotes, good to know for future work.

It can be a bit hit and miss - for a really small job (brake fluid) dealer insisted on a personal quote from indy with veh reg on it etc. They relented after I pointed out the price was also on their Web site

Other times they've done it with no quibble or just flat refused (tyres they're hopeless for and will only price match kwik fit)

Lol! That doesn't inspire confidence when they argue against their own pricing.
