IKEA Stolmen Furniture

We have a couple of IKEA Stolmen units and in her wisdom SWMBO has decided that we need to reconfigure the set up.
Of course this means that we need some extra parts and IKEA only stocks them in USA.
Tongue in cheek time.
I need
  1. one support pole (floor to ceiling)
  2. one cross rail (110cm)
  3. one shelf (110cm)
  4. and a few brackets
Anyone having some bits lying around?

Delboy 3rd April 2016 04:20 PM

Throw it all in the skip and do this instead :p

How much?

£995?!!

tc4332 4th April 2016 02:04 AM

Steve,
I only paid £150 for all that I have new from IKEA.
What I need would be £40 or £50.
I see on Fleebay a chap is offering something like ten times what I have for £900. Probably more than IKEA ever had?????
Probably works for Audi.

Come on, no one?

Looks like no one has the same bad taste as us :)

Unless you are all too ashamed to admit having bought some

Or so liking it you want to keep it

Ohhh, STOLMAN furniture, I thought you said STOLEN!! :D :p

Dezzy 4th April 2016 02:20 PM

I was just wondering, that you need to make sure if the floor to ceiling support pole is fixed properly Ray, i've see videos of those when it goes wrong or is it not one of those sort of poles.

I know, gas pipe and scaffold boards, do like the look though but would build it myself for a fraction of the price

tc4332 4th April 2016 03:08 PM

The support poles have flat plates at the top that ideally are screwed through the ceiling plaster into the ceiling joists. The base plate can be screwed to the floor.
As is usual things can only be as good as they are designed to be if used/fitted correctly.
SWMBO is always telling me that I over engineer whenever I do things. Where builders hammer nails in I screw.

As for self build, that is probably what we will have to do if nobody comes up with anything.

Key clamps and tube. Lots of fittings and tube size to select from and fairly cheap. Have built a few pieces of furniture in the past with good results.

Here's a part finished table

Great product for that stuff too, practically indestructible. +++

I bet your stuff doesn't normally fall off the wall though does it.

My motto is do it nice or do it twice

Indeed! That table had 48mm steel tube, needed two people to lift it +++

We built two identical with tempered glass tops. £150 each if I recall.

A lot of years ago, when we were still relatively young (honestly there was a time when even I was young) I had been away in Europe driving tour coaches for about eight weeks.
When I returned home SWMBO had decorated the bathroom. She had mounted two shelves which involved hammer drill into breeze block wall, rawplugging and screwing.
Those shelves are still on the wall. She takes them down for decorating and refits them.
She claims that she learnt how to do it from watching me.
Really good having a wife that can change fuses, the old type where you replace the wire, and she fits her own plugs safely

Careful Ray, you sound pretty close to surplus to requirements! ;)

My SWMBO won't even wash her own car!

tc4332 5th April 2016 07:30 AM

It is al down to training

Seriously, I know that I am lucky, and I have an unusual model with all the updates and mods factory fitted. She has all the good bits that none of her sisters have. But then her Mother was very good to me. +++:D:love:

I don't have to wash her either

That's no fun then! :)

tc4332 5th April 2016 07:48 AM

I have a reply ready but I'm afraid not fit for publication.
Something about using and cleaning

Ooooooops!! nearly said it.

oldnick 5th April 2016 11:10 AM

I presume you mean that the bits you want are unavailable i the UK as they still sell this system ~I think

have you tried the ikeahackers.net site?

tc4332 5th April 2016 02:42 PM

I have tried ikeahacks but withoutb any joy. They only show the ads from fleebay etc.
IKEA do not stock it in UK anymore, I have a friend that works for them, that was my first call. Plenty in the States, but for the couple of bits I want USA and fleebay are too expensive.
Looks like it will have to be a scaffolding pole job.

SilverS8 6th April 2016 06:20 PM

I see that they stock several Stol(m)en stuff at Ikea here in Norway

http://m.ikea.com/no/no/search/?quer...=1459966651625

:)

tc4332 6th April 2016 06:30 PM

Hi Silver,
Thanks.
I know that there is a large stock in USA and believe that it is available in Germany.
Problem is that management has decided that the changes have to made this weekend. So I am going to make what I need with a scaffolding pole.
I can always swap it with the correct pieces when I find them.

roberto 8th April 2016 09:55 AM

is it this stuff ?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ikea-Stolm...-/272189304945

tc4332 8th April 2016 10:07 AM

Yes Roberto.
I only want one support pole, one shelf, one railand a few brackets.
About £30 to £40 new.
I'm in the midst of gathering bits of scaffolding.
Tomorrow I'll make it 'cos management has decided that the units we have will be moved from one room to another, different setup and tomorrow or else.

mattylondon 8th April 2016 10:12 AM

Screwfix used to sell a modular floor to ceiling storage solution, similar to this...

http://www.spacepro.com/flex-storage-solutions/

That link goes to a US site, but with a bit of searching I'm sure it's available here.

Edit, UK site

tc4332 8th April 2016 08:29 PM

Thanks Matt,
Management has declared it a no-no. She says it is the wrong shape. Talk, about OCD.
I only sleep in the bedroom, nothing else is allowed, rules have been made, I do not care if it is odd colours, does not match. As long as my clothes hang OK, who cares about anything else . . . . Oh heck, Gwen does, what a bugger.

Delboy 8th April 2016 08:39 PM

There quite a few bits and pieces on gumtree and stuff on ebay

https://www.gumtree.com/for-sale/uk/stolmen

tc4332 8th April 2016 09:26 PM

Thanks Del.
We have seen al that is on offer.
Trouble is the distance to travel. And these poles would not fit into the car. OK for a mile or three but a three or four hour drive.

paulrstaylor 8th April 2016 09:30 PM

I've got some roof rails for a D3 you could borrow if that would help +++

tc4332 8th April 2016 10:15 PM

Paul, Thanks for the offer.
It is all time now, I have started to make my own adjustable pole.
All the other bits I need have been made or are nearly completed.
I'll keep my eyes open and if something local appears then I could always scrap my home made.

tc4332 12th April 2016 08:49 PM

Worked all day Saturday on the thing then at 19:15 urgent call out for a 21:00 Manchester to Stansted Airports. $ x cabin crew ladies and one co-pilot. Lovely bunch. Good journey apart from an accident northbound just past Keele services. Home for 04:30. Had a cuppa and hit the bed in the half finished bedroom.
Up at 09:00and finally finished for 23:00. Knackered.
Looking at it now I can only say, "Yep it looks good".
SWMBO is smiling.
