New Wheels

Hi. I've wanted some bigger wheels for a good while now, but nothing too in your faceor not OEM. Hoping bigger wheels will fill the arches and give better handling and turn in than the big 17" 55 profile balloons I currently have on the car. Just in the process of buying these:

For my D3. Am I right in thinking they're from a D4 and would fit the D3 with these:

Found this:

TIA. John.

Hi John, Yep correct I had to get similar spigot rings for some 19" D4 winter wheels I bought off of Duffy on here and put onto my D3, and the metal ones like you have located are better by far! +++

Johnmed 29th April 2016 01:05 PM

Cheers. They're the wheels I passed on. Ha. Thanks again.

Passed on? Hah! to quote - JohnMed: If these don't get snapped up in the next month or two I'll be (very) interested. :p :D

Seriously though they are good wheels I like how the ET looks on a D3 position wise, but I'd also love a set of what you bought too, they look great on D3 and D2's +++

Johnmed 29th April 2016 01:37 PM

I spoke with Duffy yeah. Almost gave him a deposit. But couldn't have bought them for a while, and he had others interested. So I told him to sell them, because he was willing to hold them for me. He was very decent about it. You got a good deal on them.

Got 'em. Feel a bit like a bling drug dealer with them!

Cheers mate. The spigot rings were a tight fit. Had to use fairy liquid and tap them in with a hammer. I like the drive with them on, not too harsh at all. Just a lot shinier and bigger than my previous wheels. And they stick out a bit more too, being 30 cm wider,...

I'm sure they'll grow on me.

tonupkid 4th May 2016 10:05 PM

If they do grow on you let me know, I'd like a set

255 45 19. Need to check my speedo to see if it's out.

Looks like 50, probably due to spoke design. Nice though.

Ha. Probably too posh for me. Until I kerb them :-(

audifin 6th May 2016 08:15 PM

Looking very good indeed. Out of curiosity how much did you pay for them? I might consider a set of these with the with the 45 profile tyre when my tyres will need replacing.

Are there any issues with using bigger circumference tyres? Obviously the speedo will show a bit less (probably correct reading :) But anything else to consider?

Johnmed 6th May 2016 08:40 PM

Hi Buddy. I know some people are precious about how much they pay for stuff, but I'm not TBH. These wheels were on eBay for £1000 with 2 Goodyear Eagles and 2 Pirelli P Zeros all 6mm. The chap, Julius, an automotive importer and I came to agree on £700, outside of eBay naturally. I think that's more than a fair price:)

I'd passed on some similar wheels (same size, from an S5) a week or two ago, the fella and I came to agree a figure of £400. When I saw them one tyre had a nail in the shoulder of the tyre and another's lacquer had begun to peel quite badly. So I passed. Given the cost of a 19" tyre. He sold them the next day (after they'd miraculously been fixed) for £545 on eBay.

Re: the speedo, I haven't GPS'd it yet, but I will this weekend and report back.

I've not had any other issue. The ride is better than I thought. Not harsher in any way, bit more precise on turn in. No rubbing etc on full lock or what have you. The ET I believe is only one mm different from the 17s I replaced, although the tyre width is 30mm greater.

All the best. John.

goldsax 7th May 2016 03:36 AM

the alloys look really nice, contrary to what i initially thought what they would look like on a D3.
i am glad you mentioned that with 255/45/19 the ride is not harsh,as i am changing mine from 255/40/19 to the ones you have for that reason.

Burnzybubbles 7th May 2016 10:12 AM

If calibration is the same as a PF car then your speedo will be Bob on, I run 255/45/19 and it's on the button with the speedo now.

Johnmed 7th May 2016 11:34 AM

That's encouraging. Cheers. I'll give the car a run tomorrow on the M'way.

Tested speedometer today at a range of speeds. And it is in fact spot on!

P.S. What tyre pressures do you run? I have them at 37f and 40r. Seemed close to the nearest size in the guide on the fuel filler cap. Seems a little skittish TBH

tc4332 10th May 2016 07:52 PM

I've just gone to 38 all round.
Was running 33 front and 30 rear as suggested by my tyre man.
Finding it a firmer ride but seems more sure footed. Went to Alrewas via the M6 Toll on Sunday and did a bit of heavy foot when the speed limiter was distracted. The temp rise lifted them to 41 at one point. It was a very hot day for here in the UK.

Cheers Ray. I think I may go down to 35 all round, see if I notice a difference. If not I may go to 38 all round too. The weather was great wasn't it, hard to imagine given the change today.

Very smart Ray!
Don't let the speed limiter get hold of those white gloves or she will start directing traffic as well! :tuttut:

Only joking, you do look very smart Ray! +++

What was the event, or is that your usual Sunday driving attire?

At fifteen I managed to gain a place at an Army Apprentices College and I have become Editor of our Old Boys Association magazine (for my sins).
There were four of these establishments, Arborfield, Carlisle, Chepstow and Harrogate. Main difference between them being the trades that they taught. I was at Chepstow, the camp is still there under the Severn/Wye Bridge but sadly the colleges are no more.
The four Old Boys Associations have joined together and funded an Army Apprentices Memorial at the The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. We now hold an annual memorial service there on the second Sunday in May.
Here is another photo that Gwen took.

When is the last time you had a proper 4 wheel alignment done? It could also be the tyres your running but I run 40psi all round and it runs straight and true at any speeds, even ones I can't talk about.
