Battery Drain (don't want to hijack Oli's thread)
Hi peeps,
I am aware that Oli has his own battery drain problem and I will be following some of the suggestions there so as to see if I can find problems on mine, but I didn't want to hijack his thread. Essentially over the last couple weeks I am getting the "Battery Low" warning and it says it will charge the car while driving, it never seems to charge it enough. I have put the car on my CTEK a few times, first to do a battery condition cycle, then after to charge, its actually charging now as she struggled to start this morning. I have had a few niggling errors so far come up, i.e., the boot wont open with the motor, sometimes wont close with it either, however, If I had been driving or the engine is running, it works absolutely fine, also the same after a battery charge. Which leads me to believe its battery related. I have also seen very intermittent adaptive lights errors and ESP errors, but each only once, which again makes me think its power related as they disappear after a run or a charge. This morning I turned the car on to see a new error on the dash, the yellow suspension level light, however, once the car went on the CTEK, the light disappeared. I suspect that my problem isn't a bad battery as I had it load tested by the auto electrician who was working on my track TT loom, and he tested the battery with a load and it stayed at 12.1v Being as all this is guesswork as I only found out this morning that my VCDS lite and dongle don't work on the S8, I haven't had to scan her for anything all year, but now I can't provide any scans - until tomorrow that is as I have just bought a full version from Gendan this morning, so I know I can scan it then and post up what it says. I will put the car into jacking mode when the battery is charged later and see what happens, anything else I can check at the moment before the tool arrives? Thanks |
Shouldn't the good condition battery read something like 12.6x Volts ??
12.1V seems a bit to low. Battery on the S8 had this sort of readings and I was experiencing similar issues so I got new VARTA battery and since then all problems has disappeared. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Varta-I1-V...YAAOSwojRYSoKQ Some D3s had issues with the battery management ECU which is in the boot by the wheel arch above the (-) terminal. Can't remember is software update solved was the way to go or just replacing it with a later part number module. How about changing the last digit of your battery serial number to make ECU think it's a brand new battery in case someone messed around while your car was off road with the gearbox issues for a while?? Unlikely, but worth a go if your battery is still original which means it is kind of due a replacement. And I say that because on the A8 I've had a good battery, no issue prior or warning light/errors etc and one morning battery has completely died, not even a drop of juice left to do anything and car was driven day before. |
Hi Marcin, thanks for the reply, I didn't know my car has been off the road with a gearbox issue? certainly not in the time I have had her, she's been good as gold - was this something that happened with a previous owner before I bought her?
Is there a way to find out if its the original battery? I've bookmarked that battery, I'll check out the voltage reading with VCDS when it comes and the battery is charged to get a proper accurate reading. Is there a guide anywhere on how to code a battery or change the number? quite new to VCDS aside from the usual clearing of DTCs on my TT Thanks |

Well, this is the original battery so I would start from changing the battery because when mine died one morning with no warning at all it was the day I really was in the rush and needed the car.
Yes, I have this battery fitted in my S8 at present +++ Same size, same spec apart more amps, 920 instead of 850. I fitted Bosch S5 to A8 and had no issue either, but this time I wanted same brand (Varta) for whatever reason which I can't explain :rolleyes: |
I have a varta AGM stop start battery of the largest size they do and it's been bulletproof.

IThis maybe worth a look before you change the battery , in battery regulation module find the s o c block ....state of charge just make a note of the battery charge percentage .
Then have a look at the alternator charge output in Amps , from memory engine running with no loads on its about 20 amps or so , fit and code the new battery in and do same tests . Parasitic drains can be hard to sort and sometimes tie you in knots , I find knowing how much is being drawn helps a little in understanding what it can be . I've found trying to use a multimeter in series with the battery heavy cables is hard , the surge up when trying to connect the meter often pops the multi meter fuse , just trying to lock the car pulls out alot of Amps ......how do the techs on here go about it ?? I use a shunt across the lead and ' tap up ' off that with a multimeter or use the pico scope low amps clamp and watch the draw wave form ,Roll the boot latch over and lock the car and watch as the amps reduce as modules go to sleep . So if you have some kind of amps draw it's a case of pulling fuses till you see the draw diminish .....some folk do voltage drop across fuses but you end up at the same result by pulling them . Thing is ....sometimes one fuse can be powering a system that has a lot of power consumers on it so you still haven't narrowed all the way down when you pull the fuse and see the amps draw go . My own car had an issue while back flagging quiescent current exceeded ....stage 1 .... stage 2 and so on whilst parked up over night , I left it at work hooked up to the pico on 20amp range clamp over a 24 hour time base and checked scope trace next day . Periodically it would pull out 9 amps tailing off to 4 amps for around a 6 minute slot , then go back to sleep ......it could do this 10 / 12 times throughout a 12 hour period , then in the morning I would get the battery low message when ignition turned on . Anyone one to have a pop at what it was ........ |

Yeah, I am hoping that its just a battery, but I have been aware that air suspension does cause hassles like this, I went out this morning and disconnected the CTEK as its fully charged the battery, so have put the car in LIFT mode to see what happens as it will visibly be easier to tell later if the car has dropped.
Interestingly, when I first turned her on the words SAFE came up in the binnacle where you trip distance would usually be, and a loud clicking with a light flicker inside the glovebox I turned her off, then on again, and both had gone and the car seemed normal once more. Hopefully the new battery and VCDS will be here before the light dies away and I can swap them over |

With car locked up for more than 15 mins or so ( better at night so you can see display around gear stick ) just press the outer door handle button and see if display around gear stick or hazard switch lights up ....and how long it stays lit up . Because even when they go back off the car is still drawing some current till it goes fully to sleep again |
Right, my VCDS finally arrived today - just managed to get outside in the pitch black and do a scan, almost wish I hadn't... looks like loads of errors!
I can see a lot are voltage related, so hope that the new battery solves that, will drop it in and code tomorrow, if not, it looks like it'll be something else. Some of the errors are a little concerning in that there was no CEL light on the dash, so how could it have engine errors and do that? This was from an auto scan, I also checked the individual modules for the Engine (which it read ok) and the gearbox (also) so don't know why they show as cannot be reached below? Did you scan without the ignition on as it looks like the drivetrain CAN isn't awake. There's not too much to worry about in your scan, nothing that would concern me. If you can do another scan tomorrow with ignition on were can see if the other modules have any faults logged.

When I replaced the battery in the RS6 a lot of stuff showing up in the scan went away afterwards, I do think a dying battery throws up a lot of strange errors+++

You don't need the serial number
Just change last digit of the existing serial number. There is no live database with which car or VCDS will check if serial number is valid. It's as simple as changing digits. Do a full scan with engine running after changing battery. Then go to each module individually and clear codes that way not in one go. Ignition off, lock the car wait couple of minutes Fire up the engine and do a full scan again. Battery on the last legs can cause even 10-15+ faults, even scary ones but that's where it ends. After clearing faults for the second time with new battery you'll be good to go. Only faults after that is what you should be concerned about. |

Remember to go to each module one by one after full scan and clear faults individually. Sometimes you've got to jump ahead a bit, if there is fault in ABS ECU reported in engine's ECU you will have to clear ABS faults first and then go back to engine's ECU to clear the message and ABS faults. So my errors having been through and checked the VCDS fault lists, are:
02272 - Quiescent Current Stage 1 (can't find anything for this) 02124 - Exterior Door Handle Switch (ditto) 02596 - Rear Brake Pads Worn (they look like loads of flesh is left, I think Duffy didn't adapt when he put new ones on) 02138 - Control Circuit for Front Right Interior Lights (all lights work?) 00065 - Rear Left Footwell Heater (Z42) & (Z43) - both register different voltages in freeze frame 00003 - Control Module (talk about vague) 00668 - Supply Voltage Terminal 30 (?) Incidentally, the low battery warning is now showing on the car again, which is odd if its a new, fully charged battery! |

02124 - Exterior Door Handle Switch I would have expected a short to ground if it were water ingress. Does the external lock button work? 02596 - Rear Brake Pads Worn Do the rear pad adaptation procedure as per Ross Tech instructions 02138 - Control Circuit for Front Right Interior Lights Not sure 00065 - Rear Left Footwell Heater (Z42) & (Z43) - There's currently another thread about these 00003 - Control Module I'd leave this for now as messing with coding / basic setting could put the control head in Component Protection. This module is the main brain of the MMI 00668 - Supply Voltage Terminal 30 Related to the 02272 - Quiescent Current Stage 1 All fine in my opinion. Is the brake pad wear indicator light on ? The quiescent current could just be while you been testing it ...ignition being in doesn't half pull out all lot of amps ...battery volts soon drops Take for a good run like Matty says then go into battery regulation think group 6 and look at s o c ...state of charge ...should be up to 100'% after half hour run . My car had the code for exterior door handle .....it was the cause of my battery going low over night |
First I would like to comment about old battery, the battery in pictures have warehouse picking slip label on it so it cannot be original battery from the factory as those labels are attached when dealer orders part from warehouse and would not be on factory battery.
As for the previous owner putting back old battery there are several possible scenarios. I am not going into much detail at this time but I am sure you can imagine most of them. In regards to electrician testing battery 12.1V seems very optimistic under load. How much load did he put on it? It's the kind of voltage you would see with engine off and lights on. Load testing should be at least 400A for this size of battery and even more. The voltage should be above 9.5V while cranking in most cases. My A6 drops to about 10.5V while glow plugs are on and to about 8.5V while cranking after preheat with a 4 years old battery which reports 60% health on conductance meter which recommends to replace battery. But overall there is more to battery testing, 3 main parameters are capacity, cold start amps and internal resistance. Cold start amps(load test) can be tested quickly but require specialist equipment and battery to be off car. There is no hand held load tester that can put 800A load on battery and dissipate heat and basic 100-200A load testers will not show true performance for batteries of this size. They are OK if you want to test you bike or 1.0 Corsa but will not tell much for big batteries. Capacity test is a bit long and would require draining battery with steady current over 20hrs, so for 100Ah battery you would put 5A load on it and measure the time it takes for voltage to drop belovw 11.9V or so. On a fresh battery it should be about 20hrs but if you get like half of that you can be sure it is duff. Conductance test does not give direct result in CCA or capacity but will give you a good idea in general battery condition and it is very quick. The new battery can also be duff if it has been sitting on the shelf too long and many of newer chemistry batteries require higher charging voltage, especially AGM batteries so if you fit advanced battery you might want to change voltage regulator on generator. I am happy to lend you my conductance tester if you want although it only goes for batteries up to 800CCA but still should give god indication. And finally I might be interested in you old battery if it is not too bad or too expensive. |
All is well with the world, the new battery has fixed my problems and the car starts on the button, quick scan and my errors have gone, no battery warning lights or anything.
I find it mental that a battery can cause so much havoc with the cars internal systems, it's just plain weird how it affected everything from internal lights to MMI, tyre pressure sensors and so on. Anyway, I wanted to wait a few days to make sure before saying thanks to all for your help in solving this, much appreciated! |

Last night coming back from Milton Keynes, I was talking to the missus about how good to car has been this year with no issues aside from the battery, lo and behold, by the time I got the the A5 roundabout some 4 miles away, the lights on the dash flickered, the clock said 00:00 and the car wouldn't come out of 6th gear. I managed to get home (thank god for having a big v10 up front as 6th gear was still fine to pull away in) but she wouldn't change, either by putting her into tiptronic, paddles, Sport, Dynamic or via Neutral. Once home I put her into park, then the selector and everything worked fine, gear changes were ok again - took her for a spin and silky smooth once more. Turned her off, plugged her in, no gearbox errors or engine errors and the like, what caused that? have I got a duff battery? I went into the boot to check the terminals were attached correctly (they were) and noticed that the side of the battery appeared to be a little wet, yet everything around the battery, trim and the top of the battery was dry - what was that all about? Any ideas anyone? I have had no battery warning lights, but she has been slow to start on these really super cold mornings (-4 yesterday) |
