Does anyone else tow with an A8.

Its very rare to see an A8 on a campsite so I was wondering how many out there have towbars and use them.

Johnmed 30th June 2017 08:29 PM

Yes mate. I prefer a modest hotel stay over a caravan site. But this summer we're touring France and Spain in the D3 with a 'van behind the thing. Nothing as fancy as yours, mind.

I have a removable hook on the S and fixed on the A. Tow all the time with my small box trailer, car trailer or horse box. Never used it for a van though. Have too much respect for other road users!:eek:

Dont worry we race solo cars not hold them up. Its fun when you beat a car away from the lights with a 2 ton chavavan on the back.

Yes we also tow a caravan 2009 Bessacarr, but also use Hotels as I'm a coach driver mainly 4 star.

If there's an award for the ricketiest, crumbliest and least safe trailer (it was a parting gift from neighbours), I'd like to think I would win.

Fella at the local tip thinks it's hilarious, 'nice big car like that, with a trailer like THAT'...

Now that fridge freezer doesnt look safe.

Maybe we should follow the vw guys lead and make trailers out of the rear end of scrapoed S8's 😀

Im also partial to a good hotel but the caravan gives us the chance to go every other weekend and to Europe for 6 -8 weeks a year and i couldnt afford to do that in Hotels. ( im not an S8 owner )

Got us home down the M6!

Not sure if anyone on here posts on Caravan Talk, but I read a post about someone with a A8 and having a reverse camera, which I thought there is someone else with one who tows a caravan. Its nice to see, at the early part of the year I stayed on Clumber park for 3 months, and never saw another.

In my job you don't get much time off at weekends, so our usage really doesn't justify the amount it costs, which is a shame.
The tours that I do include my hotel room and meals, the job doesn't pay well for me to stay there on holiday.

27litres 2nd July 2017 10:39 AM

I don't tow a caravan, but often tow my utility 6x4 with the S8.
Also pulled a few cars and vans (Toyota Hiace type van, not 'cara' van :D) up our driveway with it!

steamship 2nd July 2017 12:13 PM

A bit like 27litres, I'd tow a 6x4 trailer. I was towing either trailer loads of concrete 10 miles to dispose of as infill or trailer loads of soil and rubble to a building site my nephew was working on. Neither was a suitable place for an A8 to be, but it didn't have any issues at all.

27litres 2nd July 2017 12:45 PM

They make a great tow vehicle, very stable, very fast, great tow capacity.
Even with this load I was out accelerating cars on the highway!

That's cheating, having an engine in the trailer as well. :D

Not sure I got a photo of it, but MJ's '8 towing a dead FE S8 on a big trailer is an awesome sight. +++

At Last!

Woah!

I love reading the posts from Forum users who have their inlet tracts deep-cleaned, have a graduated set of tooth brushes to clean their engines and run ONLY on Shell SupEr Dear...

But a caravan thread would suit me well!

I could have done that, but it just seemed silly to use my mates truck to haul the engine!

Though I stil hold my ful PCV my touring days on the coaches are way back in the past. I know things are a lot different now than in my time but I was able to become personal family friends with most of the hoteliers that I used. This has continued to the current time and now we are often invited to family occasions throughout the continent. Lovely really, we only have travel costs, accomodation is thrown in, usually the kids or even grandkids have taken over the business and I used to play with them as babies. I suppose it was mainly due to me doing it for many years and visiting the same hotels many times.

clubadria 8th July 2017 01:42 PM

Hello Ray

I thought that you were a driver from previous posts, I haven't been to that family run ones many times, the two that come to mind is St Agnes Rosemundy and one in Blankenburg.

It must be very rewarding to still be invited back a true professional, and credit to you.

Thanks for that.
I was invited to a wedding in Valkenburg (just outside Maastricht last October) when the daughter of one of my hoteliers was finally getting hitched at 40 years young. She's a majistrate in Maastricht now but as a little one I often dangled her and her cousin (her cousin is a Dutch MP and was the Dutch Transport Minister).
I am getting a bit long in the tooth now.
St Agnes has some very pleasant memories'
Is Blankenburg in Germany near Goslar or the one in Berlin? Know both of them quite well. Or do you mean Blankenberge on the Belgian coast? Well known for the lace making.

A lovely area, we have stayed there and really enjoyed it. We have dragged or shed over alot of Europe camping and love it.

Sorry my spelling mistake, the one on the Belgian coast.

David

Simonbartlett 10th July 2017 05:24 PM

We often stay at De Hann near Blankenburg . Its a good stopover on the way to Holland or Germany. A lovely area and only an hour from Calais. We did a run in the A8 to De Hann last week but with no caravan 😁

tc4332 14th July 2017 09:41 AM

I must bore you.
I must not brag about my knowledge of the area.

Oh bugger it!!!
"In my coaching days" (not horse and cart type) I must have stayed on the Belgian coast many hundreds of times, usually 5 to 7 day long visits. Anyone remember "Meli Park"?
And of course do not forget the overnight booze cruises, land at Calais and return from Ostend to Felixstowe to avoid Dover Customs.
