2006 4.2 tdI rear disk rear pads front pads:questions
need some advice please
called an Audi indie yesterday re. cost of F/R pads only replacement. they said that the rear disks were lipped and would also need to be changed. total cost £780 to me that sounds a lot. i am aware that the 4.2TDi has larger disks and pads. looking at ebay and eurocarparts they have varing sizes. and the process also will need VAGCOM for rear reset. any idea what size ( parts) i need? any idea where a VAGCOm competent garage/indie/person may be able to do it? does it have to be Audi? can a VW garage do it. i hope i dont come across as trying to work to an unrealistically small budget. but £780 is a lot of money esp when i can buy quality parts for approx £350( i presume) I am in Leicestershire many thanks raj |
The only way to tell what parts you need is to check the 3 digit PR codes in your build stickers (wheel well, service book)
1LL, 1LK, 1KW etc.. Eurocarparts often lists these in the description. Once you know, you can cross-reference part numbers and find cheaper from motor factors (such as premier factors) on ebay. Eurocarparts discs and pads are not a good price for our cars. |
many thanks for your quick reply.
my code is 1LL as you said, some parts form ECP state the PR codes. thanks for the info. raj |
Wow, so that's £780 for front pads and rear pads + dics? Does seem expensive to me, I guess the Garage has got to make a profit. But jobs like this you can do yourself with VCDS.
1LL refers to the front discs, 360mm, if you have them you should have 1KW which is 310mm rears. |
Mine is 1LL and 1KW.
For my fronts 1LL branded parts start at ~£150 inc. optional fluid, clips, screws and sundries. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391085697984 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231803848030 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311880121080 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351542207260 Rears, I can't find the invoice. For reference, Audi dealer quoted me £1700 to do pads and discs all round at the MOT last month. |
thanks Matt.
yes i can see code 1KW on the build sheet this cannot be correct ... pagid/febi/brembo parts front pads code 1LL rear pads code 1KW rear disk code 1KW totals approx £150 !!!! so the rest is labour!!!! i can do the front pads, its the rear ones. any idea what the book time would be? thanks again for your help. |
I am sure they quoted you for discs and pads!!

I am not sure if the Mintex have the coating and I would prefer ones that have this. |
Zimmerman are good too as they come coated. My friend Marcin recommended them.

Would skimming the discs be an option to remove the lip ?
I've never had it done but I saw a garage recently advertising "insitu disc skimming. I have also had some eyewatering quotes over the years for pads/discs too from my local Dealer on a D3 & D4. Ask for the part no.s to be put on the estimate and a few minutes on eBay will tell you what's what. Discs don't seem to last like they used to. |
Skimming the lip off the discs is plausible. I'd ask Audi for the measured thickness against the minimum allowable thickness to see how deep the lip is. If it's got plenty of 'meat' left, you could skim them. Generally an hours labour per axle.

update:
front pads, rear pads, rear disk, all pagid branded. fitted by a local garage that had the equipment to relax rear calipers to wind them in. they said it was a 1.5 hour job cost : £230 parts/labour/vat included !!!!! how can an Audi indie quote £750+ and a dealership even more. thanks all for informing me how to read the relevent bits on the buildsheet. cheers raj |
Are you sure they were Pajid? Very cheap man!
|
i was going to order the parts myself: pagid parts come to £142 +£10 delivary.
but for my DB9 the rear pagid pads alone were £170 !!! |
