Can anyone shed any light on these codes ?
Didn't intend to make my first post with new ride a question about a problem but then thats how it often is i suppose !
Just purchased A D3 S8 which is (obviously :D )fantastic...except the dreaded EML light has come on twice within the first 6 days of ownership. Turned off light 1st time round in case it was somehow spurious but has come on again today so obviously an underlying problem. The codes are P1497 and P0491 both say "secondary air injection system insufficient air flow " on banks 1 and 2 respectively. Can anyone shed any light on these ? Is it likely to be the secondary air pump/ leaking pipe etc? Does it sound expensive !!! Any help be greatly apreciated +++ |
Congrats on the car, pics are a must if you haven't already.
As to your problems, it could be a few things, and VCDS is a must to help you diagnose. If you don't have the manuals then get saving from here If you have VCDS do output tests to see if the secondary air pump is running. If it is then i'd start looking at the combi valves which are vacuum operated to allow the secondary flow into exhaust. |

Manual 11 has most of the info on secondary air
Also if your using vcds you'll find the label files I made useful for the v10. See attached file here and unzip it into the user folder of vcds to have them available when you run vcds |
Many thanks Del, sadly i do not posses a VCDS. Anyone local ? I am in West Lancs (Ormskirk..) Beer tokens are a given ! Or a 'local' specialist ?
|
I presume i will be ok to still use the car pending a fix ?
|
Being as it's part of the warm up I would say it will be ok.

I'm in Warrington, well, will be early September. I have hooky VCDS, and will happily have a go, but my A8's engine module isn't accessible with my dodge lead, so couldn't guarantee it would access yours.
I would imagine Ray (tc4332) could help you out, he's in Wigan and is an awfully nice chap with legit VCDS. John. |
Appreciate the thoughts John, its this sort of help that makes this forum one of the better ones out there. I have actually got the car booked in on Monday at an Audi garage (S & R Miller anyone ??) in Wigan, hopefully a reasonable fix
I will update the thread though for info purposes. |
Sorry Guys.
I meant to stick my oar in on this and then forgot whilst nursing the new grandson. John is correct about being in Wigan but I doubt that I'm "an awfully nice chap". I do not have any personal knowledge on S & R Miller. I know that they are in Standish. I'd be happy to plug into your car if you want. We live in the Poolstock area. |
Go to a tuner (i can recommend big fish) and get the secondary air system disabled and fault codes deactivated. You can even remove the whole system. You can buy the requires block off plates from the USA.
|
Interesting....whereabouts are they based ?
|
Found them, bit of a stretch to be fair. Is this something any tuner should be able to do ?
Might be an option if the 'proper' fix proves to be mega expensive ! Anyone know a decent tuner nearer to west Lancs ? |
Just had the S8 returned from S&R Audi...turned out it was 'only' a vacuum hose so happy days ! Really good bloke as it happens will be my go to man.
|
Well done.
Enjoy the ride now. |
Thanks.i already was enjoying it,great drive. I am however a fussy old bugger so the car is going to 'my' paint guy tomorrow to get it to what i call 'good' condition.
Then i will feel happy to post up some pics ! |
why not bring it along to our regional meet at "the carding shed" near Holmfirth on Sunday next weekend? hopefully there will be a few there to catch up with and talk much in the way of car b*ll*cks :D
See thread in meets section +++ |
will take a look, thanks for the heads up ....got to replace the now apparently leaking alternator first though !!
