Well done that man! Are you going to bring it along to the annual meet? Would love to see it. +++

awolfinsheepsclothes 15th October 2017 04:07 PM

i'll have to see with work being so busy, i'll be going to the leopard at christmas if thats oaths year. I've been looking at the more technical side of the forum I'm afraid and neglected the social.

This is now officially the best video on YouTube, said the fellow D2 owner. Well done that man.

Congratulations on a world first +++

:mexicanwave:

:cheers:

David's8 15th October 2017 05:18 PM

No hard feelings MJ? :-(

MikkiJayne 15th October 2017 07:32 PM

Not at all. Its a great achievement +++ Dave's conversion has required much more engineering than mine for the 0A3 gearbox, and we've both taken completely different routes to get a clutch pedal in there.

It is quite funny that there have been no RHD manuals for 23 years and then two come along within a couple of months of each other :ROFL: Three if you count the Irish TDI, which technically was the first we know of albeit quite strangely executed.

tintin 15th October 2017 10:02 PM

Jealous. ;)

27litres 16th October 2017 10:53 AM

How difficult was this again :Confused:
I'd love to do this conversion...
:pint::pint::pint::pint:
Should I...
:pint::pint::pint::pint::pint::pint:
Maybe I could...
:cheers:

Really interesting stuff. +++

It sounds like the two (or more?) main engineering leaders here should discuss the options and give an outline explanation for others of the choices made/available and factors applying to each.

Perhaps an evening presentation and discussion at the Annual meet?

Sounds like a cooler classification/title than "Senior Member" to me... :-(

awolfinsheepsclothes 16th October 2017 06:56 PM

thanks i did do a few more video's but i don't want to put anything on that incriminates me. Dave

tintin 16th October 2017 07:12 PM

I'm not sure how you could be incriminating yourself - it's just really interesting to see (and hear!) an S8 being driven properly. Not sure I want to wait for a Christmas meeting - maybe we have a little NorthWest one in the meantime? ;)

Goran 16th October 2017 07:19 PM

Congratulations!
Huge respect +++
Cant wait to see it. Shifts look/sound very smooth.
How are you finding it, big change from the auto? noticeably quicker?
Yours must be the quickest NA one now, lightest gearbox, and some scary gear ratios :D

Regulus 16th October 2017 10:24 PM

Amazing, well done +++

Making gear shifts at 2000 rpm, cool.
Was the speedometer input from the central transfer case? I noticed that didn't give any reading.

I should have investigated this, as I had to replace the central transfer case on my -98 Grand Cherokee. And now it seems the reading is almost 20% higher than the actual speed at 100 km/h (62mph), showing ≈120 km/h.

It’s not bad Goran I did a couple of runs none where perfect and I had a full fuel & lpg tank under 5.5 is definitely possible. If everything was perfect on a sticky drag strip and fitted lunch control I think it could go under 5 second. But I don’t think it’s that important and I don’t want to be dropping the clutch at 7000 rpm in my own car. If someone want to lend me there car I can do full throttle gear shifts too. I just did a nice consistent 2000 rpm clutch dump that I can reproduce that’s not to had on my new clutch. Speedo output hasn’t been even started yet and I wouldn’t want it on a YouTube video.
Dave

Goran 18th October 2017 08:31 AM

Very nice. Yes I completely agree, I am not about to abuse my car to get a low 0-60 time.
I cant wait to see it in person, very interested to see how you designed the clutch pedal arrangement.
Enjoy!

awolfinsheepsclothes 18th October 2017 10:27 AM

Yes Stephen we will have 2 sort something out I was trying to make it to the Oil can cafe but I was to slow. The pictures of the pedal are on my new knob thread basically I put a new pivot on the bottom mounting hole and the master cylinder is getting pushed towards you. I did have serveral other solutions but some are complicated this was easy to do and cheapest for anybody else wanting to do it.

Excellent work! ++++++

Looking forward to seeing it.

Also wondering what "lunch control" is :ROFL:

Is it some kind of weight-saving device? ;)

awolfinsheepsclothes 18th October 2017 12:08 PM

Sorry everything has a food theme with me!
I was riding down the canal on my bike replying on my phone! So didn’t even read it.

I hope you're a good swimmer! :eek:

MikkiJayne 18th October 2017 02:10 PM

I used to do 3000rpm clutch-dump starts in my A6q when I was hillclimbing it. Thats essentially the exact same drivetrain as the factory S8 manual, and it took 210 diesel HP and 400 torques like a champ. I had to turn the ESP off though to allow it to light up the rear wheels :D It wasn't very quick up the hill, but it was impressive off the line :ROFL:

I reckon there's a good chance the S8 manual I'm about to build will get some serious stick once the clutch is bedded in nicely. If not, I'm entirely prepared to try it on my own car when I get round to converting that ;) Certainly I'll be trying it in the FE biturbo which will definitely highlight any weak points...

awolfinsheepsclothes 20th October 2017 08:16 PM

I tried a couple of 2000-3000rpm starts last night in the rain, I think the clutch hasn’t bedded in fully yet or it’s not upto the abuse I can give it. I couldn’t wheelspin it! The clutch did slip! I was amazed how much grip the pilot sport 4s gave in the rain on 2 different roads. Maybe more revs would have shocked them loose! I was just trying to assess how the esp was behaving with ATB centre diff of the RS4 box,

Cool +++

I assume that by having 6 gears, the ratios are such that changes are shorter and more frequent than the auto. What kind of speeds are you reaching in 1st and 2nd before changing up?

gninnam 21st October 2017 09:46 AM

Brilliant work with the gearbox change and loving the sound from the zorst when you floored it in the last video +++

awolfinsheepsclothes 21st October 2017 04:43 PM

Hi i think it was 37mph on the limiter (vbox gps) in first yes they are closer i might might try again later, And see if i can get it on the scales when I've burnt of some fuel off

notorious 21st October 2017 08:51 PM

Amazing.
Would be great to look at pictures how you managed to fit clutch in that tight footwell.
Hope to see the car in flesh in one owner meets.

awolfinsheepsclothes 22nd October 2017 06:03 PM

Hi Goran the gear chart indicates at 7000rpm
1st 36.9
2nd 61.1
3rd 88.9
4th 119.3
5th 147.1
6th 173.8
3000 is 74.5 on the motorway
so first 3 are lower
4th is now a usable gear with good acceleration
5th is almost the same as 4th in the auto
and 6 has a slightly lower top end
but the biggest jump is 30mph 3-4 in the auto its 50mph!

Goran 22nd October 2017 08:44 PM

That was Mark's question.
The 0A2 ratios are a lot better than the 01E S8 box which is a lot lazier.
For comparison 01E first two gears redline at following speeds, they are very far apart and the 2nd gear especially is not very useful.
1st 39mph
2nd 70mph

I cant remember the rest I would have to look.
So Dave's car should be quicker, closer box, higher ratio 1st and 2nd, probably 3rd and 4th too. As well as being a much smoother modern gearbox, lighter too.

awolfinsheepsclothes 22nd October 2017 09:19 PM

Sorry, so it was, I was to busy trying to make sure all the details where correct

briang9 22nd October 2017 09:43 PM

Great work Dave, well done, hope to see it (and you too) at a meet soon+++

RS6 15th November 2017 09:33 PM

Very impressive work +++ hats off to you

most of us baby our chocolate boxes around, good to see the car being driven properly +++

can i join the list for a manual conversion please :love:
