First problem! Door handle

Hi all

As the temp have dropped, it seems my drivers door refuses to open from the outside.

The keyless system was a little odd in behaviour thinking back, in that I often had to actually pull the handle a little before recognition, whereas the other doors work with just proximity or the lightest of touches.

Now its just dead until the car has been driven a while, then it seems to work OK. I haven't yet checked for codes but will tonight or tomorrow.

I am likely stuck with stripping the door down and fitting a new handle or can copious contact cleaner / WD40 fix w temperamental one?

And where is the best source for one?

Thanks.

It may be that the colder weather is highlighting a poor battery.

I am aware that some of the electrical ‘luxury’ features (auto boot, softclose etc) are the first to be restricted to preserve battery energy when the battery is dying, often discovered at first unlock in the morning, especially after a couple of days of inactivity.

Also I believe that locking/unlocking via the key rather than the door handles prevents additional drain if you have an existing faulty handle(s).

Doesn’t completely solve the door handle issue but a frequent squirt of GT-85 does sometimes help, in the short term.

Thanks

Its only the drivers door and it wont unlock with the fob either. All other doors OK including the buttons seem ok.

Got these codes from a quick scan just a few mins ago, but will try to scan again tomorrow as I have clearded them now and need to have a drive:

I'm having a similar problem where my driver door doesn't unlock when you touch it..all other doors seem to work fine.

Because the locking switch isn't working on the handle either, I'll be changing it with a brand new one which i got from TPS for £96. I painted the base coat myself and paid a local reputable bodyshop £20 for them to apply the clear coat lacquer.

I'll take some pictures of the process and post soon.

Please take pics for us Learners neeldub of the whole process+++

I ordered from these guys:

http://tps.trade/

Part numbers are as follows:

Driver Side Door: 4E2837206G GRU
All Other Doors: 4E0839205G GRU

TPS can offer you slightly cheaper prices than main dealerships...in some cases you may even be able to open an account with them for significant discount on service items.. best to check with them how this can be done and the requirements..

Hope this information helps you all.

I can report that the repairs i did were successful and the door handle and electronics are all working 100%.

Not sure buddy but you have to ask them.

Usually if you are a mechanic or have an automotive business. Maybe all you need is a vat registration number and a company name

Well because I've done it a few times now I know my exact way around and how to do it properly..so it took me about 1hr30mins from start to finish.

Might take you longer if you take time to explore the door mechanism and just getting to know your way around..

I would rate it 4 out of 5 and I strongly suggest you get some new door clips just in case you break the old ones.

I need a new drivers door handle, I was thinking of fitting it then getting my smart repair man to spray it in situ. Is that a bad idea ?

It's best to get it done before fitting to the car.. makes everything much easier in my opinion. Otherwise you'd need to mask off a good portion of the car which will be time and cost consuming.

neeldub 15th November 2017 10:33 PM

I've noticed that the electronics in my car are working much better now. Before, the battery was always discharging to the lowest level but since changing the handle, it's always holding a full charge.

Ahh nice one mate.. anytime you'd like to work on the car give me a shout.. I'm in tottenham. I also have ODIS software for diagnosis which can work slightly better than VCDS for certain tasks.

I'm afraid not.. I steer clear of brake, engine and gearbox related work.. I prefer leaving that to the professionals as I don't have much experience working with them.
