On the look for D3
Hi guys,
Im on the hunt for a D3 diesel Could anyone throw there eye over this one and let me know what you all think money wise etc all advice greatly appreciated Im based in Northern Ireland so would have to travel so dont want do the run for a lemon Thanks guys https://www.gumtree.com/p/audi/audi-...le-/1281831793 |
Looks decent for the money but I would have a good look at the service history before parting with cash. Wheels are nice but could be replicas from China.
It might be worth looking at finding a D3 in the South. They're not very plentiful but you save the cost of a flight & a ferry crossing. There is a VRT rebate available for permanent export. They're hard to shift because of the €1454 Annual motor tax on a pre 2008 3.0TDI. |
thanks m8 have looked at southern ones just not sure how hard it is to import back to the uk from the state but def a good idea thanks
|
Not one for black-on-black cars, but it looks clean enough. However, the state of the ad would put me off straight away regardless of colour. Highlighter pen at the ready...
Just checked the VRT Calculator and it gives an estimate of 900+ euros for a 2007 3.0TDi. As Joe says above, could save you the cost of a flight and a ferry, and you get a rebate as well. |
As far as I know, the VRT rebate is issued to the original ROI owner of the car after the paperwork is processed to prove the car has been registered abroad. You would need to arrange this with the seller in your case. It may take a few weeks. Most Traders are familiar with the process as a lot of hi-end cars and large 4x4's exported in the last 2-3 years have availed of this scheme.
A lot of D3's in the South would originally have come from the UK and would have speedo clocks in miles rather than Km like this one; https://www.donedeal.ie/view/16969481 QUICK SALE Audi A8 LWB Quattro 4.2 TDI |
Cheers lads
Ive a friend in the south so in theory could i purchase that car and have it registered in his name and then transfer it to ni plates and my m8 would get the rebate? |
Yes, that would work if you don't mind the hassle.
The VRT rebate is repayable to the Current registered owner of the car at the time of export. The car has to be presented to an NCT Centre for an appraisal prior to export which costs about €38. You then have 30 days to export it. VRT rebate takes 4-5 weeks to process typically. It might be easier to buy from a trader and let them sort it. |

Back on topic..said this before but you could try and locate a decent Indie specialist local to where the car is and get them to check it first, might cost you £100 or so, but saves you travelling if its clearly a dog. It may be just me but when I have bought cars in the past for my boys nearly everything I looked at on Gumtree was shockingly bad, maybe a bit of a sweeping statement but I would look at other more respected selling sites IMHO |

Thanks guys
hesitant about buy off the likes of gumtree but cant seem to find many anywhere else in budget/spec All so the ones on gumtree all seem to be Romanian owners? |
I wouldn’t even look at adverts on Gumtree, never mind buy one of the cars. I didn’t bother clicking the link as it’ll either be junk or a Barry boy car, stick to piston heads or auto trader, even eBay cars are mostly junk these days
|
cheers everyone for the advice i think im going to go down the southern ireland route and import it back to uk and claim the rebate
|
can anyone cast there eye of the pics in this ad and possibly make out if its good spec or not chatting to the seller at the minute thanks once again everyone

Not one for spotting the details on car, but did notice that at least it is a UK spec model, since it has the MPH/KPH speedo.
Sir Alex must have found running the A8 W12 too expensive and switched to the 4.2 TDI. |
yeah handy being uk/mph speedo dont need to change the dials when it returns to the uk
|
I always thought used cars in Southern Ireland were more expensive than the UK, maybe it's different for less popular cars like the 8. Will you not have to pay import duty to the UK? I had to look into this a while back when importing my wife's car, but as she already owned it there was no charge to import.
|
yeah cars with big engines aren't popular here due to the car tax rules, a pre 08 car with a 3.0 engine or more is €1809 a year to tax
shouldn't have any import taxes as the car was originally first registered in the uk its how i got my current lexus gs450h |
It's definitely an imported car from the UK, (the high numbers on the reg give it away) but thats an advantage for you.
Verify with the seller or Revenue in the South that VRT was paid when it was imported to ensure it's eligible for a VRT rebate after export to the North. (Sometimes VRT is not paid if the owner was moving permanently from UK to IRL or if the owner was a Disabled Driver, unlikely but worth checking) In terms of spec, it's nothing special. It has upgrade alloys known as "fat fives", Bose and upgrade seats at first glance. On a high end car thats 10+ years old, less toys can mean less to go wrong. The rear inner lights look like they may have water ingress, not a deal breaker but might help to haggle a bit on price. Donedeal can be a bit of a minefield, not unlike Gumtree in UK. Buyer Beware etc. For about €30, Motorcheck or Cartell may be useful to check for Finance owing, previous write offs etc. |
Cheers m8 noticed the lights myself and must check out if VRT was paid great advice
|
You're welcome, it's worth a bit of effort to find a good one.
This one is a bit more expensive but it's a facelift with less miles and is being sold by an independent dealer with a good reputation, option of warranty etc. Might be movement on the price as he's had it for a while too. The clocks could be in Km but a used cluster and a bit of coding wouldn't cost a fortune. It should have a VRT rebate of about €2500 for export. http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/audi...14622947368910 |
There is also this one in Galway as well for 4,999 euro:
https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/aud...86237756418671 It's a 4.2 TDI with 170k miles. It has B&O and a rather weird and tatty steering wheel. The owner also seems to have bought a job lot of what look like S-line badges. It's also been for sale for at least 39 days. |
It's likely to be on sale for quite a bit.
Looks pretty uncared for judging by the steering wheel and the armrest isn't much better. If it looks that bad in the photos, it'll be worse in the flesh. The Seller didn't even bother to wash it before taking photos for the ad. |
yeah m8 thinking the same myself and doesnt reply to any messages i think wide berth required for that one search goes one ;)

cheers m8 keep them coming if you spot any around that price only big requirement is a black interior as my lexus gd450h has a light interior and makes keeping mats and carpets clean hard with 2 young boys |
I searched for a black or grey interior last time I was on the hunt for an early D4, ended up with cream/ivory as the car was right in every other respect.
I bought a full set of genuine carpet mats in black, no regrets. |
understand that just the lexus which im keeping is cream just fancied black this time
cheers once again for the advice and help |
What's the maximum you want to spend? Only asking as found one with a black interior for £5,200, in Maghera. Black on black, 2006, 124k. Link to it is as follows:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...ke=AUDI&page=1 Also, black on silver, 2005, 116k, LWB, £4,750. Located in Bangor: https://www.usedcarsni.com/2005-Audi...t-18-183307278 |
Here's another one for you, a 4.2TDI in black on black.
It has Bose, Sunroof and very small miles if it's genuine. https://www.donedeal.ie/view/17921204 |
thats very nice thanks bud price nit too bad either

That's what I thought.
€2200 or so of a VRT rebate if it qualifies would make it a cheap car. |
yeah m8 unbelievable cars for the money if you get the right one that has paid the vrt 5k car ends up 3k
|
Annual road tax of €1809 just kills the resale value on them.
You can quickly get to the stage where a combination of road tax, a set of tyres and a service cost more than the car is worth. |
