I got another red one today

1 Attachment(s)
.After 3 visits to the North West over the last 2 weeks, I finally drove this down the M6 today.
It's been discussed before in an old thread from last year:
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=13247

and a more recent one from this year:
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=14091

It's a very nice FE with a relatively limited spec in terms of add-on goodies but apart from a few stone chips to the front (which I will be rectifying soon), it's in immaculate condition. The platinum interior, with myrtle wood, is as close to new as you could expect. I aim to bring her to the annual meet instead of Big Red as Big Red is destined for a new home. I don't plan to keep both of them. :)
Here's a photo I've just taken but when I get a moment to take some more I'll add them to this thread for those that are interested. Edit: more photos on page 2

Very, very nice!

Congratulations Dean +++

Davey Blueeyes 10th May 2018 04:30 PM

Congrats Dean! Got your red one! Well done old chap.

Looks lubberly!

richardracer 10th May 2018 05:30 PM

Big Red?

Are you able to tell us where Big Red is going next?

HPsauce 10th May 2018 05:39 PM

My money is on somewhere in Devon..... :ROFL:

Adrian E 10th May 2018 05:50 PM

Many congrats - looks well, that does!

Can I spot a Milltek on her too? Doesn't look like a standard S8 exhaust

Congrats Dean +++

Now you have the S8 home, are they the same colour? In theory Big Red should be a bit more orange.

briang9 10th May 2018 06:16 PM

Lovely car, congrats+++

RICKY D 10th May 2018 06:35 PM

Wow! You've got a keen eye, Adrian. Can you spot that it doesn't have the latest Sat Nav disk either? ;)
It is a non-stock exhaust but I am not sure which. The hanging mechanism is doing its job at the rear but I don't like the look of the way its mounted like that.
For those that like the V8 burble droning on inside the car (or outside for that matter) then this exhaust sounds great without its silencer/muffler, but I prefer a more muted tone. This is my first A8 with double glazing acoustic glass and I'm not getting the benefit. So the exhaust is something that might be changed.
Here are a few shots of it:

Cheers. The colour difference is definitely noticeable between the Misano and the Tornado but to me, the Tornado on Big Red appears to be a shade darker when I was photographing it. But then there was a bit more sunlight on the S8 at the time.
My Samsung phone oversaturates colours like all Samsung phones so you'll probably not get the true impression of the cars from the following shots. But you will notice what I mean when you see them both together (sorry that I didn't have time to wash Big Red before these photos were taken so she looks a bit dusty with the pollen in the air around here):

And finally, whilst driving to the park to take these shots, I saw my first "Spotted on Tarmac" S8 PF. It was Ainars S8 being driven by, I assume, Lady Ainars. The car looked very nice too.

MikkiJayne 10th May 2018 07:45 PM

Those are two damn good looking 8s! :love:

That's definitely not a Milltek exhaust. No wonder you don't like it! I would expect that to sound much the same as the one we took off Big Red, ie pretty annoying. It'd probably work quite well with a pair of rotary mufflers though :ROFL: I have a couple of original S8 exhausts so I'm sure we can sort something a bit quieter +++

David's8 10th May 2018 07:52 PM

Looks good! Just keep the pair, go on!
Have you booked it into MJs workshop yet?

Strange how both red cars had stainless aftermarket exhausts, with no back boxes and were too loud for my old ears. This one does sound a lot better than the other one that was on Big Red though.

And yes, I'm sure that a trip down to Devon would help resolve an issue or two as per David's8 suggestion +++ :D

Adrian E 10th May 2018 09:20 PM

I'm not surprised that's bloody loud without much in the way of silencer boxes in evidence lol

The standard tailpipes look a little weedy to me and the Milltek had the right balance of a little more purposeful sound than stock, without droning excessively.

That looks to be only silenced by the cats, unless I'm not seeing the mid box? Quite like the tailpipe design but that needs a couple of decent sized silencers inserting to make it bearable I suspect.

Interesting, I just showed Beverley the side-by-side pictures and she immediately said "that one is more Orange!" yet I couldn't tell.

Stunning pictures by the way.

pete-p 11th May 2018 08:10 AM

A lovely pair of 8s there. +++

barzya8 11th May 2018 08:27 AM

Well done Dean.
Great news that you got the S8. Been thinking about it since our chat at Beaulieu. Great photos of the two cars together.
keep Big Red for everyday use and use the S8 for special occasions, thus keeping the mileage down and the value up.
I am sure you will love the S8 performance and presence.
Happy days
David:D+++:cool:

Regulus 11th May 2018 08:39 AM

Congratulations Dean
You have been really lucky to find another red. A very nice upgrade +++

Do the steering wheels have slightly different shapes? In addition to the colours?

Architex_mA8tey 11th May 2018 08:53 AM

Stunning pictures, and congratulations!

That's a sight you don't see too often and they are a real pair of head turners!
I'd be sooo tempted to keep both too if it was me! :D

steamship 11th May 2018 10:57 AM

Congratulations Dean. Are you planning on forming your own version of the Red Arrows now you have 'Red Leader' and 'Red 2'? As others have said, keep them both.

briang9 11th May 2018 03:40 PM

I think you should keep them both too if you can+++

The_Laird 11th May 2018 04:57 PM

Just an OCD comment on the leather colour in case you go to Woolies for their leather renovation kit - if it’s an FE, the leather isn’t platinum, it’s silver grey. Mackies have both on file; platinum from Sergey and Sliver Grey from me. Lovely car BTW :)

moltuae 11th May 2018 04:59 PM

Big Red's more powerful brother will need a name. Bad Red perhaps?

Have you got your leather care and gearbox service folks mixed up?:Confused:

tintin 11th May 2018 11:52 PM

Gosh. Just catching up. 2 lovely red '8s. Keep them both - I would +++

Ameiseuk 12th May 2018 02:02 PM

'Red 2'???

Lovely cars!

RS6 12th May 2018 11:38 PM

Looking good! how much did you pay in the end if you don't mind me asking?

At beaulieu i thought your current A8 was already an S8!

Lovely example very immaculate! +++

Dean, loving the photos of the pair of red D2's. Congratulations on the purchase. Had the interim owner done much work in the 10months?

The interim owner basically took the cars to shows by the looks of things (he is a real car nut).
He had the timing belt changed, had the gearbox oil changed, the wheels refurbished and the callipers painted black. That's about the limit of the extra work to justify the thousands he added to the price he paid. But he did detail it meticulously. It's like new inside.

The steering wheels are the same shape. Apart from the colour, I can't tell the difference between the two wheels. :)

I'll remember that Jim. I do need something for the leather. It's so clean and new looking but when I sit on it, my backside and the small of my back do not move. They almost stick to the leather. There's no "slide" that I get with the more worn leather in Big Red. No "shinyness", just a lot of friction. It's a weird feeling.

I can certainly appreciate the performance David. When jumping back into the 2.8 it feels a bit disappointing.
It is tempting to keep them both but I think someone else wants Big Red more than I do. I don't have the space to keep two cars at the moment so paying to put one in storage at another location doesn't really appeal.

Yes, not much difference between the looks with Big Red having the FE 20" wheels. Just a couple of badges and some chrome mirrors to tell the difference.
How much did I pay? Money and fair words! :D (aka not much less than the asking price)

RS6 13th May 2018 09:11 PM

Can you get us some interior photos be keen to see how new it is on the inside +++

tonupkid 13th May 2018 10:13 PM

That's a most lovely pair Dean

27litres 14th May 2018 09:15 AM

Stay off the forum for a few days and I'm post #34!

I didn't expect you to get it so quick Dean!

I'll add my congrats as well on this thread mate! Well done!

S8's are very subtle with the factory exhaust. Exhaust noise is a matter of personal taste - I do like to hear my V8's!

With regards to the quick purchase, I suppose it's more of a formality to get cars in your possession over there if you buy something with a current MOT!
Over here, to get a car with a Roadworthy (sort of MOT, but more thorough in some respects as it's only done when buying/selling cars and is required to get the car registration in your name), you have to wait for it to get done - can be a week or more depending what fails!

The crispness of it all is amazing! Looks better than my Silver car!

What a bright, clean, sharp interior. Someone has looked after that!+++
