New S6 and S7 will be diesel

I wonder what the S8 will look, sound and smell like  |

The SQ5 is diesel and enjoys fake exhaust pipes. Someone in Audi has missed the point methinks.
|
Current engines for the D5 are -
- 3.0 Tdi Diesel - 3.0 Tfsi Petrol Upcoming Engines for the D5 are (according to my sources in Germany) - 4.0 Tdi - Same as the SQ7 ie twin turbos plus a compressor - 4.0 Tfsi - in 2 levels of tune (presumably S8 and A8L again as before) +++ |
of course Diesel is dead you know
and i dont fink so as Audi yet again stick 2 fingers up to the environmentalists |
The 4.0 tri turbo engine is a corker by all accounts......
I can see how diesel works in the bigger SQ7 and the SQ5. But the old 4.0 Tfsi in the S6/S7 just gone was a great engine. Really great. The 3.0 V6 in my current S5 is a belter too. It pops on overrun, and roars and snarls and whines and whooshes. And this is the problem. Not one of us has driven them yet, but we're judging them on the fuel type chosen as diesel is just not cool. And likely never will be. In a world where performance folks are looking ever more seriously at electric options vs petrol it does seem a risky move to go dirty diesel..... |
Diesels in an s8. No thank you.
I can't stand the stinking things. Travel through London and the irritation from diesel fumes is horrible. Even worse while on a bike. Not to mention the fake exhaust note to make it sound nice. |

I expect it has shorter gearing too to make it rev a bit harder. I like the way a diesel produces power, I like the theory on how it burns, long injection pulses, complete combustion, efficiency and torque. i just don't like the smell (raw, or burnt) of the fuel, the carcinogenic nature of it or the relatively unrefined characteristics. Not sure I could live with it (though the 4.2tdi could convert me) and VAG diesels are seriously on the nose at present. |
A couple of weeks back, one of the contractors on a site I was working on pulled up in a modern Transit with what sounded like a V8.
On further investigation and chatting with the fella, turns out it was just a standard 4-pot diesel but with a soundbox installed. Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx4QfuPnCjA Now, I'm not into the fake sounds either, but it certainly made me look twice and was very convincing. He turns it off on the motorway though, too boomy  |
The SQ7 I test drive had a similar internal sound modifier and I was shocked at how good (and addictive) it sounded!

Not sure if I’m alone on this but we used to find those discarded wooden ice-lolly sticks on the floor and wedge them in such a way as to brush against the spokes on our bicycles (mine was a red Raleigh Striker). Kinda sounded like a V8 and we thought we were the bees-knees!! Oh how I laugh now... |
