quite possibly the most boring thread I've ever started
now i never usually care about fuel consumption.........but I've noticed over almost 2 years of owning the S8 that the average fuel consumption has been dropping ever so often, i tend to reset it every few months or so, as far back as i can remember it was about 19.5mpg then it was 17.6 and now i haven't reset it in about 2 months and its on...
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...00227-1836.jpg either I'm getting a heavier foot or somethings else is amiss :D whats everyone else's got on there's? |
18.2
|
19.3 at the moment but i reset it at start of most journeys. sometimes i have seen an average of less than 16
|
The same thing is happening to my car. Even with the wife driving it the mpg has dropped from about 19.9 to 17.8 over 12 months and she drives it nicely.
That's a bit strange. Could it be something faulty? |
I agree - over the 2 years of ownership I have seen my MPG fall - wonder what it could be as I am sure my driving style hasn't changed that much:Confused:
|
it could just be you're seeing lower figures because of the weather....heated seats, heated rear (and front) windows and mirrors and blowers and lights on for every journey all use a huge amount of power, plus starting the car and letting it warm up and melt the ice all eat petrol. I've only been an 8er for a few months but my average is down from 25 to 22 because of all the demisting i am doing. Indeed the handbook says that the rear window heater uses 1 litre of fuel over 10 hrs operation all by itself! :o
|
Concur with the weather. I think you'll also find that as you have got comfotable with the car you use the power more without thinking about it. I'm down about 2MPG over the almost 3 years I have had the car.
|
yeah good point every journey in the winter involves every electrical thing in sight on :p
|
I've had the engine ilding for two days whilst I try and solder the inside of the car together, I guess that might have dinted the average a little :D
(disclaimer, of course you should disconnect the battery, and not even consider running the engine whilst working on the electrics, never mind the LPG tank disconnected, and the interior missing, but it was cold ok, so leave me alone..... Do as I say, not as I do... :p ) |
19.9. I rarely re-set it. Pity there is only one set of data. Don't most Audis have set A & set B, so that you can record over a long time plus journeys?
|
Mine is still regular at 23.9 mpg so I guess there are some advantages to a 3.7 lol :D
|
That's pretty good. What are you getting out of the A4 as a matter of interest?
|
ive had a brand new bmw 520D all week doing average 40mpg even with my 'style' of driving :p
been back in the audi for the oxford vag meet and wasted so much fuel and loved every min of it  bmw- 0 Audi- 1 |
Umm. . . about 34 lol - aircon on and driving it fairly ahem briskly ;)
|
14.6 :(
and to make matters worse some tosser has driven into my drivers door & driven off  |
Possible Cause?
I have just had my MAF changed by Ben @ AVPerformance. The orther day my engine management light, ABS warning light came on and both ESP and ABS were disabled. Also the gear position light on the DIS lit up all the gears which normally means limp mode; but I still had full control in tip (my normal driving style). Anyway Ben diagnosed a failed MAF and got me another. Once fitted all the lights returned to normal and boy did I notice a difference.
The MAF must have been degrading slowly over time and then failed completely. The gears shift far more smoothly (I was thinking it was time for another ATF change) and the acceleration is brisker. More importantly my MPG has gone from 15 to 16.5 on the journey back home! Result! +++ Is there a way to test the efficiency of the MAFF? |
Ta Daaaa
http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=22093 Maybe not exactly what you're after, but you can get readings from it, might be worth logging them periodically. |

Will have to wait for my new VagCom Lead |

Thought I would add this for mild interst sake. :)
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachmen...1&d=1269006094 Kinda proves my fall off in MPG over the period of ownership! Must recalibrate my right foot! :D |
Glad the Air Mass Meter made a difference Mike!! It sounded AMAZING when you left!!
Easiest way to check the Air Mass is to go into Engine (address 01) in VAGcom. Reading live date (measured value blocks) you will find a block around 004-007ish (changes on certain engines) that displays your imediate air mass signal. Drive the car on full throttle while doing a log. The figure should be comfotably above 180g/s. If reading is below this you EITHER have a duff Air Mass Meter OR an air leak on the inlet system. Both senarios give same results! DOn't forget that on the V8's inlet manifolds come loose and are prone to split rubber pipesand so sucking un-metered air from these points! Please note that this is the biggest cause of A8 auto 'box failures (in my humble opinion and experience)! The auto box uses the air mass signal to calculate engine output and so protect itslef. If this signal is low the 'box doesn;t realise and just carries on destroying itslef without you knowing! MANY Audi's with 'box failures turn out to have air mass faults that have not been spotted and so you new box = dead!!! |
i've over doubled my mpg now :)
i got a diesel van  |
Eep! I thought I was bad with getting a Volvo!
|
haha, its all in aid of saving useless miles on the audi and giving me time to get things done without needing to drive it everyday :)

64bhp
yep ur eyes are not deciving u a whole sixty four horse power how i can control so much power though the front wheels ill never know :p |
OOoooeerrrrrr where's my special sock, I mean barf bag. You changing jobs as well mate. You'll look like a plumber soon!
|
hahahaha dunno about that :p
if the vans a rockin dont come a knockin ;) |

Any other cause is unlikely to be fair! +++ Only kiddin, they're good vans really. And hey, 64bhp isn't bad - FOR A STARTER MOTOR!!!!!!! |
:p haha its like a frickin tractor chug chug chug
im resisting the urge to rip it out and fit the mk4 20vt engine i have, 200bhp would be so much better  it wont be rockin in a few week any way once ive fitted the coilovers i have and flip the rear axle it will be rock solid :D |
Nah, put a 4.2V8 or 2.7BiTurbo in the back!! You could then use the space left in the enigne bay to carry your "rockin" partner's hand bag!
|
that sounds like a plan, wish i hadnt sold my old V8 engine now :-(
|
What a difference a turbo or 2 makes...
I've been keeping a log, as I did with the S8, and so far it looks like I'm getting around 25% better fuel consumption in the '6 with comparable driving, and I'm hoping for a bit more after a remap. Just goes to show what a difference a couple of turbos makes...depending on how you drive of course ;)
|
Due to needing to make a quick run Plymouth to edinburgh I filled both petrol and gas yesterday refilling with petrol after 230miles (about what i get on a tank of gas). From that I found it cost 28.6ppm on Vmax and 19.1ppm on gas. I'm currently doing aprox 3.5k a month!
|
And you've picked up a stutter......
