New to vagcom
Hi all I've order a vagcom ( Ross tech) ,and would like a car manual that includes vagcom info to allow me to identify/ check and clear faults etc or alternatively 2 separate manuals , and was wonder which is best and were to get .for s8 d3

Best place to start is the Ross Tech Wiki pages. They also have a forum for registered users. VCDS is very user friendly and generally won't let you do anything major without prompting you.
The checking for fault codes (scan) is easy as you just click on 'Auto Scan' and it will scan every module in the car. Any faults will show in red and you can then click on them to see what the code is. If you want to just interrogate one module, you can select it manually. http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page |
As far as I can tell VAG Com works the same on my D4 as it did on the D3.
Like Home said, it's user friendly and you will be able to easily figure how to clear fault codes. For making changes to settings, I use the net and dig about. |

Spot on Nick. My experience tallies with you. |
Thanks guys ,I had thought it was more complex ,i don't intend to change settings unnecessarily just to clear and reset faults after the winter maintenance is complete,as a matter of interest I changed rear pads and discs there and refurbed Calipers ,do i need to use vcds to reset values or will hand brake auto learn it's self ,i tried handbrake when finished and it went on and off without problem or faults coming up ( went for short test drive and all good ,wheels weren't binding)

Did you measure the pad thickness to enter through vcds YouTube is your friend.

I removed the pb motors and used a t30 torx into the Calipers to retract pistons ,i didn't measure pads (vcds has come yet but should be here in next day or two ,brakes and pb working correctly )

It's the d3 s8 I'm working on

Well that will teach me to read and not just look at your sig pic! In that case you should have measured the pads and entered the thickness when you changed them +++
Could be you are within a tolerance, but probably worth running the adaption when you get vcds! http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index..._Parking_Brake |
Thanks I'll check to see when it arrives

The D3 definitely needs to know pad thickness as it uses that to calculate when the pads are worn down and hence control the light. If you change the pads without telling it the thickness of the new ones one of two things happens:
1, it still thinks it has old, worn pads and puts the warning light on before the new pads need it 2, it has no idea what pads it has so doesn't both with the warning light at all. The first sign you get of worn pads is it wearing through to the metal and destroying the discs! That is assuming, of course, that you rely on the warnings to tell you when the pads are worn. It uses the servo in the motor to determine how much the piston moves by when it applies or releases the parking brake, but it doesn't know the absolute position of the piston, hence why you have to tell it the pad thickness so it can calculate the change from the piston movement. |

Is this a sign for the future? Mikki knows something about D3's Is there hope for the lesser ones amongst us? If I don't fall of my perch could it be that my D4 could feel the touch of her gentle hands? |

I am pleading Old Age, I didn't mean it Guv. It was the Leprechauns that made me do it, honest. My D4 passed it's MOT today. It had been delayed by 6 months due to Corona. It came up with 14 days to oil change so that was done at the same time with a new filter. I can't complain, cost me £100. Parts only, no labour cost. I am so lucky, the way I am looked after. |
Ah, the "Big boys made me do it and then ran away" excuse.... or in your even less credible case, the small boys.:tuttut:
Good to hear you got the MoT though, Ray +++ |
