2000 D2 S8 for sale

Hi chaps. Time to let my lovely S8 go. Had it around 7 years. Santorin blue (lovely colour). 1 previous owner, full history tons of receipts. Brand new full custom stainless exhaust with brand new cats. New discs / pads all round. Just serviced last week. Oil filters, including pollen and fuel filter. Castro’s edge 5/40.
Full black leather. All usual extras. Wheels refurbed 2 weeks ago. New rear callipers. Air con ice cold. Never been bumped. Sounds absolutely lovely (nice V8 burble) but quiet on motorway runs. Few chips n scratches, but an honest very well presented 20 year old S8. Has private plate reading S8 ??X. Comes with car. Really hard decision but need to move on. Just putting word out to see any interest. Can post pics and more details on request. Open to offers... comes with all original handbooks and spare keys including valet key! Thanks.

tintin 7th January 2021 06:56 PM

Nice, lovely colour

Nice car, looks well looked after and to be in good condition, given the mileage, so i'm sure there will be interest in this.

The first question you'll get asked on here is more detail on the status of the gearbox (other than the tiptronic point you mentioned) - i.e. are there any major issues, has it be reconditioned/serviced/rebuilt etc...

homer simpson 7th January 2021 06:59 PM

Love the colour! Good luck with the sale

IT 7th January 2021 07:22 PM

Thanks for the update. Spot on.

For those interested, Spec includes Heated rear seats, Servotronic, TV tuner, Bixenon (option on 2000) and autodim mirrors (which were actually standard in 2000)

Colour is Santorin blue (quite rare), factory interior was 'The Blues', a very dark blue interior. Hard to tell from the photos if its that, or indeed been switched to black.

Any issue with the gearbox will have people hesitating, which is a shame as otherwise its very smart looking indeed. +++

RICKY D 7th January 2021 08:33 PM

That looks very nice indeed. The colour is sublime.

Good luck +++

smoothcoupe 7th January 2021 09:07 PM

It is very nice colour indeed. Especially in the sun. Refurbed the headlights and alloys too. Got a lot of on road presence which most modern cars do not have. Especially the build quality.. I can’t see a majority of these new eco cars still demanding respect in 20 years time.

Interesting point, new electric car lifespans are linked to battery life. IIRC, the batteries are past their best after around 10 years average use (with today's battery technology) and are usually uneconomic (with today's battery prices) to replace on a 10 year-old car.

So 20 year old electric cars are not likely.

Yet.

FWIW the car looks really nice, good luck.

It's more about recharge cycles rather than age. Bigger battery needs recharging less often so will last for more miles/years. Early Nissan Leaf 24kWh batteries last about 100k before dropping to 50% capacity, Tesla Model S has 75-100kWh batteries so expect them to last 300-400k miles before they drop to 50% capacity. Bigger battery at 50% capacity is still more usable than a small one as 8 year old Leaf with 100k miles will only do about 30 miles with a 50% battery capacity but Tesla with aged battery at 50% capacity will do 100 miles on charge.

Nognar 8th January 2021 01:49 PM

Lovely car and lovely colour.

But as others said, has the gearbox ever been serviced/ repaired or replaced as that is the one critical item on an old S8?

Also the next big item is the cambelt, when was that last done?

smoothcoupe 8th January 2021 03:40 PM

Since I have had the car I have not serviced the gearbox, just followed the theory that if it ain’t broke why fix it. Previously to my ownership i Honestly don’t know whether this has been done it gets driven daily as it has done in my ownership going up and down the gears no problem. Again the problem with the tiptronic is an issue I’ve lived with and to be honest hasn’t caused me any grief, obviously this isn’t a good selling point but I just want to be completely honest and open about the car as I want it to go to a good home. Re the belt change according to the service book this was done around 90,000 miles. I’m not for a minute suggesting the car is split mint but I would say for 20 years old it is still going strong. I’m a reasonable person open to offers!!

Adrian E 8th January 2021 03:55 PM

OK, so cambelt is approx 14 years and 75k-ish miles old. That's a definite to-do job for a new owner. (From memory they're every 5 years, but can often be left longer on low annual mileage cars, or 80k miles)

It's highly unlikely the box has survived to that mileage without being serviced, replaced or overhauled, but on the off chance it has it'll most likely feel pretty tired and slow to engage drive in forward or reverse when moved out of neutral, so a test drive should show up for those that have experience of these cars.

Good luck with the sale :D

The_Laird 8th January 2021 06:51 PM

I’m not a fan of the ‘if i ain’t broke’ philosophy, especially regarding the ZF gearboxes. My S8 has around 196K on the clock, but i know the ‘box was serviced before my ownership (I’ve done around half of these miles) and I’ve had 4 or 5 ‘box services at Mackie’s in Glasgow (reputed to be THE ZF ‘box specialist) and each one has come with a clean report. After each service, it feels a little better, so I’m a fan of ‘if it ain’t broke, service it anyway’ school.
That said, for £3k, if I had somewhere to put this car and wanted to risk a divorce, I’d snap kit up - it’s a beauty!
BTW, my first ‘8 (a 2.8 Q sport) was a very pale blue (crystal blue) and had the very dark blue leather interior (I loved it), but I think this one looks like black.

MikkiJayne 8th January 2021 09:05 PM

With the ZF 5HP, if it ain't broke, it will be soon

That interior looks black to me too, but light coloured uppers is unusual in an S8 with black leather I think? My black interiors all have black uppers.

I’ll give it a few weeks if no takers I’ll put her in storage and use it as my next project next summer. Then keep it indefinitely. Too nice a car to let die.. shame because it drives lovely. Thanks all for your input👍🏽👍🏽. I’ll bear that XF box specialist in mind..

I can 100% second the Mackie's recommendation: they saved and rebuilt my S8 gearbox after it showed signs of imminent failure - I'll never forget the nail-biting 230 mile drive to Glasgow with it slipping, particularly on the M6 climb at Shap :eek2: . Like Jim's, mine gets regular servicing from them, and is stronger and smoother now with 120k on the clock than when I bought it on 20k.

If I were buying yours, that would be the first thing I would book it in for.

So upon purchase its squeeky bum ride to Mackies then another squeeky bum ride to MJ for the 'Dr D2' (that rhymes:ROFL:) cambelt treatment. Thats a lot of squeeky bum.

MikkiJayne 12th January 2021 01:28 PM

The gearbox is nbd really - just get a fluid exchange done by a machine rather than the usual sump-off method and it'll give it new oil without disturbing anything.

The 14 year old timing belt probably warrants a visual inspection to check for cracking, perishing and tension, since the usual failure mode in that area is the hydraulic tensioner.

The price seems sensible given these maintenance jobs though :)

Cambelt change is either every 80k or 5 years, whichever comes first, so it sounds like this one is due/overdue, depending on whether the last change was within 5 years. I (very nearly...) pushed this too far with my S8, as the chain tensioner broke when MJ moved it from the front of her place to inside the workshop! (see her thread on this) - a very lucky escape from a potentially terminal mistake! :(

smoothcoupe 13th January 2021 03:36 AM

Picked up my 2015 BMW 640D mpsport grancoupe. So if anybody interested in the S8 before I put her in hibernation. Please feel free to get in touch.... don’t worry I have broad shoulders I won’t be offended. Like the old saying goes “ if you don’t ask, you don’t get” thanks.

Hatchet 13th January 2021 07:53 AM

I tried to send you a PM about this - but it is not appearing in my sent items so may not have come through.

The forum doesn't use Sent Items unless you specifically turn it on. Lots of people get caught out by that :)

Thanks!
