Ea\se of fitting badge on front grille

I think the car was delivered without the W12 badges, but I want to put them back on.
The stick-on ones are fine, but what about the badge in the front grille - how easy its that to fit? (worth considering glue??? :) )

[EDIT] sorry for the typo mistake in the subject line, the silly forum won't let me edit it.

Parts wise, both should still be available from Audi themselves. The badge itself is part number 4H0853736A, but you also need two small clips, part number 8L0807180.

Check out the following PDF from page 336 on fitting the front badge, and page 334 for the locations of the side and rear badges:

That's fantastic thankyou very much!! Looks like an easy job then. I had imagined having to disassemble the entire front-end to get at fiddly clips behind there lol.

That PDF is gold too. I was looking for something like that, I found an online version but this is great. I need to change the external heated mirror glass too and just a couple of pages up it's right there!!

Thanks again.

It's also worth checking out the following thread which has a lot of associated PDFs for the D4:

Has anyone fitted the clips on the front grille? Looking at mine I think it's going to be impossible to get behind there to install the clips...

Didn't realise there was a mesh behind the main grille. The instructions don't mention it, but I would think that they could be fitted from the front, so long as you don't drop them.

Horrgakx 14th June 2024 07:39 AM

I'm not so sure, looks like I need to get behind there. I wonder how easy it is to get the grill off....

Page 267 of the above mentioned PDF has an exploded diagram of how it was put together and how to remove it. I don't see any mention of the mesh though.

Even by Audi standards, I don't think they require a full disassembly to fit a badge.

Update 29/7/24
I bought the W12 front badge :) It does look suspiciously easy to fit on page 336 of the Exterior Parts Service Manual but it is impossible to access from the front. As you said Steamship, Page 267 of that manual shows a simplistic exploded diagram of how the grille is attached but I had a lot of head-scratching over the weekend so it's still not fitted yet.

Worth noting is that the badge looks very different to that displayed on page 336 - the one I have has 2 long "legs" which go through the grille, at least an inch long.
It's this item here; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266129152...mis&media=COPY

I'll see what happens over the next few days, if I can I'll take photos. But I'm the worlds most impatient person when it comes to this and I tend to prefer giving the job to a garage

Horrgakx 30th July 2024 07:27 AM

The part number I bought is 4H0853738T94.

That looks like it's designed to just clip in. Is the single shorter protrusion some sort of release latch?

Horrgakx 30th July 2024 11:31 AM

Good question. I'll give it a closer dose of looking at.

The manual makes reference to two retaining clips (8L0807180), and that's the awkward part of the exercise.

Horrgakx 30th July 2024 07:48 PM

I tried a dry-fitting just now prior to going anywhere near it with clips, here's a video of it. I can't get it to settle into where I think it should go.
I'm trying it in this position because if you notice on the grille, the badge has two notches to help it locate, and the vertical black strip on the grille has a small raised notch likely used to locate it vertically. I just can't get it to sit right.

I wondered about that mesh in a previous post, especially since the parts catalogue doesn't show it, nor does the PDF. Has the mesh been added, and in the process, made it impossible to fit the W12 emblem? Is that perhaps why it didn't have one?

Horrgakx 30th July 2024 08:48 PM

I don't have a clue about the mesh. Is it not standard? However it doesn't stop the 'legs' going through the mesh, it just doesn't sit nicely anywhere.
Maybe it's a W12 thing?

Firstly, apologies as I apparently gave you the wrong part number (4H0853736A).

This bit about the mesh got me thinking again, and I started reading through all the posts again after watching the video, and although I saw your post (#11) where you mention the part you bought (4H0853738), it appears we both got the wrong part numbers.

The part number I gave was for a 2010-2013 D4, where there is no mention of the mesh in the parts catalogue. Yours appears to be a later model D4, and, when I look at the W12 grille, it does indeed have a mesh. However, the part number is different yet again, this time 4H0853738A. I don't have a picture of it, nor does the parts catalogue show it to be a superseded version of the one you bought (4H0853738). Nor sure where you purchased yours from, but if buying the other one, I'd get photos of it beforehand to compare with yours. There is still the fact that the two clips are still part of the problem when it comes to fitting.

Lessons learnt from this:
1. The PDFs 'may' not be 100% correct if the model (D2,D3,D4) has gone through a facelift during its lifetime
2. It pays to have you car details in the signature line to avoid confusion like this

Thanks very much for the replies. I have started the return process for the badge I currently have and they have sent me a link to the correct one.

I've updated my sig to show that it's a D4, thanks for the tip.

Glad that you can still return the badge.

As for the signature, add the year as well, as that is the important part.

Horrgakx 16th August 2024 09:39 AM

Update - the new badge has arrived. It fits :) part number 4H0853738AT94

Photos are here if anyone finds them useful...
As for fitting I doubt I'll be taking the grille off, I think some adhesive will be the best option so I'll look at keying the surfaces first as they're smooth and shiny.
