Daily Drivers..... ?
So, how many folks out there are using their 8 as their regular commute? I was poddling from Harrogate to Birmingham this morning looking at the dreary line of identical looking rep mobiles clogging up the outside lane and wondered how many other 8'ers out there were in their motors travelling to work at the same time..??
I'll start +++ So, although I dont commute very often and usually work from home, when I do have to go on business, my 8 is my main car. Its a 2000 4.2 Quattro sport which I've had this one 9 months now, and will go over 10,000 miles driving in it on the journey home.... So who else relies on their 8 for work ? |
I used to, but couldn't stand abusing my S8 on my 6 mile commute over potholed roads, I now use my second car for that, a W124 E320 coupe. The Merc has nice big bouncy 65 profile tyres, not 35 profile liquorice strips, so is much better suited to the journey, and it looks good to. The S8 now gets used for my longer journeys, 1+ hour trips.

I use mine for my Daily. Do roughly 40+ Miles aday. 4 School runs, 4 Playgroup run, plus work. Only problem is, where we live its narrow lanes. People seem to like to drive to fast down them and drive in the centre of road:tuttut:
Steve's cars are the ones that sitin the barn and garages:tuttut:. Im not into the cars that arnt used or are trailered everywhere. Sorry |
I've owned my 8 for 3 years now and have put 60K on it. 14K so far this year. I tend to do long Motorway blasts though, for which it's ideal. +++ |
used to,
now i have a vw denzel van, its slow noisy and does about 5000mpg so ideal for my 3.5 mile commute :) true to my style its lowered and subtly modded and of course cleaned regularly :p |
Daily 6.5miles commute when working days is a Dolan 18 speed part carbon, aluminum race push bike.Mainly due to keeping some levels of fitness, but also due to the traffic,
But when working nights,no traffic issues, either in or out of work, then its off to work with a smile in the S8,:D |
I need to do 360 miles a month for work, so about a tank of V Power at £100+ and at 16-20MPG. Its a 25-30 minute commute each way. I don't mind paying the extra costs associated with a 4.2 V8 over say a diesel Golf as I look so forward to the drive home and like glancing over at it in the car park whenever I can.
The only thing that made me think twice about depending on it as my daily was today as I have been put to some inconvenience arranging to get to/fro work whilst the fuel pump is replaced. Fingers crossed now the gearbox and fuel pump are sorted it won't let me down again, otherwise I will have to pick up a daily of some sort. Even if that did let me down, any old backstreet garage could sort it using a 20p part from GSF. The S8 has to go to Ben on the back of a flatbed (Not a normal AA truck!) then have to wait 3-5 days as my Audi OEM parts arrive from Germany. Still, I have had so many compliments from people at work about it! Btw it costs both my sisters in four pot diesels just under £30 to do 360 miles compared to my £100+ |
I use mine every day for 10 mile commute to work in the lake district......but also at least once a month i am down to london or milton keynes or over to leeds/ newcastle to see family and friends and it is just a pleasure to do these trips in the 8.......
did home to wembley and back with 5 adults (3 over 6ft ) and luggage in the car on a single tank of fuel.......and i wasn't hanging around :) especially on the M6 toll It's a 2004 4.0 tdi Quattro with 75,000 on the clock |
My '8 is my normal everyday car, it gets the work commute, the supermarket commute, the "lets go to the movies and have a meal after" commute, the "can i have a lift please" commute and if I'm really lucky, the day trip in the sunshine commute :D
|
The missus gets to use the '8' as her daily driver doing a 50 mile round trip to work four days a week.
I have a company car (2010 Insignia), so I think she has definitely got the better deal :-(. Car is also used for showing off and demolishing Chavs in Corsas and Clios :D. |
I used to whenever mine was working. in 12 months I covered ~ 20K even though it was off road for nearly 3 months of that
|
Mine is the daily driver for my work, doing about 20k/year.
Can't imagine doing that kind of mileage in anything less anymore. |
As sad as it sounds I just can't park mine in a carpark, I've only done it a handful of times and that's in sideways spaces or across 2 spaces at the far end of the car park, when I go to sainsburys in it I park in the industral state near it and walk, the missis loves that :p
|
Im whacking most of my work miles onto the A4 as im doing about 35k a year, but i do take the '8 to the office some days and drive it at the weekends when I'm back up to london. Love driving the auto around London and love the tiptronic on a B road :D

I use my S8 for the daily commute. Sadly its less than a mile there and again less than a mile back. So ten times a week it gets to run for about 2 minutes from cold and doesn't warm up.
Not good for an S8. However it seems to be shrugging it off. Plus I have to go for a blast from time to time. My last motor (Sexlus LS400) couldn't hack it, for all its much famed reliability. I'm putting on about 8k a year and its returning 20.1 mpg. This includes a period where a rear brake stuck on until the pad had gone and it started eating metal. Ow! That knocked the MPG but its coming good again. I don't pussy foot around so with all the cold runs and batting about, can't complain at all |

Well its not exactly a commute, but my 8 [pf 2.5tdi lhd] regularly does the run from where we house sit in France back and forward to UK. Mix of high speed - well 130kph cruise - and local shopping. Delivers average 33mpg if I use the premium diesel. Nearly everything works fine only disc pad warning and air bag seat occupancy sensor which I clear before a long run to save irritation. Just about to fit Philips LED day running lights [only 100 euros delivered in France against 145 pounds in UK] as a grey car in this weather needs an outline and HID are a little over the top in daylight.

My A8 is and has been my daily driver since I bought the car over 2 years ago.
Also used for holidays twice across Europe (what a blast:cool:). Costs a fortune but so worth it though+++ |
My A8 is my daily comuting machine. It's a 6.5 mile drive each way which the15 mins drive at 6:30am and it is the perfect way to start the day, and the 20 min return trip at 15:30 the perfect way to switch off from work. Don't think I would feel quite as relaxed arriving at work and home in many other drives :)

Ive had my 2002 S8 sinceabout february, it is my daily, doing about 40miles a day and averaging between 18and 21mpg depending on how i drive it. When i first bought it i was doing 120miles a day (that was costly!) but ultimately I see the S8 as an extremely comfy, practical car wich goes well so makes the perfect daily.
So far its done a few big journeys such as a trip to nottingham and out to Le Mans last weekend for the 24. |
My 8 is a daily driver i bought it because i'm living in Bideford and working in Portsmouth, she eats about 450 miles a week. I brought it soley for putting the miles on it just a tool for a job, but then i fell in love with it. Great car with a good community and owners club. It's a 97 4.2Q, 165000 ish
