Hi All.

In my newly purchased S8 I have a solar sunroof, problem is the car manual does not say how it works,so do any of you chaps know how the solar roof works.

In a nut shell, the solar panels supply power to the fans when the temperature in the cabin gets to high. Works best in the summer! :)

IT 27th October 2010 08:01 PM

Yup, basically there is a relay in the passenger footwell....

When the ignition is off, and the resting heater isnt on, then the solar panels are connected directly to the blower motor so that in strong sunlight the blower fans draw in fresh air. That simple really.....

You need decent sunlight, or according to the Audi tech manuals, 2 x 500w halogen floodlights held close by to test it... +++

and you can hear it gently humming on sunny days...........a happy sound! make sure you keep it clean though, dont wash the car for a while and doesn't work so good.

There is no switch, and you cant switch it off - Like all good innovations, it just works in the background without bothering the driver +++

...less so when getting one from A8 Parts :D- which I did back in January.

I'm finally getting round to having this fitted by Unit 20 next Monday, having retrieved it today from Burton-on-Trent, where it had been delivered for Ben to fit :(

Martin and his team haven't fitted one below - anyone on here got any tips and tricks on doing this? Carl from A8 Parts thinks it has all the wiring, but Martin and I were wondering if there anything else to watch out for?

PsYcHe 25th April 2012 01:19 PM

You probably have to take the roof lining at least down if not out, and that's very fiddly if you have to take it out:)

briang9 25th April 2012 01:23 PM

maybe better getting A8 Parts to fit it, I know they have done a few, and were also offering one as a prize at the recent open day, or try and find a Webasto agent as it was them who made it, Webasto web site has a find dealer option

I won that Sunroof ,it arrived today at the house :D

IT 25th April 2012 03:08 PM

A8parts dont do retrofit work any more as a rule - Way too busy processing parts sales.

You *could* drop the roof lining, but its a waste of time, you dont need to.

I know this solar roof saga has been going on a while now - I've done quite a few of these (oddly enough, seeing as I came up with the retrofit in the first place lol) - So if you want someone with a some experience to pop it in for you, and wire it all up, PM me an offer to compensate the wife and kids for losing me on a weekend, and you can bring it to my place if that helps +++ (when theres less drought falling out of the sky preferably)

Thats no disrespect to Unit 20, I dont doubt they'll do a cracking job too, I'll probably just get there a touch quicker +++

I guess its worth me doing a write up on it too while Im at it. Its pretty simple, if you know where the bits need to go....

The_Laird 25th April 2012 08:15 PM

Or you could sell the solar sunroof to me and I'll get IT to do it on my car - seriously!

Nollywood 25th April 2012 08:36 PM

Ian, I'll be in touch shortly, for some retrofits.

From now on, you're not IT. As far as I'm concerned, you're the RF Man. +++

IT 25th April 2012 08:57 PM

Errrr......

It was more a favour for tintin specifically as he bought the car from me, than a public opening of a new service.... :eek3::eek3:

Some retrofits are easier than others - PM me by all means - I have 4 kids and time is limited to say the least but, being a Yorkshireman, pictures of the queen I find quite irresistible... ;)

B@fink 25th April 2012 09:11 PM

or you could just get one with a solar roof in it to start with!?! Even my "baby" 2.8 has one......... :D

Too true. Much easier (and cheaper) to fit a solar roof panel to an S8, than convert a 2,8 QS to S8 spec. :D

IT 25th April 2012 09:26 PM

I think Nollywood makes a good point there.....

tintin 25th April 2012 09:50 PM

Cheers Ian - I didn't intend to start a whole new solar sunroof fitting business for you...

Offer is greatly appreciated, and I've just pm'ed you back.

PS - Scots banknotes don't have pictures of the queen on them - can I pay with them instead ;)

Singh 25th April 2012 10:28 PM

Ian, please send me your account number and sort code etc, I just remembered I owe you some money. +++
