Fitting AMI Interface
You will require an AMI interface out of an A4/A6/A8 - Check part number first, most start with 4E0 which is perfect.
You will need: 4D0 051 530 - Release Tools to remove CD Changer (Approx £5) 4F0 051 510 K - iPod Cable to fit AMI (Approx £20) 4F0 051 592 A - Wiring Harness for Power and Retrofit Kit - (Approx £30) You will not need the last one if you simply replace the CD changer. I wanted both :) So that is the official audi dealer retrofit kit number. Release tools make it easy. Basically drop glovebox, remove the CD Changer first, then fit the wiring harness to split the MOST bus and power for the AMI most, and fit both. You will require the latest MMI software installed. Let me know if you need a copy. If the AMI is new it will require coding, if not it should work immediately :D Done :D |
This sounds all too easy :D
Can anyone explain what the hell MOST stands for :p And, I am retrofitting this into the black D3 tomorrow hopefully, please can someone show me how the "MOST" connection should be to enable both CD & AMI to work instead of loosing the CD changer. Unless this is simply plug and play of course? I get the impression I need to connect wires to wires though??? Just a bit of info on the AMI units for the A8... there are only 12 left in stock at Audi HQ, when they are sold they are not making anymore... so if anyone wants to retrofit this into their car they need to do it now +++ |

Just use a granny knot. :D |

I have no problem with connecting wires etc but I would need to know which ones :D |
MOST stands for something like Media Oriented System Transport. It's a fibre-loop that goes round the car components.
Thankfully, you don't have to splice any fibres, but you do need to take at least one of the connectors apart behind the CD changer. Seriously, if you are happy to just put all your CDs on the AMI as MP3 on a hard drive, or iPod then it's a bazillion times easier to fit. The loom should come with all the instructions on which connectors to take apart and stuff. |
Aah I see, thanks hun-thats easy peezy then hopefully. :)
I will let you know how I get on. +++ Would anyone be able to give me a step by step for the VCDS? I need to open a module or something dont I??? (this is the bit I have no idea on) :p |
Mine was plug and play, no vagcom work... Connected the leccy, looped through the fiber and voila, the CD changer and AMI both work fine now...
PsYcHe is right though, if you dont have the pukka 'upgrade kit' which comes with the fiber Y connectors and wiring then its far, far easier to remove the Cd changer and put the AMI in its place.. It does rely on a later version of the MMI though, but you'll have that no doubt in yours I would think.... +++ |
It needs to be something like 3360 or similar to support AMI.
And yes, you may need to turn on media player 1 or 2 in VCDS. it's the main module long coding if I remember rightly (module 07?). |
Brilliant-thanks everyone. I should be fine :)
I have latest software so all fine there +++ Fingers crossed for tomorrow. |
Yep dead easy as agreed. Unplug one plug in other. I have a spare power splitter if you need one.
Get stuck gimme a bell. If you remove the CD Changer keep it. |
also if you swap the ami for the cd - you dont need to drop the glove box. whole thing took me less than 10 minutes
|
I need an AMI for mine, but they're so flipping expensive :(
Looking forward to hearing how you get on with installing yours A8L Chick. Good luck with it |

Fitting was a piece of ****! Honestly the easiest thing I have done on these A8's by far ;) I have both the CD player connected & the AMI. No VCDS needed, worked immediately  Quote:
Took 10mins from unpacking to listening :rockin: I will post current part numbers later ;) |
Does this mean that brides can plug in their iPoddy now and play soothing calming music before the big event?? :D
|
I'm guessing you've got the ipod interface.. but there's a couple of others too
I've got the USB connection with a hard drive in there, but you can also get a bluetooth connection to stream from phones too. |

Bluetooth parts are a bit too highly priced for my liking. iphone works in the AMI too but I use BB for business, thats always connected to the handsfree via bluetooth anyway +++ |
I must say I do fancy this AMI unit, I miss having the ipod connected for my sounds!
Would I need the software updating on mine? 2007 car. Whats the prices for the kit? +++ |
Got mine on ebay, if i remember rightly the prices were
AMI unit - 220 Audi 250gb hard disk - 70 Ipod lead and Hdd lead - 15 its well worth doing, the qualitys so good. obviously you dont need the hdd and lead if you want to use your ipod I cant remember what software you need, mine got upgraded to 5540 or something when i put the Phone system in. most write ups say you need to do a vagcom coding if you want to leave your cd in as well. |
if your MMI is above 3320 (or around that), then you're good to go, but the 5570 upgrade is nice too.
|
I kept my 6 disk changer and installed AMI next to it (replacing the small compartment cubby hole) and I didn't need to use VCDS. Worked from the off-but I do have latest software version.
My whole setup was £200 from Audi, but I do get a hefty discount. I think it's closer to £300 normally direct from audi. Bex |
Thanks for the info on this everyone +++
I have had a nosey on the system before trying to upgrade anything and would appreciate advice on how I fine what version is installed The Sat Nav was easy popped the disk and its the 2007 disc part number T1000-11354 When I went into the MMI system section and pressed version. It lists a stack of numbers what am looking for please  I can list them here if its of any use? Thanks |
I've been quoted over £500 at Audi!!!!! The B4stards:mad:
|
Glyn,
You're looking for the first line.. will say something like 31.2.0 or similar. tonup - There's loads on ebay, or give craigyb a shout. |

I am a little funny about buying off fleabay for stuff like this :eek3: |

The first line reads SW: D3 -HU28.6.00620 Do I need to get this udated before trying to get AMI fitted Sorry to be thick but I hate making costly mistakes Cheers Glyn |
Yup.. you need an update. You're on 2860, AMI needs something like 3320, but you can go straight to 5570 with this version, you just need the update CDs (5 quid ish at the dealer, or various *ahem* internet repositories), possibly need the update menu turned on in VCDS too though.
You'll also get the 3D satnav view and a pile of updates to the Bose, etc to improve sound. |
Cheers +++
Will begin a search failing that down to the stealers :( Although it begs the question why they dont do this as a routine when the damn car was serviced ! |

Remember when I had mine done - I could have fallen asleep! Because you have to update each version one disk at a time so you dont screw the MMI up, each disk takes a while, and you cant press anything in the car whilst the updates are in progress, too much to go wrong I guess. I think they will do it-at a cost of course  |
I've think I might be able to locate a copy of 5570 if you pm me ahemmm :D

I've bunged a pict off my MMI with version details, in case you need it |
Ooh.. you're only on 3450.. You may want to look at the 5570 upgrade. AMI should work OK on that version though.

PM me your VIN number to make sure I get the right parts for you hun. I will let you know price/availability of Audi (when I bought mine they only had 12 left & they are no longer making them/discontinued) Bex (P.S do you want the lead so you dont have to loose the CD player) |
I have priced up the bits you need with Audi-and I can get them for £245 including VAT (petty sure thats the right price-I am within a £10 threshold...but I know it's less than £250-I have a brain like a sive)
Let me know what you want to do +++ Only extra you'll have to sort out is potage from me to you ;) |

Will this work on a facelift car?
Gents,
A question from an uninitiated simpleton: Will this set-up work on a 2005 (facelift) A8? Many thanks. |
works on mine

I've ordered my parts to do the retrofit through TPS after getting the part numbers from my friendly dealer :
The AMI kit is : 4E0 057 785 F - N/Stk A4E0 057 785 D The cable kit is : 4F0 051 592 A - N/Stk AMICABLESET The dealer total for this lot is £231.00 including the dreaded, they quoted £399 including fitting and any necessary MMI update. There is a small discount through TPS (down to £212). The guy in the dealer told me the prices have tumbled for these recently. TPS told me there was 'plenty of central stock' when he checked availability. My MMI is on an old version 2120 so I have also ordered the update CDs (Part # - 4L0 998 961). They are listed as a repair kit on ETKA and have a list price of just over £5. There is somebody on eBay punting these out for over £20 including PnP ! Is there any interest in me doing a write up on the update / install ?, if so I'll knock one together. |
Hi Godders
I'd be interested in how you do this as I would like to add the AMI so if you can take a few pictures and add some notes ...much appreciated. Forgive me being thick but who/what are TPS mate? Also I have seen a few of the AMI parts listed on fleabay etc. and the final number appears to be different on a few does this make a difference as the unit looks the same and is listed as suitable for the D3 A8? Cheers Glyn |
