miles per gallon

Today i went for a drive to the land that time forgot (scotland) and did just over 360 miles. i got an average of 28.1 mpg. That was a few miles round town, then about 30 miles of country roads then the rest motorway. I think thats pretty good for an S8. Although the other day i got an average of just over 30 mpg driving like a judge going to sheffield. does everybody else get about the same ?
Also fuel costs. i thought they were supposed to be going down or staying the same ? wednesday i paid £135.9 per litre and today i had to pay £139.9 from the same garage. whats going on ?

Singh 3rd April 2011 07:14 PM

That is some drive. Never seen 28 as an average on any S8. Perhaps your Revo map has improved things? Not sure about the price, I don't even look anymore.

darrenjoe90 3rd April 2011 07:20 PM

i am sure that i do get better fuel consumption now after the remap and she runs a lot better +++

Adrian E 3rd April 2011 07:33 PM

never seen better than 20mpg and round town it's nearer 14 :-( did manage to nudge the tank average up to 17 by doing a few miles cross country.....

I don't drive like a loon either, as usually got my 11 month old in the car!

Mr K 3rd April 2011 08:33 PM

Managed 29-30 on a run upto the lake district last year, sitting on the motorway at a steady 70 all day long.

Get about 21-22 on my daily a road commute.

surveysteve 3rd April 2011 10:24 PM

I've been getting 21 ish, thats with a 60 mile round trip when I'm in the office.
I could get better but I'm still enjoying the rate that the car get upto speed.

Zip 4th April 2011 08:24 AM

my computer is pretty much stuck at 14.5 at the moment with lots of very short local journeys.

Get 22ish on long runs

Zip (2002 S8 as well)

Architex_mA8tey 4th April 2011 05:34 PM

Im getting 22-26 on my 3.7 FL, mostly local and short motorway runs, be likely to be 3 or 4 mph better on a long run

Conan_the_Librarian 4th April 2011 06:45 PM

Being mildly anal and running a spreadsheet since I acquired the 8 I have managed 30.5 mpg average (financially). LPG Rulezzzzzzz...:D++++++

jayzee 4th April 2011 06:50 PM

V-power and foot to the floor all the way for me ;)

B@fink 4th April 2011 07:15 PM

i'll stick with my 6 cyl......25mpg easy on my normal 7 mile commute, give me a decent journey and 36+ is do-able. All the comfort, all the quiet, all the toys....slightly less pain at the pump.

cathedral60 4th April 2011 07:15 PM

Im looking for a S8 with lpg, so for now count yourselves lucky, I have a vectra sri 140bhp and can only get the bloody heap up to 23mpg. Mostly short runs but still rubbish

Something isn't right for you to get that - unless you are hoofing it on your short journies

ETA - no car will give anywhere near it's official MPG when warming up.

cathedral60 4th April 2011 07:19 PM

Bit heavy footied at times but Ive checked the net and thats not far from the norm
cant wait to join ur ranks when I get my S8

Singh 4th April 2011 07:36 PM

I really don't like LPG. I run mine on V Power. I know where I stand with petrol, LPG gauges aren't as accurate as I like. I don't know where the filling stations are, very slight performance reduction, takes up too much boot space, makes engine bay look crap, stupid filler thing in my bumper. Sorry, I'll stop now. Just remembered I'm trying to sell this car, I'd make such a crap salesmen

cathedral60 4th April 2011 07:46 PM

Id buy your car tomorrow if I had more cash to spare (have to factor traveling to england and bringing it back also), love the look of it and everything you've done to it.
Is it quattro?

jayzee 4th April 2011 07:49 PM

I think you would call his car an S8 Quattro "plus" - only the v5 says differently +++

Singh 4th April 2011 07:50 PM

Yeah, it's quattro. If you took it with standard 18" wheels and the standard sat Nav without the Bluetooth and TV and maybe standard rather then twin Xenons I could come down on price. If it doesn't go this week then that's what the plan is.

Haha I like that, but quattro is spelt with a small 'q' just a branding thing I think like eBay rather then Ebay... +++

cathedral60 4th April 2011 07:59 PM

Think that would ruin what is a beautiful motor.
Like I say wish I could meet your price but for now the search goes on.

Hope you do get it sold soon though +++

Conan_the_Librarian 4th April 2011 08:28 PM

I wish I could afford to run my car on V-Power. But then I'm not rich.........

Singh 4th April 2011 08:32 PM

Mike, If I did the miles you do then its a no brainer, plus the LPG station isn't really in a convenient place. That's for me personally but for others it makes sense.

Conan_the_Librarian 4th April 2011 08:38 PM

Put your postcode into petrolprices.com. You'll be surprised how many LPG stations there are. The motorway sytem is loaded with them. Every Calor and Flogas depot has them. When I need the extra power I lean slightly forward and press a small button. When I need more I press the nitrous button (uses LPG) and fly past the average 911 turbo! Muhahahahahaha

Architex_mA8tey 4th April 2011 10:17 PM

petrolprices.com have got an excellent app out now called petrolprices pro which uses your current location to search within a radius that you choose and on the fuel you need to tell you where the cheapest station is for your chosen fuel.

It's £2.99 for the app but I figure youll save that pretty quickly if youre all over the place regulalrly and dont know where the nearest cheap filling station is . . .+++

++++++++++++++++++++++++ :D

surveysteve 5th April 2011 06:01 PM

I did think about getting a gas kit fitted, that was untill I worked out how much I would save against the cost of fitting a good kit.
I would need to keep the car for 2+ years to make the money back, being honest, I dont think that I'd keep the car that long.
I'm not saying anything against it, I just dont keep cars for long is all.

Mind you, the way the price of fuel is going I may well just keep my 1.0 Polo that I have for sale

darrenjoe90 5th April 2011 08:37 PM

instead of getting lpg fitted i just bought a small car.for my local trips to the shops and trips to the kids football training then i drive my 1.25 fiesta +++ saves me a small fortune and no kids in the s8 full of mud.

chrisp17283 7th June 2011 05:15 AM

I'm not sure what's going on with my gaby 2.8 a8 then as Im not seeing anything like what your getting in the s8's!! If I take note of the dash it says I'm getting between 10.1 and 11.6 around town and about 15-17 on a run at about 70-75? If i work it out properly im getting about 21.6-22mpg on a run! I've replaced maf sensor, all vacuum hoses, air filter, plugs. I did buy a second hand maf from Carl but he said it was all fine before I got it I have even cut out and run new wires to the maf?? I'm quickly running out of ideas and patience.

Adrian E 7th June 2011 08:45 AM

I'm currently getting 15mpg around town and no better than 20mpg on a run :D Got a whole 19.9mpg average on v-power on a run to Swindon on Sunday - when I work it out as a tank average, the economy I calculate is slightly worse than the figures above, which are what the on board display tells me...

Curtis 27th July 2011 12:17 PM

at idle mine is telling me its using 51.9liters/100km. not sure what the issue is there.
Cat has been removed thought might be the cause.

The_Laird 27th July 2011 02:43 PM

Ouch!

My 2.8 used to average around 25mpg according to the on board computer and better on a run. As one of the real mpg saddo's, I've got nearly a year's worth of data on the S8 - every tank for around 20K miles - and it's averaging a little over 21.

And I can even find data to end the arguement about getting better mpg from premium fuel (BP Ultimate, etc). You do get better mpg - about 3.5% according to my figures - but that's not quite enough to compensate for the price hike (although the 'looking after your expensive engine' arguement still holds). In effect, if you take into account the better fuel consumption, the premium fuel costs about 2p per litre more than normal fuel.

I really must get out more...

Watch that all too fragile ZF 5HP24 while you're at it, hehehehe.

Nollywood 27th August 2011 05:07 PM

I brimmed my tank, and zeroed the odometer. So far, as at today I've done 380.1 miles exactly. I have just under a quarter of a tank left, range is indicating 75 miles.

DIS indicates 19 - 21 mpg around town, and 26 - 30 on a long run at 70 mph. I'm curious to see what I'll get when the warning lamp comes on, and when the range is showing 0.

ainarssems 27th August 2011 09:47 PM

Be careful when running down to 0 if you have not done it before and keep a can with spare fuel in boot just in case as some cars run out of fuel before reaching 0, some shortly after reaching 0 and some like mine can do another 30 miles while showing 0 and still not run out.

When I get new car I always run down to 0 and beyond as much as I dare with a can in boot just to test how far can it go to know the limit for the future. Not on diesels though as I do not fancy bleeding a system in the middle of road.

Great tip. I've got a spare jerry in the trunk though, in readiness. +++

Nollywood 29th August 2011 05:36 PM

Well, as at today I've achieved 402.3 miles, with a possible 35 miles indicated range. I have a jerry in the trunk, I'll put that in tomorrow. In theory, it may be possible to cover at least 20 miles more, but I'm not keen on running completely dry, and stalling on a major road.
