Fair market price on "Fat 5" wheels
Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post or not, so feel free to move or delete.
Basically I'm interested to know what the fair price is for a set of 4 8.5J * 18 "Fat Five" wheels as there's a set on eBay that I'm "pondering". Obviously condition is a factor and these are not perfect, but I won't go into details on that - though general comments would be welcome on how condition affects value. If the seller is a regular here, apologies, but the location doesn't match to anyone who has "declared" themselves. |
Are you talking about Avus rims that were standard on most S8s?
|
Avus's are 6 spoke..
The fat 5's are the RS6 standard ones.... +++ |
|
D'oh! So that's me and Ian wrong then lol
Are they available in the correct PCD? Thought they were mainly 5x100 A3 etc fitment? Value mainly dependant on tyres to be honest - wheels only I'd say about £50 each if they're in good but not perfect order. £75 a wheel if they're mint - obviously that's if they're a private sale. |
I still maintain that Fat 5's are the Rs6 ones - Those are the 17" (D2) or 18" (D3) non-sport wheels that come as standard on the lower models, each to their own, but its the last design I'd choose to downgrade to... +++

So what would you consider as an alternative to 18" Avus, or wouldn't you? |
20" 9 spoke RS4 design as per 2002 models.... No contest, its just the best wheel out there.....
Failing that, I think the 6 spoke Avus is probably the pick of the 18"'s as it represents the flagship model... |

The Fat 5's were the wheels that were fitted to D3 A8's. The RS6 wheels were never referred to as Fat 5's. They were referred to simply as RS6 wheels, or S-Lines (17/18").
I had a set of Fat 5's on my old B6 A4 3,0 Quattro Avant, purchased from an Audi Main Dealership. Somehow, they look larger than the D2 S8 wheels, despite being the same size. +++ |
Getting too expensive...
Well I'm no longer "pondering" as they're heading above my budget now.
Still a week to go, 8 different bidders already, over £350 for a set of 4, reserve not yet met. :-( And the tyres fitted are surely wrong (215/40 on 8.5J rims). :( |
That's way too narrow - suggests a 'stretched' look on a much smaller car?
|
Try this for size - photo of the sidewall angle!

(I was really just illustrating how stupidly narrow the tyres the "Fat Five" seller had put on the wheels - that pic is from his eBay listing) How wide ARE the wheels in your picture - presumably the rears are wider than the fronts? Are they from a Porsche or similar? |

they are a staggered set up - Front wheels: 9J-21-ET32 255/30/ZR21 Rear wheels : 10.5J-21-ET35 295/25/ZR21 no spacers just the coilovers on the front to lower it a bit since those pics as per my sig pic |
Well I've gone in another direction now, so no "Fat Fives" for me!
I was fundamentally trying to get a 2nd set of wheels so that I could have a full set with winter tyres. One possible direction was some nice new "summer wheels" and then use the old 18" Avus for winter (bit of a shame though) but today I've solved this differently (see another thread). +++ |
