S8 power steering noise

After being told that the 3 power steering pumps that had been changed were all faulty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This morning I thought balls to it I sick of hearing the whining noise so I set about it myself , found the reservoir filter completely blocked solid with crap !!!!!!! So took it out and cleaned with brake cleaner then dried also removed half a pint of fluid to get to max on dipstick !!!!! Hey presto I can hear my engine on tickover makes you wonder if the so called kids in the know are tuned in !!!???? In my case they are most certainly not !!!!!!!!!?

Good idea. I'll check mine

Is the filter common to all models, or just those with servotronic?

Hi mate I think it's just on the servotronic ones I'm not 100% though but I'd check anyway !

My D2 was a PF without Servotronic :)

Mine makes a similar sound to what you have described. Car's off the road at the mo, but will definitely have a look at this. Thanks +++

Didn't bloody work in my case :(

Seems the noise is coming from a pully on the left hand side of the engine as you look at it from the front.

Thanks for the tip though, my filter was clogged +++

D3 owners suffer the same problem. at 55k service the power steering level should be checked according to Audi and topped up. It is normal for it to use a bit over the years. Mine was sitting right on minimum and did whine slightly.

You need to completely remove the entire right hand airbox (looking at the car from the front of the engine) and the bottle is under the headlight. Top up, rotate left and right fully a few times to bleed it, cap it.

Jobs a fish.
