S8 Final Edition For Sale

Hi everyone.

Ive been looking at replacing my FL 2000 with a newer Final Edition and I'm going to see this one on Sunday. Seems to have loads of options including RNS E and it's a great colour.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3358814.htm

Does anyone know this car?

Cheers,

Antony.

Don't know the car, but dolphin grey is a rare colour on the '8 and looks lovely - saw one at ADI and with diamond cut 20s it really set it off.

That isn't a Final Edition by the way, far too high spec for that!

If you buy it, bank on having Lepsons refurb the wheels diamond cut - they just really suit it and painted rims wouldn't look half as good. It will cost, however.

There's some nice options on that car - heated screen is pretty rare, all round dimming mirrors not that common either (check they've not gone bronze all over and that there's a distinctive ring around the edge to check the glass is actually self dimming on the external mirrors - they're north of £100 each!), plus the RNS-E with bluetooth is well worth having (got it in mine)

Plenty of evidence of consistent maintenance which is nice. Be good to know that the box has had the oil changed regularly through its life, or that its been replaced fairly recently. Also whether the tyres are a decent brand.

Hope its as good as it sounds +++

A very nice example, never knew they were available (or could be specified) in Dolphin Grey.

The_Laird 1st November 2011 07:29 PM

I think the gurus here will confirm that Dolphin Grey was not an FE colour - but it's my favourite. I wish Mike was around to lend me his 'special sock'; this looks lovely! If I was shopping for an S8, I'd be going to see this one.

tonyt102 1st November 2011 08:50 PM

So what do you think to the price?

Adrian E 1st November 2011 09:11 PM

It's a buyers market - assuming it's a private sale and it's all as it should be then about £5k waved in his face should buy it. I can't imagine people will be queuing round the block.....

Bare in mind Amar/Ian's old A/S8 is priced around the same money with many toys but sounding like it needs at least some money spending on it if a cat has failed.

I'd price up the wheel refurb though and take that into account

tonyt102 1st November 2011 09:55 PM

Thanks Adrian.

I thought Ian had sold his? I even thought that this might be it.

Adrian E 1st November 2011 10:00 PM

It's this ad:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3293362.htm

Discussed somewhere on here too, think Amar posted that it needs a replacement cat sourcing.

I'd go for the one you've found anyway - love dolphin grey (my A6 is) and it really suits the '8 - but useful as a potential indicator of value.

IT 1st November 2011 10:41 PM

That Dolphin grey looks nice, well presented, but it has got 120K on the clock, and theres lots more around that might be better value for money... That ex Rowan Atkinson one is still knocking about, Murple with special order leather, I was half tempted on that myself... +++

This is the one Ian is referring to:

topgolfer1 2nd November 2011 10:03 AM

Just had my 20 inch wheels refurbed at Lepsons.Having them diamond cut rather than painted, the total cost including stainless valves rather then black rubber ones, was £485 inc vat for a set of four.+++
By the way,my S8 is Dolphin Grey and have to agree with Adrian, does look sublime, that colour with the wheels in that finish, but then I might be slightly biased
Hope that helps.

tonyt102 2nd November 2011 06:02 PM

Love the blue one but not keen on the interior.

Ian - I know what you mean, it may be slightly high on price for the miles but I guess I'll see the exact condition on Sunday.

Singh 2nd November 2011 07:46 PM

Worth looking at my old one too. You simply won't find a better specc'd D2 anywhere.

jayzee 3rd November 2011 09:31 PM

And ex-golfing legend Nick Faldo's car +++

tonyt102 3rd November 2011 09:33 PM

Seems like these cars are often owned by the rich and famous, the previous owner of my current S8 is the Duke of Beford!

briang9 3rd November 2011 10:13 PM

Mine was originally owned by the slightly less rich and famous Jimmy Nail, a competent enough actor I think, and I will be ever gratefull he chose to have the satin black option for the chrome. Still cant forgive him for Crocodile Shoes though,

Thanks, saw that ad recently but didn't connect.....
Tempting.

What's the deal on LPG these days, IIRC the tax situation has degraded somewhat?

Adrian E 4th November 2011 11:14 AM

If you're not attempting to recoup the cost of the original installation then it's a definite winner if you're looking for better economy +++

Numbers don't really add up for a new install unless you do quite a few miles and as Amar will tell you if he reads this, he didn't like driving it on gas :D

Singh 4th November 2011 11:57 AM

Yeah, I was commenting to someone the other day how glad I am I don't have to drive all the way to Kenilworth to fill up. It took up boot space, I had to crouch down so my butt was nearly skimming the floor to fill up, range was crap, guage not as accurate as a petrol one, local garage refused to touch it, I had to have the car recovered all the way to Unit 20 in Chester when it broke down (LPG related) Martin had it fixed in no time. You couldn't easily swap a coilpack/change the sparks as all the LPG pipe work was in the way, it still used petrol, the LPG system needs to be serviced, the LPG system can be expensive if it goes wrong, no tax reductions, insurance is probably higher with it, people in the petrol station would curse you for stopping at the middle pump rather then the one in front which meant they couldn't fill up, it isn't always feasible to approach everyone and explain only the middle pump had LPG, it's a pain in the arse to find LPG stations when out of town (the only time I did do a longer journey and LPG might have been useful) I could go on. I think the S8 with LPG does the finically equivalent of 30 MPG which is what an A8 4.2 will do anyway, so if I were doing lots of commuting I'd just buy a D2 A8 4.2 instead or D3 TDI. I stopped using LPG in the end and stuck to V Power. The guy on here with the drift cars and the D3 has a neat install though, whoever changed the engine made a mess of mine but Martin sorted it out, I understand it was actually dangerous at one point.

RanjS8 5th November 2011 11:57 AM

Lpg

I think Amar has been a bit harsh on LPG....I think it
really depends on howmany miles you are planning to do....I like v8 cos the engines are pretty much indestructible for my driving style but I do a lot if miles(last year and half I have 35000 miles in the a8)which is not ideal on petrol...

I think if you find a descent installer and go for a prins...it's not too bad....with my installation the injectors sit across the intake manifold...so changing spark plugs and coil packs isn't an issue....with Amar's the injectors were sitting across the engine cover for some reason...so I think it was just a poor installation....

tonyt102 5th November 2011 10:46 PM

Gutted... I was supposed to go and see the car tomorrow morning but I got an email from the seller saying it was has sold. Just got the cash sorted too.

Adrian E 6th November 2011 12:28 PM

Bummer - I know someone on Audi srs site was interested in this but comms dried up last week...

The_Laird 6th November 2011 02:26 PM

If it's any consolation, I saw this a little over a year or so ago when I was looking for my S8. It was in Fife or there abouts and, IIRC, was a bit scuffed and slightly tatty inside. A driver with a hefty ring obviously had a nervous twitch and there were marks on a lot of the trim. Even though it was my ideal colour, I walked away.

And now whoever did buy it, is getting rid again - something not quite right perhaps?

Go see Amr's! :)

tonyt102 6th November 2011 09:56 PM

That sounds about right, the chap said he bought it from up that way.

Still on the look. Found another on in Watford which is the same colour but it's £7k!

The next one is going to have to be special as there isn't actually anything wrong with my current S8 and looks amazing. Although it's done 166k, it drives faultlessly. I may even just spend the money on upgrading mine. The two main upgrades I want are the RNS E and 20" FE alloys.

RanjS8 10th November 2011 12:06 AM

New a8/s8

It is difficult finding another a8 or s8 these days that is totally mint. I remember John took me for a spin in his left hand drive s8, and it seemed faultless...except that one of the piston rings on the engine had worn away due to the nikisil problem and now was leaking oil....but if you didnt know...you couldnt tell until it started drinking oil and you developed a bit of misfire every couple of months as the spark plug would become fouled.....

Thats what stops me from moving on and just upgrading my current a8....I know the engine is good...and when it fails it wont owe me anything so...I'll happy to fix it when the time comes....

In short I think it takes alot of luck in finding the right car...no matter how careful you look...

tonyt102 11th November 2011 10:54 PM

Well I've been to see a few S8's now, some with half the miles of my own and they're no better. I think I've got an exceptional one here so I'm going to keep it and start improving. Mechanically, it's perfect and I know it inside/out, so first of all I'm going to get on with the RNS-E or Dynavin upgrade. Can't really find many people who have fitted the Dynavin to the 8. Thers's a thread on here but it doesn't go anywhere. Also had my eye on some FE alloys although they seem to be very expensive, may wait until after Christmas.
