My rnse install into my pf a8
1 Attachment(s)
Well I managed to obtain a double din fascia from a8parts a couple weeks ago
At present, I have just managed to cut the rnse fascia down to size.... I am now waiting for some other bits.... 1.I have decided to try update the wood interior effect with the carbon fibre effect...so now waiting for the roll to come through. 2.In the mean time I need to work out which adapter I need to connect the rnse to my car 3.Cos the pf doesnt have canbus...I have ordered Facelift instrument cluster from a8 parts....(I have found a diy on line on how to link into the canbus wiring so hopefully all should go well. 4.My car didnt have satnav...so I will need to source the satnav module to go on to the boot also....That should be fun.... Watch this space.... |
I'd just put a modern gps antenna behind the dash - a LOT less hassle and prob more effective too. Should be able to get 1 from wherever you get your wiring adaptor from :)
|
Gps reciever
I saw those on the kufatec website...but I wasn't sure it would work due to the double windows.
But if it does then great...I ll do that n put a box on the back for the look in time. |
It should work fine - it'll be 'looking' through the windscreen from under the dash anyway. It'll be easy enough to test when you 1st install the RNS-E and you can check how many satellites it's picking up in one of the nav screens. About 6 ought to be average - can always compare to Amar's RS6 RNS-E if it happens to be close by to check it's getting comparable reception for the location +++
I wouldn't bother with the box on the tailgate - it's just something else to leak etc if you retrofit. |
Leaks
I didn't consider leaks through the bonnet...I ll just go with the reciever under the dash for now

Depends which windscreen you have. Test with standalone SatNav like TomTom or the one in phone inside car. If it works then internal aerial will be fine.
I had heat reflecting windscreen in mine and SatNav was not working inside car. I have since changed windscreen to regular and it works fine. |
My OEM satnav aerial on the boot lid packed up ages ago and I couldn't (then) find a replacement at a "reasonable" price.
So I bought a thin little (30mm square) black cheap one off eBay and mounted it at the very bottom of the rear screen on the outside, so it's just in front of the OEM one. Gets a good signal and you just don't notice it's there. Connecting it up I went a rather circuituous route, actually taking the cable under the boot rim rubber seal round to the nearside hinge mechanisms then followed the route (in reverse) of the original cable (retained) into the boot lid and connected it in there. It was just easier to work on that way. The cable is very thin (2 or 3 mm) so no problems at all, but the duct tape holding it in places is less than elegant, though only visible with the boot open. The connector was different to the audi OEM one so I actually cut the OEM lead inside the boot lid and fitted a matching male/female connector pair into that of the same type as the new aerial. That way I can reconnect an OEM aerial if I get one in future, or easily replace this one (which I have once so far). |
You will need to have the facelift instrument cluster coded to the car I'm quite sure, you should have gone for an S8 one as you get the white dials too and they look much better then an A8 one. Get a £10 GPS receiver from eBay and throw it behind the satnav somewhere, works fine. Worst case scenario as I understand it if the canbus doesn't work then the unit won't switch off when you pull the key out or light up when you put the lights on, it won't display sat nav instructions on a D2 with or without canbus anyway, just track names. Your going to have to make it work now you've cut it to size. It looks good in there. Speak to Ben Wardle at Shark Performance about coding, he's a top guy.

That is a great effort mate! +++ Once that's in carbon, that will look very sweet!

Facelift instrument cluster
My facelift instrument cluster came today....and started looking at a guide to the pins on the instrument cluster.
Found it thanks to the interior repairs sticky....but i didnt realise that the plugs at the back of instrument cluster were 32 pin where as preface lift are 26 pin. So gona need a few of those plastic connector....TPS will be my next stop I guess. There is no connection for the oil level sensor in the pf...so gona have to work this one out ....ie fudge it....think i ll google this one and work it out from there..... I ordered the necessary wiring from kufatec yesterday...hopefully by the time that arrives...i will have the new instrument cluster in.... I m so tempted to get the aluminium dash rings as well now....but I think i might be going off track with that one...so that mod will have to wait for now. |
Do the dash rings at the same time, wack some kiwi magic show polish on the RNS E too. Then put the final editions back on. Will look good.
|
That install looks better resolved than the later cars like mine! With it trimmed up so close it looks less of an afterthought - well done :)

So, just marry up all the connections from pre to post face and it will basically work. Done forget though the facelift cars have a menu button in the cup holder slots - You'll need to get one of those for completeness to control the cluster properly +++ |
rnse install
menu button in the cup holders...now thats a new one to me....but I ll look into it.
Well I ordered the connectors from tps today...should arrive tomorrow. Fortunately the radio clock connector is the same on both clusters...so dont need that one. I was comparing the wiring point between the clusters...and I have a couple of points I m not sure about....maybe some one could enlighten me. 1. Where do the earth connections go from the pf instrument cluster to the fl instrument cluster....I think its something to do with the canbus wiring but not sure 2. Where do the illumination wires connect on the fl cluster Thanks for your help and comments guys really appreciate it. F |
Updating instrument cluster
Hi guys
I have put together an excel file which shows the pin connector diagram on the left for the pf and on the right for the fl. In between I have typed in where i am going to take the pin connector from pf cluster on to the fl cluster. There is a few I am stuck on and so would appreciate some help in finding out where to connect them. I have shaded the pins, which I am unsure of where to connect. |
excel file
Didnt realise one cant actually upload excel files
Will have to work out another way to display the information. |
Hey Ranj i know it's not the best but take a photo of the screen with excel open
|
Or press print screen and paste the file as an image :) (use mspaint if your on Windows)
|
Or save as csv and you may be able to upload that, if not change the extension to .txt and upload
|
Uploading connections
I tried txt but looked very confusing...will try csv file...that should work....will do that later tonite....
|
the connections so far for instrument cluster
1 Attachment(s)
Here is the excel file in csv format. I have changed the extension to txt. So to make it work in excel, i think one will have to change the extension to csv first, and then open it comma delimited.
The spreadsheet is arranged so the cluster pin information for the pf is on the left and for the fl on the right. In the middle I have put where I could connect the appropriate wire from pf to fl. If someone could have a look and tell me if it is correct...and confirm the pins I m unsure about...that would be great. Today....wasnt so great I supposedly order the three cluster plugs for the fl instrument cluster yesterday....blue/green and grey....instead today I got two green plugs....so will go back to tps to sort it out. Fortunately they are only the down road from me.....but I post the part numbers when i have them for anyone else as they are quite tricky to find on etka. |
Connections Updated

I have updated the text file with the appropriate connections...so please ignore the previous file I uploaded.

Rns e Pin Code retrieval and yes it is in the a8!!!!!
The past few days have been quite productive and at the same time satisfactory.
I managed to get the double din fascia into my a8....I changed the wood appearance of the trim to carbon effect with some 3m dimoc stuff off ebay...and the wiring from kufatec arrive so I managed to get the rnse in there and working..... All that took 30 secs to write....and about 3 days to do.... Full of trouble and strife along the way.... 1. To do the carbon effect I used bits of information from the following links....1.Carbon Trim thread from D2-Interior Section .....2.Elsawin to find out how to remove the dash wood trim ....3.Audipages info to pull the centre fascia and the armrest centre console. I got the carbon fibre wrap off ebay....it was about 30 quid and I just needed one length of 300 by 600 to do the whole car. Putting the double din fascia was another story.... Well the single din fascia is actually smaller than the double din fascia and so the double din fascia doesnt actually just slip in as it should....when you pull out the single din fascia there is a bar that goes across the bottom to give the single din fascia support....now rather than replace the whole upper dash....I just hack sawed this little bar out (I did think of using a grinder...but then thought maybe sparks flying behind the dash wasnt necessarily a good thing....lol)....so persevered with the hack saw...fortunately only takes about 10 mins to do.... Once that bar is out the double din fascia slips in perfectly.... The RNS E...... Next up the RNS e....well I havent got it working 100% as yet....but it is in there....and it will play music....but it wont update the location even though I have attached a satnav antenna to it....And I still have to get the fl instrument cluster in so it has canbus feed off the car....until I do this there are no lights on the unit....which i think are linked to the can bus.... ] To wire it into the existing wiring was a doddle...just ordered cable from kufatec....there isnt an adapter available for the a8....so ordered the closest a6 one....but i also needed the ariel adapter.... Now the biggest stumbling block I had was the code to get the rns e working in the first place. When I purchased the rns e, I forgot to ask about the pin code. So imagine my initial shock horror...when I started it up and it asked for the code..... Well I contacted the seller and he was no use.....so it was either a case of bin it and buy a new one...or find a way.....and fortunately I found a way....which I think will be useful to others that may find themselves in this predicament....and believe it or not I did it for nothing...did pay a dime to anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well first off to find the pin code...one needs the serial number for the rns e Now with the rns c, that i had this was engraved on the metal on the side. So i thought this would be similar for the rns e. But when I looked around it, there was none to be found. Furthermore...I was looking for a number beginning with AUZ....it was no where...absolutely no where....I looked on box that the rns e came with....which when I did comparisons turned out to be for a completely different unit...on the rns e unit itself nothing but a reference to something called aisin and bunch of numbers.... So I just started pluggin the numbers into google and came across the site below...http://www.codecard.lt/car-radio/aud.../prod_392.html..... On this page, I found out that the pin code was part of the serial number....and only way to get the serial number was to retrieve it from the unit itself....which I think is possible using vag com...however my unit hasnt been paired with the infotainment system yet....or by get that cd that is reference on the site...but how did i know it worked and i certainly didnt want to pay 99 dollars for pleasure of messing the rnse up.... So I decided to google the unlocking cd...and there in lay my answer... http://carradio.forumr.net/t8-audi-a...ISIN+UNLOCK+CD This link takes you to a cd isofile, which one would need to retrieve the pincode from the rns e. All you do is create a cd using the above isofile with clonecd, and then follow the instruction on the other link. Hey presto you not only unlock the rns e but also obtain the pin code....very very very useful indeed.... BTW I m not sure this would work with newer rns e's...so my advice would be MAKE SURE YOU GET THE PIN CODE WHEN YOU BUY ONE...... I have still have lots to do...to get the rns e working properly...but i m just glad to get this far....and sound is now awesome on the bose system....whoopeeee.... Things to do..... 1..Get sat nav working how it should 2..Get bluetooth integrated 3..Reversing camera and AV module .... will have pics soon...was too dark tonite....damn my iphone with no flash |
An interesting thing I've noticed with rns-e and Bose is that the front/rear balance is way off 50:50 otherwise you get no sound coming from the rear
I didn't notice until my wife mentioned she couldn't hear it properly when she was sprog watching on a long journey. I sat in the back to try and get the balance right |
Is your RNS-E properly coded for an A8 with Bose Adrian?
|
Yep, far as I know anyway! Was all done professionally so can't imagine they didn't do something. The rns-e knows it has Bose as there's no option to vary volume with speed as its automatic with Bose
Guess since the rns-e came out of something much smaller it may have had a different speaker setup, balance wise? |
RNS-E has different codings for different cars and Bose/non-Bose too. Might be worth checking (also could be a problem with your Bose amp).
|
Sounds good Ranj, the RNS E takes a speed signal or something from the car, I think it's the same one people snip when they want to activate TV in motion. With this feed the sat nav should work. I'm not sure how your going to do that though.
|

I checked and I have the fader set 4 clicks to the rear, although it could probably be 3 clicks if I could be bothered to use my cloth ears a bit better to decide if I've got it right from the front and rear! |

Alternitively, if you get the fix, but no movement, maybe you're just missing GALA, and that would have been on the loom for the original stereo anyway, so easy fix.... +++ |
Thats the one, the gala feed. Check your receiving satellites. I think you need to click on info or something and it will tell you how many it is receiving. If you are you just need to hook the gala up, then go for a short drive for it to collaborate
|
I've never had a reception issue using a standard Navman GPS attached to my windscreen so I can only assume my glass is not affecting the signal too greatly. From my experience I would have said any external GPS aerial on the dash board should work Heated windscreens are the real killer.

rnse satellite pick up
The rns e wasnt locking into my position yesterday. But I will try again today. I was wondering how does one check for the satellite pick up???
Well....today I m going to attempt to put the facelift instrument cluster in....I have feeling things are gona get worse before they get better for now.... I ve been pondering over how to emulate the oil level feed...normally one could just place a resistor in series between the live and earth feed from the oil level sensor...how as this is canbus....the instrument cluster module will be looking for a signal from the oil sensor maintaining a voltage difference between the canbus feeds....I presume when the oil is too low the difference between the voltage will go to 0 and hence trigger the warning light....so I must somehow maintain that voltage difference....the simplest way may be to just tap into the high canbus voltage wire for say the coolant level sensor and feed it in there.....????? NOT SURE IF THAT WILL WORK BUT I WILL TRY IT AND SEE..... If someone could advise me on my above thought process, I would appreciate it. |
I would be surprised if it uses CANbus for sending signal from oil level sensor to instrument panel. I would expect it to be either simple switch-on/off or a resistor
|
You push one of the buttons on the side of the big dial thing on the right of the unit it should say 'nav info' or something. Bring it around if you can't do it.

Instrument Cluster Upgrade from PF to FL
Well I ve almost changed the connections over to the new plugs. However I was unsure on a few of the connections...if anyone knows where they should go that would be great...otherwise I ll leave them until I know better.
The wires I was unsure about are: Yellow Connector 26 Air Conditioner Compressor Off Green Connector 8 Door Lock (Output) 21 Charge Indicator 25 Airbag (Active) 26 ABS (Sila) Red Connector 9 Gear Indicator 13 Service Life Signal of ABS system 18 Rev Counter Signal 22 Speed Signal (Output 2) ....If the oil level sensor doesnt run off canbus...then simple resistor will make it so much easier...spose I could try that first. My GPS antenna works but not inside the car....but it does work in the boot....so I ll have to place in the boot and feed it through from there...which shouldnt be too difficult.... |
Quote:
Easy enough from there to run the lead (if it's thin) along/under the boot lid rubber seal to the inside (though I actually didn't do it that way). |
Gps reciever
I managed to get a signal while the reciever was in the boot...So I plan to place it where the cd changer is....But I do like the idea of having the gps box on the boot just for show...kinda classy I tink...
