my exhaust idea, in put required please :-)
ok so I’m looking at reviewing my quad system in January some time I would like to have the standard system put back on under the car cut down short so it’s out of the way and not seen with the tails extended to face the floor and a set of valves fitted to bypass through to the quads on the rear , I would like it to be silent and then at the flick of a switch send the gas to the quads and have the roar, lately I feel like the comfort has been compromised somewhat due to the low profile tires and the drone of the exhaust, the car just seems like it’s an effort to drive lately the tires seem to follow any pattern on the road they are 245/45/18 at the moment, do you think I could get away with 245/55/18 or 245/50/18 ? Thoughts would be great, don’t want any rubbing of arches also would this affect the Speedo by a large extent?
This is a link to the valves I’m thinking of for the exhaust http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QTP-Dual-3...#ht_2710wt_760 And this is a picture of what I drew up with what I have in mind, I’m no Picasso I know but you get the idea? http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/myidea-1.jpg thoughts ? would this seem an idea that would work? with the cars removed there is plenty of room to shuffle things around i think |
Mate, that would work very well I think; but hugely expensive?
Can you not adapt the system off a D3 s8 with valves and mufflers - with D2 pipework and bends... Basically the pipework you already have? Maybe this would be even more expensive? I don't know. Just a thought :) |
Food for thought, i will have a look on the pricing, however i do already have the quad system on the car is more of a case of adapting whats there with the standard system thats in the shed,

standard one that was removed |
You can also make switch for on-off auto for valve opening taking signal from intake manifold switch-over for the auto function
|
Thats a good idea i could do that also, i would like a button though so that i can be in full control of the valves if i want to rev it up standing still or any thing like that i can
|
I meant switch with 3 positions: on -off-auto, maybe even 4 positions with 2 auto's 1 to come on with 2nd stage of intake manifold and other with 3rd.

Anyone know how that will 'sit' with the MOT people?
I always thought that an exhaust had to exit either clear of the sill, or the rear vallance, ie clear of the vehicle because of fume ingress or something like that not to mention that it now would have 2 exhaust systems! An old Zodie (V6) of mine had a mechanical cable pull switch to an exhaust 'gate', to a 'Thrush - outsider' and a standard-ish exhaust, it also had nitrous too :) before I'm arrested by the 'taste police', it was a bargain, & I bought it like that (metalflake green & all!) In my defence - it was a long time ago (early '80's) Oh Dear |

Wonderful style statement. +++ http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3339/...3e197fe251.jpg |
i do like the idea of 1-2-3 stages on the switch side +++
night train you are correct that any gasses that come from the engine must come clear of the valance, so i might have to ether have it tap back into the quads so that the gas passes through both the standard system under the car then into the quads then have the switch over from std to quads however this would more than likely require 4 valves in total, or i could just see weather there are any fumes inside or not and if so have the pipes extended out , but im sure when the car is moving the gas would just disperse would it not ? and when stationary just switch to the quads to be safe ? |

Yes HPSauce..... That very model and year too :) Much more lurid paint though, my friends referred to it as 'The Jolly Green Giant' :) Bench seats, column change..... what the youth of today are missing (unless they have a Huuuge estate car) ;) (conspiratorial wink) |
Similar concept ro the Xhaust I have.
The De-Cat and X Pipe is a must... I have 2 pipes front to back with different Silencer set-up and a Valve on the Loud Pipe which is controlled by a button in the centre consol. I like the QTP3 Valves..... Tx for the Link.... I do feel the Sleeper Xhaust could create Fumes that might be unpleasent if sitting in Traffic.... Mebe not but I would try move the outlet as far back as posssible. It's a reasonably simple mod that brings out the true sound of the Big 8.... but one must have the option to Get off the Track and back into Suburbia... when you want to just trundle around in a civilized manner  Be keen to see the result on this one.... :) |
I don't reckon that you'd need more than 2 valves Guy, the gas, like water will take the easiest (less restrictive) route out, all I'd do is join in your street stealth system into your quads, one out of each side of the 'stealth' to its corresponding side on the quads....
Are you going to be fitting 'cherry bombs' on the 'strip' mode to give a modicum of damping of sound through the quads? The reason I say this, is that my Harley Davidson is on straight throughs (no baffles) and if I'm riding it for more than 20 minutes, I have to wear ear plugs, I've tried the iPod route, but even at full volume at 60-70mph I can't hear Motorhead at full blast inside the crash helmet! (just to give an idea of noise levels) Sounds bl00dy wonderful though :) |
it is already running with a box on each side of the quads and also a twin set of boxes further down by the X pipe so that should not be a problem, i did think of getting a custom box made to go where the cats were to baffle every noise known to man but no after market boxes iv ever heard are as quiet as standard so a few mods to the back box and centre box and throw some valves in there should be interesting any way
|
something like this you mean ?
http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/a...ke/myidea2.jpg again no picasso but you get the idea |
That looks like Thunderbird 3 !! :D
|
I would have thought that arrangement would do the trick nicely Guy :)

That might help you. Uses a throttle cable arrangement but easy enough to motor up. Or alternatively use some older throttle bodys which are electric and just pulse the solenoid at different intervals. I would go simular arrangement to the D3 S8. Keep your quad look, but then use the outer pipes for quiet, and the inner for loud :D Simpler to do as same exhaust, then you just use a valve to direct one through the silencers, or the others through the straight through.... |
