For Sale - Audi S8 4.2 V8 (2000) LPG & Petrol

5 Attachment(s)
Hello, first post...and not a happy one. By the time I got around to joining an Audi forum my S8 has already broken and it is with great disappointment that I have to sell it due to insufficient funds to invest in it.
I have owned the car for only seven months and have used it and enjoyed it on a number of road trips as well as daily jollies.

The car had four new tyres a few hundred miles ago and had full service 40 miles ago (Russell Automotive).
The service book has a couple of gaps in it but it is quite well stamped over the 12 years.
The MOT expires at the end of June.

The engine has an LPG conversion which has no noticeable effect on the performance when driving sensibly (I think it feels faster and sounds superb on petrol) and reduces cost per mile significantly.
The interior is in great condition and well equipped (with nearly all available options), clean and cigarette smoke free; it benefits from an upgraded sat nav/tv/mp3/bluetooth phone/cd multi changer with sound delivered through upgraded speakers and amp; The heated, fully electric seats are leather & alacantra; alacantra headlining; electric rear blind and rear side blinds; original first aid kit in the rear arm rest; solar panelled sun roof, duel climate control; parking sensors all around; all electronic adjusters, aids and lights work. Its a very nice place to sit and drive.
The exterior is in good condition for its age with only a few small scuffs on the bumpers and wheels.
The spare wheel, jack, warning triangle and accessories are in the boot.
For some reason there are blue flashing repeaters behind the front grill which are operated with a blue button inside the car (there is also a red button but I haven't identified what it does yet).

The serious issues that force my hand are as follows; in the last 3 weeks the transmission has developed a fault where it jumps out of gear after hard braking. Russell Automotive recommends a gearbox oil and filter change before panicking, but I panicked because of the following; the engine is misfiring on one cylinder, and that cylinder has very low compression. I couldn't pay for this issue to be investigated so the mystery remains.

Also the service and pre-MOT inspection revealed some age related parts that need replacing such as outer cv gaiter, prop shaft flange seal, upper suspension link, gearbox sump gasket... I was advised (Russell Automotive) that it is business as usual and no worse than other S8's of this age.

Additionally there is also a crack in the outer glass of the rear passenger side window where a pigeon flew into it at speed (£35 from A8spares.co.uk). I stupidly bought the wrong side.
Also the inner door handle of the drivers door annoyingly stopped working last week (around £50 supplied and fitted at Russell Automotive).

Sounds horrendous but there is a lot that's good about this car. I am hoping someone will make me an offer (over the £750 suggested by A8spares)

Car is available to view in Harpenden, Hertfordshire or Mill Hill.

REPAIR or SPARES

Please contact me here or email me on paul.gray77@gmail.com, more pictures available on request

If you think I am being short sighted here then please advise me on the sensible options...

Hi Paul - Not keen on first posters coming on purely to sell their car - but - you've made some effort in the description, and I have to sympathise with your problems.....

Mileage would be useful, as would some more photos - Particularly of the interior... +++

Engine and gearbox fault does make it a bit of a lemon for most people, which is a pity as it would no doubt have been a pretty special example when it was working.

Might want to give us some idea of what you're hoping for it - Given what it will likely cost to fix, it probably is destined for spares only, which makes £750 not far off the mark sadly.....

p.s. Its a8parts, not a8spares... +++

Fair offer from A8 Parts, as they have to store/dismantle/advertise it and then make money.

RNS E is worth £550 all day long, another £50 with the wiring it will have in the back to convert it froma D, Neil will have it off you. The wheels another £4/500. So you've got a grand there already.

Good luck with the sale, car looks great by the way. +++

Looks a pretty well specified S8, the RNS-E fitment and LPG are attractive. However, engine and tranny issues are a killer. The engine issues is particularly bad, given the D2 V8 engine's Alusil-coated bores.

Any idea what you'll accept for her?

I wish I had your mechanical skills, and a ramp. I would snap these cars up.

My apologies; I didn't expect my first post to be the sale of my car really! and for the mistake in company name.

Thank you for your reply and your support.

The car has covered just over 121,000 miles to date.

Having spent time browsing the forums, I had prepared myself for the news that the car wasn't worth anything with the stated issues.
Bearing that in mind I was hoping to reclaim as much of the £4500 that I put into the car as possible. The £250 I was offered a few days ago and the £750 by A8parts are hard to stomach!

I'll post interior pictures as soon as.

Easily £1500 - £2000 worth even with the problems I imagine. If you can spanner even slightly I would be breaking it, lots of money in that car +++

Singh 29th March 2012 08:28 PM

Go on, Ian. People have been saying that you've been lacking in the 'projects' department as of late.

:) thanks for your confidence... however I think the parts would de-value very quickly if I start doing DIY on it!

Ian, pleaseee fit me a rear view camera for my RNSE. +++

I've seen this really cool one on eBay that slots in where the numberplate goes so no drilling required. I could probably do it myself but it will be messy.

Hi there. Thanks for your interest. The car is in Harpenden, Hertfordshire and occasionally in North London.

Paul 30th March 2012 09:57 PM

Thank you all for your interest in my car. I have received a couple of unexpected offers.

Tomorrow (Saturday) I will post further pictures of the car; I will then make contact with those of you who have shown interest and close a deal.

Thanks again for your interest so far.... i hope it is still there tomorrow :)

Looks pretty good externally, just a shame with regards the motor, the ZF5HP-24 failure has been well documented, so not really much of a surprise.

Those blue lamps behind the grille are interesting...do they flash at the same time, or alternately?

Paul 31st March 2012 09:01 PM

I think the 'red button' changes the flash pattern. At the moment they flash together.

I drove to Southend when I first got the car and hadn't realised that they were on until I parked up at the beach.... wondered why other cars were braking and pulling over all the time, it was really irritating.

Once I realised I was relieved that I didn't get myself arrested.

Childish fun though. I couldn't get an answer from any previous owners as to why they are on there.

daviesbike 1st April 2012 07:27 AM

i would have given you 500 quid for the full interior but my D2 has gone now, i was looking for the half leather alcantara for ages in black and i could not find it any ware +++

good luck with everything

Oh Amar would that camara work with the W12 ?

Make sure it will fit first, i bought one and though the dimensions are good externally , the bit which goes inside wouldnt fit , take your light cover of - and if you have a full rectangle it will fit, if it slopes away it wont

PsYcHe 1st April 2012 10:34 AM

Might not fit guy, and you'd need to add the AV input.

Also, it would need to be manually selected in the Media input to see it unless you can spoof the system somehow.

SyncroS8 2nd April 2012 09:31 AM

If you end up breaking it, I would be interested in the LPG system.

Thanks and good luck.

Hi, thanks. I don't have the skills or space to break the car so it has to go as one lump.

Cheers P

The final stab in the back is that the S8 broke down this morning with a suspected fuel pump failure.

Anyone still interested and can fix/trailer away please make contact with your final offer by Wednesday otherwise its going to the breakers yard.

My best but unconfirmed offer received to date is £1000.

Car as was, but with an additional £100 worth of fuel, a valet, and a broken fuel pump (suspected)... doesn't start anyway.

Regards

Dezzy 2nd April 2012 06:00 PM

Reassuring to see that the guy telling you what’s wrong with the car can get the model right :D

Oh yeah, I hadn't noticed that!

Paul 3rd April 2012 03:26 PM

The car was sold yesterday :-)

Thank you all for your interest in this post and your offers.

s2_bo 10th April 2012 02:25 PM

fuel pump

Paul, just a thought.
You could try cold starting on LPG.
(not all systems support this but its worth a try and would assure its the pump if it starts)

Just turn on the ignition then hold down the button on the LPG switch and start the car. That should force start it on gas.
I have done this a few times on mine when i ran out of fuel. (i live out in the sticks in france)

Good luck with the sale.

s2_bo 10th April 2012 02:25 PM

Ohh, i didnt see that last post of yours..

:(

IT 10th April 2012 02:33 PM

Good post though - We did try starting it on LPG, and she almost fired, but given that it wasnt running on all cylinders anyway, it just wouldnt quite catch and fire up.

BRC only give you 5 'start on LPG' goes before it needs resetting by an installer, and we used all them up ;)

So, popped in a new fuel pump, cranked her up and drove her home...... +++
