Anyone visiting the Owners Meet receive an NIP

Anyone else unlucky enough to recieve an NIP (Speeding Ticket) in the post following this weekends meet? :(

Apparently I was doing 35mph in a 30 zone. No excuse but I remember seeing the speed camera van parked down a side road in the distance and looking at my speedo and sat nav which both said I was doing 30.

Ask to see the evidence of calibration. Seriously, if you have reason to doubt this, write and explain just what you said in the post above and ask to see the calibration records. There are legal requirements to calibrate these things at given intervals - a process that is not often adhered to, especially when money is tight.

Oh dear. My brother just got one today too, 37 apparently, but he also thinks he wasnt going that fast. He remembers the van parked just by the railway crossing, he even mentioned it on the day, but he also thought he was doing about 30 so there was nothing to worry about.

Sheeeeeeeeeeet, not had one, yet... I tend to stick to 30 MPH limits but sounds like the system calibration could be messed up. Can't work out where this would have been though as don't know the area.

It was on the main road from Yam just prior to the railway crossing.

Wow, not a great end to a fun day. With two guys who are certain they were doing 30 mph, it would definitely be a good idea to question the accuracy of the equipment they monitor speed with.

Good luck guys!

I saw the van - think I was doing about 27mph at the time as I was behind someone (we were being flashed by oncoming traffic to warn us). Hopefully there won't be a letter waiting for me when I get home later!

It might be a help to look at this guidance (although for Kent Police) at:

http://www.kent.police.uk/about_us/policies/p/p04.html

It does state some interesting stuff under which such NIP might be challenged,. e.g. "The site should also be checked with regard to the correct signage, lighting being that which is required for the ‘limit’."

Unfortunately, challenging as opposed to accepting the fixed fine/points, can lead to increased penalties - which amounts to one of the most undemocratic impositions under law. its sort of double or quits.

I really do question whether its better keeping your eye on the road, cars in front, and kids crossing the road .. or watching your speedo. I find (being a fairly new S8 driver) that its so quiet I dont get the noise feedback which often give you a sense of your speed - so you tend to watch the clock. Sorry about your poor end to a good day - hope you get away with it.

I assume Cleveland Police will offer a speed awareness course rather than points on my licence which has been clean for over 30 years.

I will wait and see what happens next.

sundayrider 26th April 2012 05:23 PM

Interesting that Kent Police don't take action until you are doing 36 mph and then it is the offer of a speed awareness course.

I doubt it. You weren't going fast enough over the speed limit.

A guy who works here in Aberdeen got caught in Leeds. He was offered an 'Awareness' course so grabbed that to avoid the Points.

He was too stupid to realise he's have to go back to Leeds to do it thereby missing 2 dayrates, hotel, fuel etc., etc. :tuttut:

We still rib him about that one......

12.5. When an alleged offence meets the speed awareness criteria and the officer is considering this method of disposal, the driver should be advised that attendance would be voluntary as an alternative to prosecution. They will however, be required to pay for the course, the cost of which will vary according to where they choose to take the course. They can take the course at any location within the England and Wales in force areas that offer a nationally accredited course. If they fail to complete the course they will then be proceeded with by the issue of a conditional offer of a fixed penalty and court action if necessary.

It was you I were following in A6 wasn't it? That would mean I have a good chance of getting ticket as well, my postman just might be slower delivering bad news. I did not see any vans in the distance, I saw one parked next to the road and also looked at speedo and satnav. Speedo was saying 30, satnav 28.

Speed awareness course offered and booked.
