Ghost in the machine?

I have recently started to see a number of symptoms that may or may not (I hope) indicate a developing electrical problem.

First sign was that the stereo started switching itself on while I was driving. No hands anywhere near a button to do so - radio switches on. Not a big deal - by itself.

Then, yesterday, I was picking up a colleague to go to work and noticed that the seat-heating had switched itself on. At the same time, the ventilated seat function, had stopped working. For many, this would not be a big problem but it's only may and already 43 degrees here, so I'd rather get it fixed before summer!

I tried cycling the seat heaters on and off, re-selecting the ventilation and so on but to no avail. Luckily, I stopped for fuel shortly afterwards and the stop-start of the systems seems to have cleared the problem.

Haven't had a chance to vag-com it yet to see if there are any codes but am worried that it may be water ingress into connectors (although it hasn't properly rained here for over a year) or similar.

Anyone seen this before?

p.s. Friend has now nicknamed the car "Christine"!

I'm kind of flummoxed how my parking brake pads think they've done more than 1,000,000 Kms (!) but figure that the stuck button in the control head and the dead lumbar support switch are the important parts. Don't get the component protection for the stereo though, what would that ) be caused by and b) limit in the system?

The telephone errors are caused by my replacement of the module with a mobridge unit.

Anyone got a noobs guide as to how to do the adaptation fot the control head? that's been needing done for a while.

Stuarta 5th May 2012 01:09 PM

Update - have checked all 4 lumbar support adjustments - all of them working normally!

MMI return button is somewhat sticky - suspect something may have been spilled on it - will need to figure out how to dismantle the centre console without breaking anything before going any further.

PsYcHe 5th May 2012 02:00 PM

Clear the codes down and see what comes back.. many codes can be stored for years beyond the initial problem.

MMI sticky buttons are common... I don't allow open drinks containers in the front cup holders usually as there's no water ingress protection on the MMI control panel! (poor design). Just work at it a bit and see if it loosens off.

limoncello 5th May 2012 02:59 PM

incorrect coding on Address 07: Control Head needs to be fixed while your there

limoncello 5th May 2012 04:38 PM

actually seems to be correctly coded

must be the adaptation

theres only one in the rosstech wiki

Adaptation
Channel 012: Telephone Type

0 = No Telephone
1 = Fixed Telephone installed (PR-9ZJ)
2 = Cell Phone Preparation OR Bluetooth Phone installed (PR-9ZG/9ZW)
4 = Telematics installed (PR-9ZS)

limoncello 5th May 2012 04:42 PM

did you just do an MMi update? from what version?

Stuarta 5th May 2012 07:59 PM

Ok, here goes -

All codes were cleared a week ago when I finally finished the job of getting the air suspension working again, so are current.

The only MMI button that seems to be a bit sticky is the return one - been working on it for a bit but am off the next few days, so can do it properly.

Telematics was showing a fault even before I removed the module to replace with the mobridge unit. Question is, when the OEM module is replaced by a third party one, which code is set in the adaptation?

MMI was upgraded recently - to 5570 from 5150. Only disk 3 was used as no factory bluetooth - mobridge unit was "hidden" while update was installed.

The "incorrect adaptation" error on the control head has been present since I bought the car (from the only dealer here) 6 months ago!

Am also wondering now about the battery control module - had an electrical fault a few weeks ago that drained the battery but hasn't recurred - wonder if it got damaged? Charging carried out "by the book".

Any comments on the "Mileage: 1048575 km" shown on address 47 and 53?

limoncello 5th May 2012 08:43 PM

its possible/Probable that the MMi update caused the component protection to kick in,

sort the adaptation Channel 12 out , just change the value to the one that fits best with your setup, i dont know what the mobridge needs or how its installed, maybe start by adding the value 0 in place

not sure if you also need to untick the phone from the gateway

Rather than starting a new thread, I thought I'd digress here.....

Well, I finally finished fixing most of the niggling problems that have been bugging me since I bought my W12 - Air suspension sorted, New brake pads all round, new TPMS batteries and tyres, replaced broken EPB switch, replaced "picked at" hazard switch panel and put in some new floor mats.

Now I can get on with the little things....

While browsing the hidden menu in order to reinstate the TPMS, which had disappeared after the battery ran right down, I noticed that the list of installed equipment in the diagnostic settings submenu (0x0, plus others) showed rather a lot of empty tick boxes. Seeing as my car was ordered by Audi ME as a VIP transport, I assume all the bells and whistles that were available at the time were installed but don't know how to check what's there and what isn't and/or what I can safely enable.

the empty boxes were...

acc
interior lighting extended
aps front
aps rear
reserved
fingerprint (installed but not working)
seat memory rear
mfl
swa
ldw
rvd
neuer fpi
aps
bordcomputer
auxillary heating
charisma
stereo aux
no v threshold car
rc air conditioning

Can anyone decode the above list and/or advise which ones I can safely play with?

Many thanks.

HPsauce 30th May 2012 07:54 AM

I'd guess acc is adaptive cruise control (radar in front grille).

Architex_mA8tey 30th May 2012 05:45 PM

Charisma? wow i didnt know Audi could provide that as an option!!! :D

HPsauce 30th May 2012 06:15 PM

Charisma "may" be something to do with default settings for some options such as Drive Select (suspension default setting?)?
See this thread, if someone can translate......
http://forums.subdriven.com/showthre...VE-SELECT-CARS

Indeed I found this quote on a Rumanian web site: "menu to enable "Charisma" (the code-name for Audi Drive Select)"

Along with lots of other interesting struff that many of you will probably know: http://www.clubaudi.ro/audi-a4-b8-20...i-vcds-b8.html

PsYcHe 30th May 2012 08:57 PM

Drive Select.. That's the bugger.. was goign to post earlier, but couldn't remember what it was.

Has no effect on a D3 if you turn it on.. I know because I did :)

Stuarta 31st May 2012 02:27 AM

Thanks for the replies - going to try switching some bit and pieces on to see what happens........
