Cheap sporty exhaust... and I mean CHEAP!

I've been enjoying driving my S8 around for a while now but I can't hear the engine.

As other people have replaced the rear silencer with straight pipes, I thought I'd have a go myself.

2 x 55mm Stainless lengths with a 45o bend from ebay

Cheap 55mm stainless pipes

I've looked at tailpipes and I would end up spending another £25 on top so I decided to use the stock tailpipe.

Starting point...

Starting cutting...

No turning back now.

Pipes

http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...IMAG0753-1.jpg

They come with a flared end which slips over the stock size exhaust pipes.

First pipe tack welded to the tailpipe and checking on position etc.

http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/v...IMAG0756-1.jpg

Pipes welded up and ready to go on.

I added a hanger on top which sits into the stock mounts and clamped it down.

The result is a nice V8 burble.

It is a little boomy inside at around 1800-2000rpm but otherwise it's not too noisy and sounds lovely :D

The look is stock from outside.

Total cost, £47 plus a couple of hours welding and cutting.

..... and you *still* claim you havnt fallen in love with the old girl and that you're going to break her..... ;)

Fixing the gearbox was a forgivable necessity, and fitting LPG was a vaguely plausible requirement - but - struggling to see how you're going to explain away the need to change the exhaust note for testing purposes :D

Heheh ok I've fallen in love with the car to an extent but it won't stop me from getting what I want from it... THE ENGINE!!!!

I love the sound of a V8 and this has given me that... although it's just about guaranteed to lower the mpg... not because it'll cause any problems with fuelling but because I love the sound tooooo much :D

Just out of curiosity what did you weld the stainless pipes with?

Nollywood 23rd May 2012 06:29 PM

Syncro, a video clip is an absolute MUST! +++

SyncroS8 25th May 2012 09:18 AM

Not sure if that's possible now as the fuel pump has just died.

Bummer! Just as we want an audio/video :D

SonicMarmalade 9th July 2012 08:47 PM

Still no video? Dying to hear this because I've been thinking of doing this to Fatty

SyncroS8 26th July 2012 09:08 PM

Sorry guys,

The fuel pump died shortly after I did the exhaust... Like 3 days later! So no video.

Nollywood has put first dibs on the silencer bypass pipes so once he fits them, you should get a good video then.

Exhaust bypass pipes are now for sale. Nollywood hasn't come back to me so they're available if anyone is interested.

I'll even throw in the sleeves so that you can swap between stock or bypass pipes easily.

V(ery) GUD! Looking forward to hearing that for real. What's the next meet that you're planning to attend, Neil?

R055Y 18th March 2013 06:57 PM

Whats the angle??

I'm looking to do this on my D3 (Box each side single inlet to each) and would like to know if they are still at 45 angle???

Many Thanks...

Rossy

Its a 40MPG V8

That's a lovely V8 sound! +++

How do you find it at a syeady 70/80mph?...I remember Guy getting a little annoyed with his quad system at normal driving speeds...

Oli

stig1983 12th May 2013 04:09 PM

I personally enjoy it, mates love it, random people stop by and ask about the "mod" cause they love the sound but missus wont drive with my anymore - she absolutely hates it lol

SyncroS8 11th June 2013 09:41 PM

I've just caught up with this thread :)

Well done guys. Keep up the good work +++

I've just done another gearbox rebuild but this time on an RS6 which is my new daily driver.

I'll be playing with the exhaust system soon to get a nicer sound.
